Hi, I would just like to introduce myself, my name is Steve and Iam currently looking to buy a 1.9 TDi B5

After a bit of research I have decided that Iam going to go for the 1.9 TDi rather than the V6, I would love the growl and the silky smoothness of a V6 but have heard that the 1.9s are a good bet for mods etc, any advice on buying one of these would be great, ie things to look out for, what to avoid etc.

From what I hear, the 1.9 is a bombproof lump, I had my doubts on a 1.9 in a heavyish car like the A4, but they seem to be adequate???

Iam going for the B5, purely as I love the styling of the earlier car, also heard the 2.0 TDis are not as strong, what sort of power increases could I expect to see on the 110 BHP engine and whats the best or first steps to make, Iam a mechanic by trade and have modded plenty of stuff in the past, mainly T5 Volvos, but I fancy a change and have been impressed by these 1.9 TDis for there economy and power, as I say, any advice on these would be great as Iam not very familiar with these cars, all the best Steve :)

PS: Great forum BTW

Welcome!!

Well you have started with the best block, i have a A3 8L 110 tdi and already upto 140bhp without doing alot at all.

There is plenty of plug and play chips out there if that's the way you want to go, other than that i would speak to either Vagorld, Cobra or if you want to go all out check out Darkside Developments, as they do some crazy stuff to TDI's.

The first few things would be EGR delete kit, PD inlet manifold and 216 nozzles, that will give you a decent increase in bhp, torque but will still give you 40-50mpg.

Hope you enjoy ya oil burner, liek the rest of us oil burners on here you will love it

Thanks for the rapid reply, I have had many cars over the years, some pretty tasty stuff, quick Alfas, BMWs, (had an M5 not long back), but mainly been into me Volvos, but I have been swayed towards Diesel power over the last few years, I think I just fancied a change from modding quick petrol turbo motors or big engined petrol stuff, I have always had a diesel motor for just running about in, mainly French stuff, 406s, Xantias etc, but never had an Audi, I have always liked the A4, especially the B5 platform jobbies, and after reading some stuff on here and on other places I really do fancy a nice A4 with the 1.9 lump.

The last Volvo I had was a V70 TDi 2.5 with the VAG 5 pot in and I loved it, great economy and plenty of power, thats what has got me interested, plus the fact on how economical these engines seem to be, and they seem highly regarded in the VAG world.

I will keep you updated on my project once I get one and look forward to contributing to this great forum, all the best Steve :)

Nice 1 Steve.

Shame about all the french cars, great engines horrible build quality.

Yeh them V70 tdi's do go well, nice car to, but ya cant go wrong with a bit of German quality, my next move will be the A4 i think, not like iam going to get rid of me a3 anytime soon, lol.

You find plenty of people on here willing to help you out with any issues / enquirers you may have, ya cant go wrong with this lot, very good bunch.

Look forward to seeing some pics once you purchase your B5, keep us updated with your mods aswel, always nice to see what other people are doing.

Cheers

Adam

Yeah I will keep you lot updated Adam, it was the V70 I had (like a facelifted 850) it had about 250k on it and still pulled like a train!

As for the French froggy motors, again, engines were great but the cars were made out of tin foil lol, I used to be a massive German fan, had untold BMWs and Mercs (Iam currently off work at the moment but I was a self employed end of life vehicle specialist, other words a scrap trader :) but messed about with a lot of buying and selling a few years back before the bottom fell out of it with the damn scrappage scheme.

When you are pulling cars apart day in and out you get to see how they are made and the build quality, I have always liked Audis and a few have passed through my hands but never really got involved with them, and I fancy a change, we are going on holiday in about a month, then when I get back I will be knuckling down to find a nice one, I wouldnt mind a Quatrro version but do you think that will sap the power of the 1.9 in a big way?

I have been told to avoid the Autos, and have seen plenty of tuning boxes or remaps for these 1.9 engines, I love the way that a Diesel responds to such remaps compared to a petrol, I have been bitten by the DERV bug ;)

Good lad the Dev bug gets you well, i will never have another petrol again.

I would be tempted by the quattro, but don't know to much about them, one of me mates pulls his face like you have just tried to pull his ears of when you mention 4x4's. But i did fancy the quattro a3 tdi, but couldn't find one for the right money at the time.

Shame about ya job fella, the scrapage scheme did well for some but not for others.

Hahhahah tin foil french cars, ya got that ****** right, i used to work for a ****reon dealer, and couldn't believe how 80% of the car is now plastic, felt really safe having one as a company car, due to been on the used car side, i soon got rid for a 56plate Focus sport.

