iPhone 5

Sweet! Downloading!

Not a big deal on iPad. A few cosmetic updates in App Store, but other than that I have a clock! No passbook on iPad so it's a bit of an anticlimax so far. Phone is just updating.

The ability to add photos/videos to emails from within the actual email app instead of having to go to the camera roll is a welcome addition.
'Do not disturb' might come in handy too. :ninja:

Downloaded iOS 6 on my boys iPod and I will be staying on ios 5. iOS 6 is god offal. Google maps is a big step back no street view.

I went from using an iPhone to a HTC and I lasted a month with it, the battery life was shocking was getting about 5hrs max from it then it broke very unexpectedly so I went back to a trusted iPhone.

Bit of a swizz with the replacement maps app too. The spoken directions are only available on the 4S and newer. Wouldn't have killed then to let iPhone4 users have them too.

'Do not disturb' might come in handy too. :ninja:

I take this back!!

Once again, a good idea/feature in theory, but in reality its crap.

Once 'Do not disturb' (DND) is activated (which silences all alerts, phone calls, etc) you have got the option of allowing phone calls from chosen contacts to still sound. Sounds like a good idea, right?? Wrong!

When you go into DND settings there is a section which allows you to specify which contacts you want to let bypass DND. The first thing I noticed is that you can't allow individual contacts or numbers, you can only allow those who are in your favourites list in the phone app.
So lets say I'm going into a meeting or something and I only want my phone to ring if Joe Bloggs from my contact list calls... I have to 1) add Joe to my favourites list, and 2) remove everyone else who is in my favourites list.

Refusing to believe Apple could be this stupid and ruin a perfectly good idea of a new setting I scrolled down a bit and found an option which gives you the ability to allow groups to bypass DND. Genius!!

So now I can add certain contacts to a group and give that group permission to bypass DND. Ok, it not as good as it would be if I could just give 'bypass DND' permission to individual contacts, but it will still achieve what I want.

So off I go to create a group and to add contacts to it......

Hmmmm... how do I create groups???

I can't.

You cannot... i repeat CANNOT... create groups on your iPhone!! :faint:

You can only create them from a mac or a PC using Outlook etc, and then you have to sync them with your phone for them to appear and be available to add to DND. And this will have to be done every time you want to add/change group members.

Seriously... like really???

And add to that..... a new email feature that removes the 'refresh/check for new emails' button that can be got to from anywhere in your email list, no matter how far down the list you are, and replaces it with a 'pull down to refresh' action, so now you have to scroll right to the top of your email list and then pull everything down a bit more and wait while it checks for new emails!

Who are the people that design these settings???

I'm off to find more stuff to b*tch about.

Been told by our I.T. not to update our work issue Iphone 4s's with ios6 just yet. They'll contact us all in a week with further instructions.

I used the google maps app alot, and the new maps app (if you can call it that) in IOS6 is total cr@p. So today I upgraded my iphone to the Galaxy S3, so both my wifes & my iphones & ipad will be up for sale and replaced with Android. Apple can go .........

Seems to be a lot of moaning going on.... People just want to hate it seems. It's not going to be perfect.

And come on, maps isn't bad at all?!? I personally don't give a damn if it doesn't have street view.

My favourite addition is the panoramic camera, excellent quality even if it has been a long time coming!

For its price point it should be the best the paint shouldn't easily be scratching off the back

Why shouldn’t people moan & complain, apple removed a function of the phone that was the best on the market and replaced it with an inferior application and google maps will never appear on the phone again, so you will have to put up the cr@p apple maps for the continuing life of the product. Google have spent years on mapping and street view so apples maps are not going to get better overnight it’s going totake apple years to sort their maps out. The apple support forums are now littered with people complaining about IOS6 and with people wanting to move back to IOS 5.1 it’s a joke, and so are apple.

Just picked up an iPhone 5, very light, lighter than I thought it would be! Going to have a play with it before I say anything good or bad about it.

With the back lash they are getting and the fact it's public knowledge about the new google maps app they might not have a choice but to allow it and then once apples map app is up to scratch they would remove the google one from the app store. Probably not the first time they have done something like that.

After lots of reading of reviews/features/etc I'm jumping the Apple ship after two years of sailing.
I've got an iPhone4 and I just can't see any "day-to-day" software improvements that the new iPhone (and IOS 6) is going to offer me.
Built in Sat-nav... who cares, there's a million apps that offer this already.
Facetime over 3G.... who cares, Tango already does this.
Passbook... who cares, no one will use it after the novelty wears off.
Etc etc... who cares, no one cares.

Samsung Galaxy S3*.... here I come.

*with its eye recognition so the phone doesn't go into sleep while reading stuff, its ability to allow you to text/email at the same time as watching videos, its smart dial feature, removable battery, memory card slot giving almost a 100gb of storage, smart alerts and freedom from the itunes stranglehold, to name but a few "day to day" features.

