hi i've just bought and audi a3 1.6 fsi, absolutely love the car but when i picked up the car noticed a high pitched whirring noise through low speeds but thought nothing of it thought it was just the natural running of the car but after looking through some history it looks like the previous owner has reported this to audi and they've diagnoised as coming from the gearbox but to no rectification. i persume thats when the owner got rid of the vehicle because it'll be out of warranty. the car seems to run fine doesn't miss a gear and is dead smooth in every gear, no clunking or stiff changes, just the noise under low speeds.

Does anyone have any ideas? is it a case of jus low gearbox fluid?

My car is totally different to yours, but the box always whined a bit,and slowly got worse to the point where we stripped it down.....the selector forks are prone to wear,as are the synchros, and it may be that....how many miles?

car has done 56,000 miles

Could be what I've described, but without taking it to bits it's impossible to say.

Is there any warranty from buying it?

yeah there's a 3 month warranty with the garage i bought it, but just thought if it was something small saved me messing around. i work for mercedes and the lads said first thing to try is change the oil and if theres no luck with that then it is to take the box off.

One method is to drain the oil and check for bits of bearing and other debris.

yeah might do that at the weekend, i'm not even sure whether it is the gearbox now, just been out in it and when you dip the clutch it goes away but also goes away when you take your foot of the accelerator.
