hi everyone

my 20tdi avant is due a service not had the car that long

so gave audi a call today and they quoted me £299.00

so popped along to the garage that sevices our vans and got a quote from him £90.00

so i asked if he uses audi parts and he said he uses porchse parts

i,m really stumped has what to do i wasen,t expecting there to be such a big difference

i would be grateful for any advice as i,m confused!

Audi charge a fortune, i needed a new tandum pump fitted and audi wanted £790 and part is only £250 from audi so rest was labour, i got it done for £400 all in! If you have audi extended warrenty you must get it done by audi as if you dont it will void your warrenty - this is only if you have extended th warrenty not if you purchased it from audi and it still under warrenty from them. Personally i dont trust dealers from past experience of having a car service and a month later no oil left and once inspected by local garage they hadnt done the work, so i and get my local garage to do it who have always done my cars and my familys cars, but up to you at the end of it, + side from audi they will do a full check and let you know of any issues that there may be with you car.

I think it all depends on what you get in the service. All filters? Wheels removed? Diagnostic check? Reset service light correctly etc. As a VAG specialist I'd charge 200 for a full service

What do you include in a full service?

I thought Audi did fixed price servicing @ £199, or has that stopped now?
Personally (as mentioned above) unless you need main dealer history for a warranty, I wouldn't touch them. Not through any bad experience, just the price.

My local audi stealer charges 130-150 per hour labour.Also depends what mileage service it is.I know that they include a brake fluid change after 3 years for example, and cam belt checks

I wouldn't go near them, took my a3 to Audi a couple years back, and they gave me a of £3k worth of stuff they reckoned needed doing! I.e turbo replaced, cv boots ect. Which didn't seem right, so I took it to my local garage, where the mechanic use to work for Audi. And he told me that it looked like they'd sliced my cv boots, which apparently was a regular thing that went on when he worked for Audi. Also there was nothing wrong with my turbo!! At the end of the day, that's how most dealerships make there money is through servicing and repairs.

Local independent specialists all the way for me. They survive on reputation and generally know more about what they are doing. If it's a routine service at an Audi dealer, you're going to get the YTS trainee doing it.

just a bit concerned with what oil he will be using i think i will ask him to make sure its a good grade

and pay the extra if needed still a lot cheaper than the dealer

just hope he dont throw me out for being a dipstick

Buy some Castrol edge online and give it him to use. He won't mind, just get him to knock some money off the price.

Full service from us is oil and filter change. Full inspection. Additional air filter pollen filter fuel filter (diesel only) spark plugs (petrol only). Wheels removed. Diagnostic check. Check cambelt visually. Stamp service book etc. I used to work for a dealer and moved to an independent apart from money never looked back

My service isn't due for another 13,700 miles or so and I'll be changing the oil and filter myself once it hits 10,000 miles as I don't really believe in this long life servicing thing. Who leaves oil in an engine for 20,000 miles/2 years?!

I have branches In Leicester. Loughborough. Hinckley. Tamworth and Northampton. Full service on 3.0tdu normally about £290. Could do it for about £230 ish. Where abouts are you based?

I'm in Leicester myself, can you not mention the company name over the forum?

If I'm really honest, I would do the servicing myself as I'm qualified to the right level but I wish to maintain the value of the vehicle for future by keeping the service history book stamped and up to date. The car is currently on long life servicing but I will be doing an oil and filter change myself once it reaches 10,000 miles to service due. Thereafter my plan is to hand it over to a dealership or a specialist (such as yourself) once the service reminder is up.

The car has FSH at the moment but only the first two stamps are at the dealership. The last two are at an Audi specialist somewhere around Birmingham. For this reason I feel as if it would be pointless taking to an Audi dealership now as it would not be full Audi SH record anyway?

It's each to their own concerning the stamps but I can prove its been serviced with the receipts and things have been changed a lot more regularly than the dealer/specialist would.

Im on fixed services now, every 10k. You can reset on the dash controls, instructions are in the owners manual, it's dead easy. No need for VCDS.

This is the expensive bit, oil, it takes 8.2 litres to fill from empty. You can get deals online for 25 litre tubs of Castrol edge, which are worth it depending how many services you end up doing.

The other big expense is the fuel filter, a gen Audi one is around £45 + vat.

I just refuse to pay someone to do a job that is so easy and quick to do myself but they charge a load and have my car for the day. If you actually took the time to work out how much you save in time (dropping your car off, then being witout it) and money. You'd do it yourself without hesitation.

Also, when was the last time you took it to a specialist and you got a receipt from the Audi parts department for parts used? They can say they use Audi parts but actually use pattern parts.

Same with the oil, they could use anything, you'd never know.

I think I'm gonna leave it on longlife due to the miles I cover (25k+ p.a.) and just do an oil and filter change myself every other 10k and give it to a decent specialist every time the service warning is up. The prices aren't as bad the dealers and at it'd include a full diagnostics and inspection as Chris mentioned above so any faults can also be picked up too and I get the stamp in the book.

I'll be keeping the receipts from my own oil changes anyway. Oil and filter shouldn't be too bad from TPS (genuine parts) if you have one local to you. Although saying that I get trade prices rather than retail.

I can see what you're saying about keeping receipts and all, used to do the exact same for my Golf. Only considering a different approach this time as the car holds alot more value than my previous car.
