Newbie - Meguiars Deep Crystal

Hi guys,

I am a newbie when it comes to car care so taking some advice to get started from a 'pro', I ordered some of Meguiar's Deep Crystal (3 part system). For some people not familiar with this kit, there are three parts:

1. Paint cleaner
2. Polish
3. Carnauba wax

All three are liquid based products.

So I follow the instructions on the pack etc etc etc and get a pretty good result. However, the results are fading pretty quick (from a glass-like touch it is now a little rougher) but what should I do to keep the results? Should I go back to stage 1 each and everytime I do this process, or start from stage 2? Or should I incroporate a clay bar somewhere in there (personally I dont think I need one as the surface feels smooth as silk after stage 1).

I am interested in the likes of iron x to remove contaminants also.

Some help would be great!

Its quite likely due to the Carnauba Wax as it is a liquid product the durability will not last too long which is why the paintwork is starting to pick up contamination again.

It may also be down to where you park the car...if its under trees then the tree sap will fall on the paintwork, if your near an industrial area then it will be iron fall out.

How often do you wash your car and can you add a coat of protection?
 
Hi Juicy, car is never parked under trees, always garaged at night. But it will be natural I guess to pick up contaminants. Car is usually washed once per week with zip wax shampoo and lambs wool mitt. No additional protection.

How often should this three part system be used?
 
Just a quick note on the megs 3 step, I got rid of my stuff as it wasn't lasting, IMO your better off with something more durable especially with winter approaching

2 coats of collinite 476 lasted me the whole winter last year :)

You've answered your own question there really if you don't put any additional protection on then it isnt going to last very long...the main area that you need to look at is getting something better to protect the hard work you put in by claying and polishing.

You could go for the Collinite 476 as its an excellent product for winter 2 coats and it will last you 6 months. It can be a little tricky to apply as the curing time is just 10 minutes, therefore you need to do a couple of panels at a time and then buff off. Don't do the whole car then come back to buff off as it will be like concrete!

Or another nice easy wax to use would be Dodo Juice Blue Velvet which is a hard wax and will last 3-4 months with 2 coats. This is also available in a 30ml pot which will give you between 5-6 coats.
 
Thanks Juicy - I guess my original question was wether I applied steps 1,2 & 3 after washing or just steps 2 & 3 or just step 3?

And of course how often. But these two products look like they are a long laster, especially the detergent proof Collinite.
 
I have Dodo Blue Velvet Pro panel pot which I got from Jen. It is excellent.

If you found Blue Velvet difficult then I'll be honest you could have even bigger issues with Colly as its synthetic based rather than organic so cures very quickly and if left to long its rock hard.

The reason you may of struggled with Blue Velvet is perhaps due to application, try putting on a nice thin layer. TBH though you should be able to get through winter with BV as two coats should last between 3-4 months as long as the car has been fully prepared and decontaminated before hand.

A great alternative and very easy to use is Chemical Guys Jetseal 109 - a sealant and liquid so easy on leave for 20 minutes, buff off, leave 20 minutes, another coat leave for 20 minutes and then buff off. A couple of coats and this will last 6 months
 
Thanks Jen. The problem I had with blue velvet was that I couldn't see where it was going on, I have a lava grey pearl metallic and as the blue velvet was going on transparent I couldn't see it. I was also struggling to get my thick fudgy fingers in the panel pot :laugh:
What about Colly liquid insulator?
 
If you can apply under lights it does help, even though you look like an idot moving your head backwards and forwards trying to see where you have been. With the panel pots you are better off using the dodo juice applicators such as the Supernatural one or Basics of Bling as the end it tapered to fit the small pots.

The liquid insulator wax again is synthetic so really along the same lines as the 476
 
I had the same problem with the megs stuff,looked nice for about a week then seemed to fade.
Following the tip on here,I bought some Collinite 476,not as expensive as i thought it would be,and am amazed at the results!
