The other halves A3 Sport will be needing four new tyres fairly soon. I did want to stick with the better brands but your talking £400 at a minimum for a full set fitted. Are there any respectable choices in the £70-£80 per tyre bracket? Size is 225 45 17.

They are expensive & £400 is about par for that size, but cheapo's will be a false economy if an accident occurs because of them.

Falkens are a good semi-budget tyre. I'd say 80-90% of the performance but 50% of the price of the premium tyres. And whatever way you go, check camskill.com first - they've always been cheapest for me.

My Bridgestone s001's were sub £100 supplied and fitted, you could get ditch finders for sub £70 but you have a choice to get in it and drive it or let your wife drive it with the cheapest of tyres but if you got kids they dont get the choice wether they get to ride in the car. Me personally wouldn't feel safe letting my wife in my car if I fitted the cheapest of tyres fitted. They are the last thing to be in contact with the road so not worth risking it in my opinion.
Go to lovetyres and check out their prices on Goodyear Eagle f1a2s, they're the best I've found. Wouldn't bother skimping a few quid and going with Falkens.
Ok thanks for the replies, deep down I know not to skimp but I've never spent £400 on tyres! I've seen some Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2's for £82 that have 91 at the end of them but the 94 XL version is £91, what is the difference?

I believe it's load rating (Extra Load). High performance or heavier cars use XL tyres due to the cornering pressures exerted on the tyre wall. If you have a lighter lower performance car than you can get away with non XL.
From memory if you need to inflate to over 35PSi as part of your manufacturer specified tyre pressures you should be using XL, especially if car weighs >1000kgs
Just checked and my A3 and they are 91 as standard, so £82 is a pretty good for what I can see is generally considered the best tyre out there.

You could go part worns but obviously long run spend more having to keep replacing them but I can get potenzas 18" for 50£ at a local place nothing wrong with them no bulges, fill ins etc.

Cheap tyres?
My wifes A3 came with Accelera Alpha's on it. ****** awful!
Noisy as hell and a rubber compound that just seemed to attract damage. Wear rate wasn't great either. A road test I read was also very damning. While performance in the dry was actually very good (noise aside), in the wet they came way down the list (somewhere near the bottom).
In addition a relative recently thought he'd save a few quid by sticking Far Eastern tyres on his Golf. He hates them! His main complaint is noise.
You get what you pay for. I'd only consider budget tyres if I was about to sell the car or only pootled around the town at 30mph and did a low amount of miles per year. And even then I'd want to read up on the road tests in the magazines.

Well it does to me, especially when all 4 need doing at the same time. You're obviously better off than me!
My Eagle F1 Assy 2's (94Y) cost £116 per corner fitted so that's a ****** good price if it's all inclusive !
Brilliant tyres though - thoroughly recommended.

Been quoted £122 each for Goodyear Excellence, didn't think that was bad but may have a look round for something better
Have got 2 cheap tyres on the front atm, that where already there when I bought it, they have lasted just over a year and are REALLY terrible in the wet/damp and thats with seriously careful driving too
I did like the Toyo Proxes 4 I put on my previous car, 2 months before I sold it!
It is worth the extra few pounds, they are the only 4 parts that (should) keep you on the road...

That's supply only mate, but there's a part worn place near me that would fit and balance all four for £20.
I had Toyo T1-R's on my old C2 VTS and the dry weather grip was immense, but boy did they wear quick!

I guess I'm just surprised you own an Audi that on the face of it is relatively new (?) but think £100 for a tyre is a lot... It seems pretty cheap to me, in general over the years tyre usually cost me about £125 a corner.
Have you looked at Event Tyres online? They supply and fit for pretty good prices?
I was £440 all in for 4x 225/35 R19s... so £100 a corner for 17"s seems quite high, though it's Falkesn I've got, not Contis or F! Assyms.

Pirelli P6000 are pretty cheap at £90 per corner.
My favourites are Bridgestone Potanza (good grip and last a longtime so worth the extra, only downside a little noisy) or Dunlop Sport SP01 (great on my Skoda Octavia).
