Feel your pain dude... been there on more than one occasion... in fact took the car to work today as I desperately wanted to see how she drives.. all is good, think I have even sussed the boost control problem I was having and managed to catch a f*cking pothole on the way home... massive bang and now the steering doesn't feel right...

Sorry to bleat on like the rest but this is why I have the Mk2 Golf... cheap as chips to run and if I get frustrated (as you clearly are and I fully appreciate why) I can just park up and walk away from it for a few days...

Its a sad fact that modding to our level will inevitably lead to issues such as this and you have to mitigate against this as best you can..

Don't give up mate, I have been trying to get 400hp from mine for over 3 years lol

<tuffty/>

Cheers for those of you who have given positive comments. And thanks for the virtual b1tch slap Aragorn but I don't agree with some of your post.

This problem has just occurred at the wrong time really, just started a big project at work so they need me around, ive got a plumber, plasterer, and carpenter all coming to do work on the house over the next 5 weeks, and I've just spent out a pretty big amount on the car already this month.

The car needs fixing, end of. I can't do it with the tools and time I currently have so I need to be logical. My options are as follows:

1 - buy v3 mani, all parts to remove head, gaskets, bolts etc. drop the car to a garage that knows what they're doing and just pay the labour.

2- there's a possibility the old Late Night Mechanichs team could get back together for 1 weekend only next weekend to drink beer and smash this out. Tam has all the tools we need and together it'll be a lot faster plus saving on labour costs and petrol to take it somewhere.

Once the car is fixed I really need to make a decision as to whether it's up for a commute of 40+ miles a day (that's if the gf uses it). I will have to either sorn the S3 off the road and buy a cheap runner while we do he house up the. Put the s3 back on the road in a year or 2. Or sell the S3 when it's fixed to fund a sensible old persons car.

I think the main thing that's annoying me is the fact that I can't fix it myself! Feel so ****** useless with my cheap socket set and plastic spanners lol.

Westy, only you know the right choice, but as others have said take your time to decided mate

Sometimes things happen at ****ty times, you thought it was just about finished then bang your at it again, (unfortunately most women wont understand this and probably throw more fuel on the fire)
But to put it into perspective its had its guts howled out on the dyno for a few hours/days last week, and it still is only a potential gasket failure, pain in the ***...yes untimely....yes ..... grief from the mrs....probably....:ermm:

Grab a beer and forget about it a day or 2 ...Im sure the LMN crew will work something out...:icon_thumright:

Option 2 ftw!

Feel your pain on the tools though. Often got half way through a job and found I don't have the correct tools! Only on the Audi though. Jap stuff was a piece of **** lol. Want me to hold fire on rushing the bits over to you until you decide what's going on?

Yeah hold fire mate. I will need all those bits but not as soon as I thought. And I'll probably have to order up head bolts, head gasket, oil, cam belt etc.

If LNM does go ahead you're welcome to join us.

If its next weekend I'll be on the tunnel run from 9pm - 7am so Saturday night would be a no go and Sunday I'll be pretty dead lol. Will see how it goes though and of course if I have the car lol

What tunnel run, sounds interesting.

What tunnel run, sounds interesting.

Jap only :p Miss Banzai annual London tunnel run to raise money for the air ambulance services. Going in a mates R32GTR. Something like 700 cars driving around London making lots of noise until 4am+ it's an epic night. If anyone has any mates with modified jap cars then go with them and do it!!

fred mate,
you were just telling me the other day you want to enjoy your car!
this is merely a perfect time to fit a proper manifold dude!
ok, so you have forked out royally lately to get it how it is, but, a bit of overtime can solve that!
once you have calmed down a bit, drove somebody elses piece of poo for a week, then go into your garage mate, and look at the minger, you WILL want to fix it.
trust me you will!
you have got a fully sorted rocket, built all by yourself that has acquired a slight hiccup because of a missing bracket that is all.
snap out of it fella!
and "do work son"! :icon_thumright:

freddie freddie freddie, my dearest of lovers...

go and run yourself a bath, put in plenty of your favourite bubble bath, maybe some tealight candles, and enjoy a glass of rose wine.
Wash your vagina thoroughly, get the mach 3 out and some 'for sensitive skin' shaving foam, and give your minge a good shave.
you will then feel much better about yourself.
by this time you will be plenty relaxed, and you can dry your vagina right off. slip into your favourite dressing gown and pink fluffy bunny slippers, set up camp in the living room with another glass of wine, and enjoy episode after episode of desperate housewives.