And you also get the hurendous prices to fix it when it goes wrong. Tacky plastic frames that break, screens cost over £100 + fitting if you break it etc etc

And you also get the hurendous prices to fix it when it goes wrong.

Its got a two year warranty, and if after two years it goes wrong you'd be eligible for an upgrade anyway.

screens cost over £100 + fitting if you break it etc etc

If an iphone 5 screen breaks then it costs almost £200, and they'll just swap your phone for a refurb'd handset.

But yeah, i've read the odd report that say the Samsung screens can break if you're not careful. :sos:

Don't Samsung make iPhones screen.

And after that 2 year period, how much will an S3 be worth over an iPhone 5 on a mobile buying site? I'd happily guess at half, if less

That was the biggest bonus for me, after 2 years of abuse, my 4 made it without a problem, then car phone warehouse gave me £250 cash for it!

To be honest, I don't choose phones based on what they'll be worth in 2 years time. I get them for what they are worth to me when using them.

Not sure how you managed to get £250 on a 4. That's the trade-in price of a one year old 4S. The 4 is only gets you about £140.
Samsungs get you about £50 less than the equivalent spec iPhone, so not a major difference.

I read an article earlier about the actual hardware cost of the Galaxy S3 vs iPhone5... the iPhone is £200 and the Samsung is £240. Gotta admit I was surprised by that.

I've been messing with my 5 all weekend now, and its brilliant. A massive upgrade from my old 4, which is still going strong after 2 years. Maps may be its only downfall for me, but I can live with that. It's lighter, thinner, faster, the camera is infinitely better, and it actually fits in my trouser pocket without making me look like I'm wearing mc hammers trousers.

I cant wait to get mine tomorrow. What colour did you go for Paul. What size? X

Went for the black and slate, the white would get dirty way too quickly in my dirty job. Only the 16gb too, I still had 5gb free left on my 4 after 2 years. It's getting a bit of a hammering from some people, but I can't see why yet.

So...

Had my iPhone 5 32GB for a few days and thought I would post up my thoughts.

Bought it outright from Carphone Warehouse the other week and it was delivered to my door on launch day. All great. I was told over the phone that all I needed to do was ring EE (Orange) and they will activate it there and then and also transfer my number over. This wasn't the case. Had to wait till the weekend to go into Carphone and KICKED OFF big time about the false info. They quickly sorted it and activated. (Apparently EE have to wait 48 - 78hrs to receive my details from Carphone)

On to the phone.

My thoughts are the same as WillowsDad. Its light, easy to hold, looks great (Black and slate) lightning fast and very very good. Loving the new apps. Never had Siri before so its a great gimmick, doubt i'll ever use it for anything serious though. The maps is ok. Few issues with certain places but its turn-by-turn navigation which is nice.

I know there were some rumours about the anodised backing getting scratched easily so I bought a Belkin sheer matt case doda with a ZAGG HD Screen and Rear Protector to keep it in good nick.

A few issues I have noticed... The camera is brilliant but I noticed a bug with the flash where its out of time with the shutter so results in dark photos. Read on a MAC forum that a simple turn off, turn on will sort it. It did. Some places on the Maps are spelt incorrectly. I miss street view but rumour has it that Google are going to build their own App to launch on the App Store. They will probably get approval as they will add in a specific feature that the Apple Maps don't have (Eg - Streetview) and will get round the approval process.

I know some people hate the iPhone and love the Samsung so here goes. We all have S3s here at work and bar one, we hate them!! They are massive, too big to hold and there is a lot of thumb movement to do certain things. The battery life is pants if you use it normally. It drops calls, crashes when on calls. The Samsung Kies software is useless. It will back up Apps but then it won't replace on your phone. I agree that the screen is excellent quality (believe it's resolution is better than the I5). The camera is pretty good too.

Pretty chuffed with mine so far. I upgraded from a 4 so probably more of a noticable upgrade than going from a 4S. Sold my 4 on ebay, got £237 for it, so that went half way to paying for the 5. I also only went for a 16GB model this time, my 4 was a 32GB model but since having unlimited data and such a good 3G signal with Three, i've found I use Spotify to stream all of my music and haven't used my ipod function for about 6 months!

The one thing though that has absolutely blown me away on the 5 is the speed of the 3G service i'm getting on Three (i think it uses the new HSPA+ or something like that), nearly 18mbps download, thats faster than my home broadband (and I thought that was quick).

Jeez,I pre ordered mine and still not seen sight or sound of it although the phone company did take the money out...which was nice, rang customer service who informed me that so many orders were taken and they could look at when my order would be fulfilled also they stated that everyones money was taken as well...I replied I bet your bank manager is rubbing his hands :jester:-no reply to that.

Anyway cancelled the order and the refund will take three to five days yet was virtually instant when taking it
