Just like to say Hi as i have just signed up and am new to this :)

So i bought myself and Audi S4 B5 on friday night. I bought the car knowing there was a problem with it. It did say the car needed a clutch so i didnt bother testing it i just put it straight onto the back of the truck and took it home.
Had a check over it yesterday to find i can not get into 1st or second gear weather or not the car is running. It went straight into 3rd no problem at all and drive fine into 4th, 5th, 6th and reverse with no sign of slipping from the clutch.
Just wondering if anyone has any idea what it could be? i am hoping its just a cable or something and not the gear box :/

I do have a few plans for this but will update once i decide on what i am going to do ;)

1/2 syncro are a common problem on the 01E box !! New genuine ones are stronger so get one from stealers or you will only be doing it again !!

Whats involved in changing the synchros? Just wondering if its worthwhile me doing whilst ive got the engine and box out

To the OP It's common with the S4 01E boxes, I think i saw this one on Egay, was 1600 iirc. So at that price a used box for a few hundred quid still makes it a bargain tbh.

Lee, not sure, I am pretty sure it's something best left to specialists

Hmmm, mine is OK. Its just quick shift between 1st and 2nd that can be a bit hit and miss

Its a progressive issue.

The synchros on 2nd get weak causing missed shifts. The grinding that results from the missed shift damages the shift collar.

If you never grind the gears, and just live with having to take 2nd gear easy, then it'll go on for a while like that.

It only takes one particularly hard grind and you end up with a box like the OP's

The fix involves new synchros and a new shift collar, its about £500 in parts, plus labour for a transmission specialist to strip the box and fix it.

Yes it was the one on ebay. Got it cheap so not fussed about paying to fix it really. There is another gearbox on ebay at the minute i might try get hold off but failing that i will repair this one.
Is it an engine out job or can it be dropped out with the engine still in

Its awkward but it will come out without the engine

I have managed to source a gearbox for now and will rebuild mine over time. Noticed you can get a longer 6th gear for these as well what will give you a higher top end what would be ideal for the ring trip next year B)

The car needs a few bits and bobs to get it mint again but will have to post up photos once i get the car back from the garage so people can tell me whats what.

Thanks for all your help so far