love always

westy i know none of my other posts were fo any help, sorry bout that i just don't know when to be appropriate.

i don't even know you or have even met you but if i lived at all close enough id come round and help!

but if any little helps iv got a new exhaust gasket its off an agu but i guess there the same and if you let me know what size tools you need i can root through the tools in the garage and send you some down your way then you can bend, grind and hammer your own tools out of them.

just got to keep your chin up mate! im pretty sure you are capable to sort this out. look at all the work you have put in to the car so far.

don't be negative about it, it happens to every one at some point with there cars as others have said.

i know where you're coming from man, Like tuffty, I've been there many times, blowing boxes up constantly, the crash that cost me so much, it all seemed pointless to carry on, but you'll get over it.

It's one thing to talk about selling it, whilst you're 50 miles away at work and stressed, but go and open your garage doors and look at it, and ask yourself, can you REALLY sell it? after everything? All those years?

No, I didn't think so!

I suppose having another car when these things happen make things so much less stressful. I would then be able to just leave the S3 in the garage till I have the time and money to fix it. Once it's fixed I will need to do whatever I can to buy a small runner. I will try my best to blag a car out of work but I don't think it'll happen.

Mate, having just read all of this - firstly - bummer. I am truly gutted to hear this.

Secondly, man the **** up (In a nice way).

I know exactly how you feel bud, I had exactly this with that 034 pile of dog poo. 1000 miles it managed, got some good numbers, and then crackola. That was frankly soul destroying. Not to mention the money it cost to buy, which I never saw back. But there we go, these things happen.

Yes, it is a pain in the ****. Yes I did feel like you at the time. BUT you have got to just get your chin up and realise that there are worse things. You've spent a lot of time getting your stock K04 S3 to max point and you achieved what you wanted to achieve.

Get a V3 manifold on order, accept that life is sometimes a *****, and get the V3 fitted.

You WILL regret selling up now after so much work.

Nice speech Mr Welly, if a little ironic coming from someone who has put a lot more work into their S3 and has it up for sale.. Although that's down to boredom rather then being a bit menstrual.

Fred, just get Prawn to post his manifold fitting spanners to you and get it sorted. Or buy some cheap ones, heat them up and bend them yourself

All systems are go!

Bought a V3 mani, all the head kit and going to get this all fitted next Saturday. Once my wallet has recovered I think I need to sort out another car and also a decent collection of tools.

you coming to ADI in the corsa?

No mate ADI is off for me. It made more sense to not waste the money on the fuel to get there and back as I wont be on track or have my car. Bit of a shame as I've still not done ADI but maybe 3rd time lucky. Concentrating solely on my track day at Bedford Autodrome on 3rd Movember now

thats fair enough. a shame though.
so are you certain of whats wrong with the car now? is the manifold even cracked?

Mani does have the tiniest hairline crack on the collector which is a common accurance when fitted without a turbo support bracket. This however isn't my issue. One of the gaskets, appears to be mani to turbo, has blown, probably to do with the poor fixings we used when we built the engine at easter. As the head has to come out to successfully get at the fixings I've decided to buy a V3 and hope this all lasts a bit longer then 6 months like it has on the V1.

Glad to see you're cracking on with it dude, great work.

If you want a good fun and cheap car to get about in whilst you are fixing the S3 why don't you get a Mk2 Golf GTI or something like that. Buy it, run it, tart it up when you're done and sell it for a profit to put back into the S3.

That's what I would do anyway.

Last time I looked into having a cheap runner it was the insurance that was a pain. I was looking at £500 A4 TDIs but the insurance on one was more then the car as I was using all my NCB on the S3. As the S3 was so heavily modded it meant that a multi car policy was out the window too. Running those 2 cars together actually worked out costing more then just the S3, and that was hoping that the TDI didn't need too much work.

Ideally I need to tie a cheap runner into a multi car policy with my GFs then have a limited milage policy on the S3. This is something I now need to really look into but may have to wait till the GFs insurance is due.

I will be looking for VAG tdi of some sort as I have VCDS and contacts in the VW parts dept so it makes sense to get a Skoda, Seat, VW, or Audi

Westy if you can get yourself over to Bedford Saturday morning i'm happy to give you a lift to ADI.
