Hi Guy's,

I have been a Subaru owner now for 12 years and have gone through 4 different models in that time with various modifications along the way. I have just put a deposit down on a A4 Avant S-line 2.0t Quattro to use as more of a family car with the plan to tuck the scoob away for fun/sunny days.

The thing is, I'm not used to the miles that Audi's tend to rack up.
The car in question has 89,000 miles on a 54 plate. 2 Owners the first getting regular Audi 'Long Life' services, the 2nd owner (last 2 years) shows no sign of service (no stamp). it may well of had an oil/filter change but no official record.
the cambelt has been done and the dealer has agreed to put an audi service on it.

So 2 Questions :

1. What kind of service can I expect to be done i.e what will they check and replace

2. Convince me that 89,000miles is OK, as most of my previous cars have ranged from 15,000 to 60,000 before moving on. Trying to find an A4 B7 sub 80,000 seems like a very rare thing.

Many Thanks

.

Mine has 131k on it and runs fine and doesn't use any oil, my last golf had 220k on it when I sold it and is still going strong.

iv had them upto 200k
and less that 10k
and they all drove as good as each other
the service you will prob get is oil filter top ups and air filter.

I've recently bought my b7 sline 1.9TDi for £8100 with 83k on the clock my next service is at 103k to me seems quite a distance but audi's live for ages so if the 2nd owner didn't do that many miles to reach the service interval then why spend the money I guess. As for the service you may get they will go for the cheapest one that's not going to cost them much I bet

But if Audi are stamping the book according to the schedule then shouldn't the service be as per schedule ?
I have spoken to the dealer since posting the above and apparently the dealer will replace anything required that hasn't already been recorded and may even do a coil pack if thought required.

I have been driving Audi for over 20 years and the B7 is a DOG.

Audi 80's 2.0 petrols to near 200k
Audi B5 1.6 to near 150k
Audi B7 2.0 tdi oil pump/balance shaft failed at 68k ................................................

all depends on how there looked after
the B7 derv BLB iv just sold was on 154k and drove faultless

out of all the BLB tdi's sold the ones that pop arnt really that many
it is a bad design
but like everything we never hear about the ones that dont fail
only the ones that do.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm wonder if you would be saying that with a £2k bill left to pay to sort out Audis defective design?

id hate the bill
but then iv had the belts snap
cam snap
pick up pipe etc etc
luck of the draw iv had over 60 audis and still run 7 in the family
and 3 bad rebuilds

Equally there are many BLB owners who aren't on here but have suffered the problems. The BLB is definitely a timebomb design and will fail.

Well the Audi dealer gave it an 'inspection' servce and changed the oil and filters, then a whole host of checks which are really worth all that money (NOT). But hey they charged the guy I was buying it from £350 not me.
Shame they didn't give it a good test drive (spent too much time looking at pointless service items I expect) or they would of felt the miss-fire. Noworries though, I'll soon have it sorted and it gives me a chance to get to know what's what, as normally do all things myself.

Bonus No. 1 : They fitted a full set of coil packs under warranty.
Bonus No. 2 : I found a receipt in the cars history file for an independant service, they just hadn't stamped the book.

Scott, you would do well to take in everything that everyone has to say on here, but also remember that the majority of stories heard on here will be because of one failure or another and others asking for advice to rectify.

Your less likely to here about the non failures (as above).... so for my twopennith worth......

I have been driving Audi's since 1987 (1st was Audi Quattro mmmmm), in that time I have owned, petrol, diesel, quattro & non, various engine sizes, left & right hand drive. Most with a full service history, but definately some with a sketchy past lol. Service is always the key to keeping the motor running well.

I have put a few on the track (including the 'Ring), so some have been abused :racer:lol.

Also during all that time, my wife has owned 3 BMW's (grrr), 2 Mitsubishi's, 2 Mercs and the last 3 have been Audi's. (All of which I have driven).

All cars can develop issues big & small no matter the manufacturer, especially now in the prestige market fight to get the latest innovation into the vehicle first..... this in some cases will be at the expense of adequate testing & cost.

All that gibberish said.........I am still driving an "Audi"

On the subject of engine noise, does the Audi 2.0 TFSi have a kinda diesel under-tone sound. It doesn't sound too different to our 1.6 petrol Seat Altea if I'm totally honest. At idle and cruise it's very quite, but when you start pushing the rev's it starts to sound more harsh then I would expect from a quality car.
Maybe when the new diverter valve goes on it will sound better as it may not have to work quite so hard.

I was expecting it to be more refined, but difficult to know what to expect as have been driving a flat four with more exhaust noise then engine noise for the last 12 years.

Editted as just read this : 2.0 T FSI Quattro - engine noise

yes they sound like a derv
something to do with the direct petrol injection or something like that.

+1 there Yep....ye old "diesel chatter" on start up is characteristic of the TFSI engines...does settle down once warmed up though.

The Diverter valve change won't change the sound of the TFSI engine but if it's gubbed you will notice perkier gearchanges and some more oomphhhh once you change it over.....the best 60quid tune up I have spent anyway!

Cheers

I find that quite dissapointing as this is supposed to be my little piece of luxury/build quality. Is there any way of improving the sound deadening ??

The Scooby in the garage is the one that's supposed to make all the shouty noises.

The engine chatter shouldn't be that loud that it's a major issue after it's warmed up imho.....compared to the scooby anyway, it should be a bit thrashy but not that bad!.....I have driven diesels for over a decade and mine is far quieter than any of those I have owned.

When I day sounds like a diesel i really mean it has a diesel undertone rather then the full on diesel volume. It's more like (particularly noticable in the 2,500 - 3,500rpm range) a diesel but at 1/2 - 2/3rd's voume. At idle it's fairly normal/petrol like.

Maybe a K&N filter and a few choice holes in the airbox will balance out the noise ;)

The more I read the more I think it is a 'Feature' of the TFsi and the high pressure diesel type specification injectors. Not only in Audi but all VAG. I have even found some posts dating back to when the cars would of been nearly new.

However if it sounds like a diesel when idling then it may be the cam chain/tensioner (I think which links to the inlet cam IIRC). Or if you rev it you may get a rattle as the chain tension slaps.

Is the 1.8T a TFSI unit or is it a completley different setup ?
Which is considered the best/strongest and most refined engine in the B7 range (Petrol or diesel) ?

Here's a piccie of it anyway......

It will be getting dechromes and RS4 Alloy's at some point

Lovely car....leather too....me jealous....am no expert, but I undertsood that the 1.8t early engines have suffered from engine "sludge issues" in the past.....as you know the 2.0t engine is cam belt driven not chain...do you mean the chain at the back of the engine , making the noise?....think there is suppose to be one at the **** end of the engine!
I had a strange pinking type sound from mine during the summer but am putting it down to using 95....since moving to 98 it's been grand!
