I had the chain driven balancer shaft converted to the gear driven system on my 2005 2.0tdi in June this year at a cost of over 3k euro. Im just wondering if the hex drive issue would have been resolved with the replacement gear driven unit?! Im just afraid now that this can round off resulting in the same failure. Please tell me it would have been replaced with the new unit.

The new Audi oilpump/balance shaft assemblies ( I had mine fitted at the end of 2011 ) most definetely comes with a new and slightly modified hex drive.
That said, will it resolve all the issues, only time will tell....................

So if the unit was replaced in june this year it should have it? Is it something that is part of the unit or would it have to be ordered seperately?! I know it mightnt fix the prob long term but it should be good for another 60-80k miles which will prob be longer then i will have the car.

Assuming Audi fitted the replacement unit and not some questionable third party then the oil pump /balance shaft module comes comples with the hex drive fitted. if yours was replaced this year then I would say you can comfortably expect more than 80k before the possibility of this issue arising again.

it was fitted by an indy but the part was ordered from audi. took a few months to get the part from germany as they were on back order but it was fitted in june this year. thats great paul, put my mind at ease! i was freaking out thinking the hex drive would wear and i would be back to the same problems i had before i had to spend €3.3k. cheers!!

My parts were on back order at the end of 2011 for 5-6 weeks ( if my memory is correct ) and my car off the road for all this time.
I think that as you were also waiting for back ordered parts in June of this year, this indicates the magnitude of this Audi design problem.....................

my car broke down in march this year, but the parts had been ordered in february as i was going to replace the unit anyway. they didnt arrive until june though, a close on 5 month back order, ridiculous. as you said it shows the magnitude of audi's design fault!