Yeh defo run from the auto's fella, the only auto i would go for these days would be the new DSG system, as my brother has the 2012 A4 S line with DSG and its as smooth as anything, real nice response.

Look forward to seeing the pics when you get back from ya hols, plenty out there fella, just got to find the right one for you

Hey mate, where are you, I see you in Pie eating land, do you mean Wigan, cause thats where iam mate :)

I will be getting back to work soon hopefully, iam waiting two operations on my legs, iam self employed so its not too bad, when the work is there

Yep sunny old Wigan fella.

Whats with the 2 operations?

LOL, small world eh, I picked up on your words like "Fella" too, Iam from East London originally (Cockney) but a lot of friends call me Fella up here, where abouts in Wigan are you mate?

Iam in Bamfurlong (between Ashton-in-Makerfield and Platt bridge) right on the A58, I need 2 bleedin hip replacements dont I, but they are holding off cause of my age (34), hoping to get them done soon

Yeh small world, i am near orell, yeh the fella thing is a defo wigan thing, i am originally from Congleton in south cheshire and moved here with the misses it soon rubbed off, lol

Ouch 2 hip replacements, that cant be fun, i snapped me femur at the hip last year, would not wish that pain on no one, well i could just dont get me started, lol. Sorry bud but they wont be rushing that anytime soon, me mum has needed a new knee for years and wont do that due to her age, crappy NHS..

Its funny, I have had surgery dates a few times but at the last minute they find something wrong in a blood test or a pre op, I have a fair few underlying problems, had DVTs and Pulmonary Embolisms, Diabetes, all sorts so EVERYTHING has to be just so.

As for the pain, thats another story, I was treated first with strong Codiene, then onto Dihydrocodiene, then Morphine, then Fentanyl, then Diamorphine (Bastid pharmacutical Heroin!) now on some really potent stuff even stronger called Oxycodone and on a MAHOOSIVE dose, but without them meds iam in undescribeable AGONY, I NEED this op.

Just hope I can get it done soon at get back to work, but need a nice A4 to bomb around in now :)

So what is it you do mate? did you say you worked in a Citroen Dealers?

I worked in Garages for years, then went on my own with a few recovery trucks (still have) laid up in my yard just waiting for me to get better :(

Yeh hospitals are ****e for that, i had loads of problems with mine and it took 4 op's to put it right. Wythenshawe hospital for ya !!

I used to race moto x enduro, done it for 10 years till aug last year, lack of concentration and me and a dry stone wall became one, not fun.

Ya dont sound like ya having much fun bud, hope all works out for ya, be better when ya find a nice A4, lol

Crikey, sounds like you and me have a fair bit in common, I too raced Motocross from schoolboy til my early 20s down south, mainly in Cambridge, Chippenham and Elsworth, started off on 80s, then a couple of 125s, then had about 6 250s, then a few 500s, had 2 CR500s and a KX500, but could never use the power on the Cambridge tracks.

I would love another 500, awesome power, saying that, some of the 250s were PDQ!

I was a BIG off road bike fan, also used to buy and sell them, got no chance now the way my hips are, even had a few classic Moto-X bikes, old twin shockers :) had YZ 490 and a really old RM 460 aircooled, that takes me back :)

I used to love 2 strokes, but they seem to have been phased out now and the later stuff is 4 stroke, as I say it was a very long time ago when I was racing, 20-25 years back so a hell of a lot must have changed by now :)

wow thats pretty scary, brothers from another mother, lol.

Nah 2 stroke all the way fella, i did me leg on a KTM200 exc, proper powerful, wanted rip ya arms of in every gear, a bit like the opld 500's just not as scary, lol.

I am defo 2 stroke till i die, 4strokes are just boring, ya could go everywhere in 4th gear and not worry about changing down, thats no fun.

I do a bit of trading in bikes me self, mostly kids stuff these days, sell them all day long and make some decent cash, well most of the time anyway, lol.

Once i am fully fit i will be having a TM125, might not seem much but come factory fitted with all the trick bits straight from the shop, fcking awesome, hahahah

Brother from another mother LOL!

But you seem to be into same sort of things though, Diesels, 2 strokes, off road bikes, I still have a couple of very old vintage 2 strokes, they are actually 70s National Racing Karts with proper competition Villiers National 210 2 strokes with 3 speed G/boxes, they were ruled out in the late 80s when class 1 karts (direct drive) came in, these old beasts were very very quick in their day, many accidents apparently so were banned, but I see that there is now a class for these on a much bigger circuit!

