As titled. A few easy steps to destroying a turbo.

1. Take a home built turbo in which 24psi+ is 'a bit on the high side'
2. Stick it on a 1.8t
3. See that it runs 18psi nicely and spools quickly
4. get the map tweaked and then wind actuator out so it runs 24psi in higher gears
5. decide to 'be a champ' give the actuator about 7-8 more turns
6. take it out for a test drive
7. see boost gauge shoot round to 30psi and listen for a bang.
8. See lots and lots of smoke
9. coast back making sure to turn off engine before/as engine oil pressure light comes on.

End result:

I once saw about 32psi from my hybrid when the actuator pipe came off, my god it didn't half fly!

How much of that comp wheel has the poor engine eaten I wonder?

Went out about 2 hours later and their was no oil on the roads Dave, it was wet so you would have seen it. Only got about .3 of a mile before it had used it all though.

It is my 1/2 my turbo, but not the k04..

I think it went past 30psi, but as I was in the passenger seat I'll say 30 so it's not exaggerated..

Well.... We say 30psi as that's all the gauge goes to and it flew past that at an awesome pace.


Think it's possible the first k03s to make 300ft lb+ haha.

Engines still on 4 cylinders so all good!

did you honestly think this was a wise idea ?? knowing it would spill oil all over the place ? time and a place for this and it isn't on the public highway

did you call the higway agency to come and clean it up ?

it may seem over the top, but oil on the road can easily end a life
 
Just out of intrest... Why have the car mapped then start messing with fairly big things like boost preasure?

Having come from a family full of bikers and wanting one myself once I am older and a bit more responsible/well off we went out and checked that the road was o.k. Their was no sign of any oil slick and not a lot of oil was dripping from the car as the exhaust was quite hot.

It wasn't the intention to blow the turbo up, it came about and rather then cry and moan I thought I would post a jovial thread about it...

I am well aware of the dangers that having 2 contact patches instead of 4 brings and had it been necessary to do so would have informed the highways agency. They were probably out fixing the less dangerous pot holes (bikes loves them)
 
The oil was burnt through the hot side, came out as smoke not liquid. The oil on the turbo came out when the boost pipe and tip was removed. The road has no oil on it, we inspected it very carefully, floor was wet so residue would be very obvious.

The car was mapped with an old map from my car when it was running stage 2, it was then asked to be amped up all round, not just boost.. The thing that blew it up was exuberance on the actuator.

Both can cause bikers to fall off, albeit oil will have a lot less warning..

You could see the lack of an oil trail when the engine was on. We have a pic about 15mins later where the car started to drip, but it was off the road by then and away from bikers..
 
oil sticks and can cause a biker to come off at the next braking point, turn etc - a pot hole wont chase you down the road lol

No way! the turbo needs a new head gasket then! and does it need a new alloy wheel or are you going to put a steely on it! I my self would of pulled over any put my space saver on to boost me home...

Sadly it was only a matter of time with these highly strung small turbos.

The oil would have burnt out the exhaust so it won't have left a slick, so we can stop worrying about that. The oil you see here is from the Tip removal.

Been there, done that.

oil / diesel / mud / gravel - it's all the same on a corner, roundabout or a perfectly straight section of road. With a large dollop of luck you'll stay on the bike on a perfectly straight bit of road as long as you have no need adjust speed or course.

Makes my balls shrink just thinking about it.
 
good job you dont live round my way, you would be off every couple of minutes.
pot holes, mud, stones, you name we got it.
 
I think more oil is left on the roads by people driving around in badly maintained cars rather than Reesy's little misadventure. Imagine if a following biker had got caught up in the smoke screen though ;-)

Would be ok - just stand on the handle bars. Maybe pop a wheelie at the same time ;)
 
I cracked 290lbft from a ko3S with 24psi Ben, so pretty sure this would have gone way past that!

Poor little Leon, what's next for it? have you fixed that horrid quarter panel yet?

Quarter panel will be being fixed pretty soon.

The Leon is getting a K04 at sensible power (250 - 260ish), some coilies, still got to take the carpet out and possibly the A/C.

Then with its 3 ditchfinders and 1 uniroyal rainsport, it's pretty much ready for tracking :racer:

Might try and find some better tyres for it first.
 
some folks *know* what will happen when you feck about with actuators, and some *must* do it to see for themselves
 
I'm pretty sure Ben knows what happens when you mess about with an actuator, and if he didn't he does now..

Good job the turbo was built on a desk in the corner of the workshop, and the car cost less then a set of rods for a 1.8T.

speaking of rods... wonder what shape they are now S or C with uber torque moment..

If you take out the balanced bit then that's exactly what the turbo was...

Was being the operative word.

Saying that, I don't think it would have mattered if it was a brand new from the factory K03s, it probably would have exploded regardless.

Surprisingly still on 4 cylinders and sounding ok!

I put the turbo together from my box of faulty/ broken housings and parts as an experiment. To be fair to this experiment @18psi it ran great. Was intrigued to find the breaking point, like any man with the means would of done haha.

Good job I've got a complete ko4 engine kicking around. The joys of owning your own garage! ;)
 
Turbo came off tonight and the actuator was wound so tight that it wasn't opening on the k03s!
