Guys i think ive got a duff wheel bearing..... getting a knocking noise from the front wheels not sure which one as my hearing is ****.

Knocking increases with speed and decreases under breaking.

Started happening on the way to the ring and has continued since i got back obviously getting worse.

Is this easy to replace and if so does anyone have a guide? could this be something else more concerning?

Only other thing i have had done to the car recently was a drivers side drive shaft seal.

any ideas ?

Worn wheel bearings don't usually knock, it's more like a drone sound.

Id suspect ARB bushes, top mounts, wishbone bushes etc etc first.

Is it an A3 or an S3?

If it's an A3 it's probably a CV joint. Is it on the drivers side?

Well it appears it is a wheel bearing on the passenger side and the knocking is actually more like a drone that gets louder at speed.... Got the wife to check and the garage to confirm. Now i'd like to change this myself so any idea's guys

Not tooo hard to be fair. A bang tidy tip, put the bearing in the freezer the day before and don't take it out until you're about to put it in. It'll pop in easier that way.

Wheel off, get the woman to step on the brakes and undo the hub nut (reverse thread), caliper off and zip tie it to the spring, disc off, undo the ARB drop links, undo the track rod end, undo the lower ball joint (remembering to use a piece of chalk to mark the existing location of the bolts if you do it the backwards way), undo the pinch bolt for the hub and pull it out, hammer in a VAG hub spreader tool (VW tool 3424) and if you're really lucky you'll be able to wiggle and gently hammer the hub free from the strut.

Remove the circlip and press the bearing out with a press or make something up in a vice.

Refitment is the reverse of removal and all that jazz.

Have fun and try not to scrape your knuckles too much.

Bearings require a press to remove and fit... you will need to press the hub out first then the bearing.... when refitting you will need to press the bearing in first... when pressing in the hub make sure you support the centre of the bearing... I normally set the press up so you are pushing the centre of the bearing (CV side) onto the hub... if you don't support the centre of the bearing in some way then you will end up pushing the centre out destroying the bearing...

Anyone know which bearing i need

WHEEL BEARING KIT, FRONT

or

WHEEL BEARING KIT, FRONT

???

From memory of the last time I bought bearings from SF they do a 'budget' bearing and an OEM spec one... they recommended the OEM spec one to me over the cheaper one mostly due to the spec of my car...

For the sake of a fiver I would get the better one...