Ive always been a big 2 stroke fan, how about big Turbo diesels ;)V12 Detriot Diesel 525HP - YouTube

Now i want that in an A4 :)

A bit big for a Audi i thinks, hahahaha, a bit mental that is!!

Them karts sound like loads of fun, giz a go, lol

They did a eco diesel motobike, but cant think where i saw it, imagine 2 stroke power but 45mpg, lol

Them Karts have been sat in my dads garage for yonks, but I want to bring them up here in the not too distant future and ressurect the bastids lol, they are mad little things, they have proper little Avon Slicks, big curly expansion chambers, they used to ****** fly, last time i drove one was years back on an industrial estate, had to tow start them, but they used to scream when running, I will try and find an example photo below:

No I cant find one ATM, they are very thin on the ground by the looks of it

Yeah very similar, those look like a modern version, the ones I have dont have all the fairings on but may of in the past?

They are very old, they have proper little DRUM brakes front and back, they are aircooled and have a competiton Amal carburettor with a "Tickler" primer button, you need to pre mix the 2 stroke, as I say there is no starting mechanism like a soppy pull cord or a kickstart, they need to be bumped in 2nd or 3rd as 1st has far too much compression, you can poodle along then floor it and it will kick sideways and smoke the tits off the tyres, right fun, but extremely loud, no mufflers, just an open expansion chamber!

When I get them up I should give you a shout, good to talk to someone with similar interests as me :)

Yeh sounds good to me, get em up norf, lol would love a blast in them, like ya said they are like rocking horse now, just done a few searches and cant find em any where, they are defo life keeper

I will get them up here at some point, I need to have a good sort out, just pretty limited to what I can do at the moment due to my legs, if they dont sort me out soon I will have to get back on the road with my truck and get someone to give me a hand just loading the cars up.

Now that scrappage scheme has gone, the auctions seem to be getting a bit better, when I was ok, I would be down Haydock every Wednesday to pick up a motor, and knock it out the following week, was a good earner a few years back until that scrappage scheme hit.

Also had a few websites running where people would put scrap cars on and I would collect, now that was a REALLY good earner a few years back, I was getting between £350 and £550 per scrap car once I had weighed in Cats, alloys etc, then every Tom, **** and Harry jumped on it, but it seems pretty viable again now.

I just sick of being sat on me backside, I might stage an accident to get my operation done ASAP, I fell a few years back round my garage and they were gonna do my op there and then at Wigan Royal Imfirmary, but I was due to get it done at Wrightington (a much cleaner place) so I put it off, wish I had just got it done now. :(

I just aint got a motor at the moment, just got my trade insurance renewed so its going to waste, thats why iam looking for a DERV A4 :)

Fingers crossed that everything gets up and running for ya fella, yeh would defo rather go Wrightington rather than Wigan, Wigan made a right bo bo when it came to me DVT, never again

***!

You sure you aint a clone of me?

So you have had DVTs too? I have had about 4/5 DVTs and 2 episodes of Pulmonary Embolisms, now that was ****** scary, coughing up clots of blood, couldnt breath and collapsing on stairs, nearly curtains for me!

Iam now on Warfarin for the rest of my life, high dose 16 m a day, everytime I stop the Warfarin I get a DVT,. as for Wigan hospital, I have discharged myself from that sh**hole about 4/5 times, once they put me on the coronary care unit, then when they realised my heart was ok they moved me to a nasty nasty ward called "Highfield" it was the pits compared to the rest of the hospital, I undone the drip in my hand and capped it, walked out with the canula still in, they called the bleedin Police on me cause of the needle still being in, couldnt believe it LOL, something to do with it being illegal, so had to go back and sign myself out and get drip removed.

TBH mate iam falling apart with all my ailments, :)

Have you seen that "Blacksmoke Merc" on YT? That got me into Diesels, watching the power of that animal of a car!

Yeh fella i was bodged by Wythenshaw quiet bad, the operation to fix my femur was meant to take 2/3 hours, 8 and half hrs later i came out, nearly needing a blood transfusion and nearly having a cardiac due to me oxygen level was so low. Then to top it all off it wasn't even fixed, all the metal work in there but not attached, and they left me like for a fecking month before they got me back in and re did it. Then they didn't even give me anything for me DVT, that took me to phone me own GP 3 days after been home as me leg had blown up like a balloon and had a big black line down it (the vain).

I love our great NHS, or is it just us, lol

Nah not seen that vid, will check it out when i have a min

No its not just us mate, the bastid NHS are a freakin joke, 3 things already this week, 1st my mrs was checked for sleep Apnea, they gave her the all clear until a sympathetic doctor rechecked her results and found she was VERY HIGH RISK!, My middle boy Jack trapped his finger in the door, it swelled up bad, went to hospital, drained it, bandaged it X-Rayed it sent him home, then rang us back up 4 days later panicking saying "Bring him back ASAP, he has broken it" ***, then my cousin goes in to get her knee operated on, they do something that she didnt even need, they were reading some one elses notes, how ****** mad is that?

Its when I hear ****e like this it puts me right off getting my hips done, I have lost total faith in the NHS, its scary how disorganised they are, a few years back my uncle had his knee operated on and they left some surgical scissors inside him, insane or what, 100% true on my babies life!

Wow thats mental, an even more hectic week, dont do things by half you family do they?

Yeh they aint the best in the world fella, the only i could praise them is when me lad got bit by a dog, the plastic surgeons at Aldarhey were great, ya cant even tell that much now, considering it was over stitches on the outside of his face

Yeah, Alderhey is in a different league. when my eldest lad pulled a pot of boiling gravy off the worktop and burned his arm/hand, we rushed him to the walk in clinic in Leigh, the bandaged him up and we had to go back the following day, he was seen and told he had to go to Alderhey, he was there for over a week, but they properly looked after him and my wife who had to stay with him.

Right, back to cars, :)

I have now slowly started to sift through various classifieds to get an idea of what to go for and iam in a bit of a muddle, well its about a choice between a saloon 1.9 TDi, an Avant 1.9 TDi, or a Quattro 1.9 TDi???

I have also noticed that some of the cars are only 90 BHP, so what do I need to be looking at, is it the "Red I" ones that are 110 BHP? also is there a big difference in performance between the Quattro and the 2WD 110 BHP versions?

I need a bit of guidance here guys so I dont end up with duff motor or a 90 BHP one with a Red badge on it lol, would i benefit from the Quatrro or is it gonna sap the power of the 1.9 lump, also potential issues with the 4WD????

On paper, there doesnt seem to be much difference in the performance of the 2WD vs the 4WD but in real life I can assume this being different, to me the A4 is a biggish heavyish car so a 1.9 diesel driving a 4WD system seems to me would be way underpowered, but I could be wrong, this is the sort of things I need to know, is the 4wd far more superior in the handling stakes etc, I here that most A4s will require a set of bottom arms quite frequently?

Any help or advice would be great, all the best Steve :)

Hi Steve,

Yeh the red i is the 110 usually, which is what i would go for, as for 4WD, that choice is mainly down to you, one of my mates is well against it if its only a 1.9 as he thinks it would use more fuel due to been heavier, but that all depends if you are going to mod it or not.

My money would be on the Avant or Quattro, as they both come with all the bells and whistles inside, the 90hp are a dog, they feel so slow its unreal

Thanks, Adam.

Did they do the B5 with a 115 BHP 1.9 TDi in too, iam sure I have seen one advertised, from what people have told me, they have advised me to go for the 110 BHP as they can be easily modded and are a bombproof old lump, just looking at some of the mileages are a testament to these engines and build quality, saying that, you cant beat German build quality:

"Let the Germans build the cars, and leave the French to their cooking" LOL :)

Yeah I do like the Avants, they are one sporty looking estate car!

As for estate cars, here is a German, Diesel, Estate, its that Blacksmoke one I mentioned earlier ;)

Once you've had quattro you'll never want fwd again.

The only issue with a Quattro 1.9TDI is the only made them in pre-facelift.

The 115 engine is a PD lump, rather than the earlier VE engines, and was only fitted to very late B5 A4 TDi's

Thanks mate,

TBH, I like the early shape cars, my only concern was if the 4wd would blunt the performance in a big way?

I have had a few 4x4 cars but not an A4, but I do like the look of the Avant Quatrros, they look proper sporty with the little touches like the grill badge and the sports seats and steering wheel etc, as long as its not snail slow compared to the 2wd I will hunt a Quatrro down :)

PS: Is the PD lump better than the VE?, silly question that, what I mean is are they prone to certain expensive potential faults etc, I understand the PD is more efficient

Right Iam now on a serious hunt for a car now I have the funds, I have seen one local to me on a X reg (Avant) it says its 115 BHP, is this correct?

It has done a fair few miles, over 200k but it looks quite straight and its at the right sort of price for me, if it is a 115 BHP would this be the PD engine and would it be easy to chip/remap as the 110 BHP?

Also is there a section on here for cars for sale as I cant seem to navigate very well at the moment, so a point in the right direction would be great :)
