HI,
just bought an audi a4 2.0tdi s line with around 109k miles on clock. Test drove the car around country lanes where the chap lived and it seemed fined.

Driving home on the motorway, after some time decided to give it some. When I had my foot to the floor, the car pulled alright but on acceleration it juddered.
Driving slow and accelerating slowly its fine but when you put your foot down it shakes quite bad and judders. The engien is slightly noisy on idle but the car does idle fine. I thought it maybe the dual mass but shouldn't this judder when pulling away and at really low revs?
Injector issues should prevent the car from starting right?

Puzzled as to what this could be and also not very happy about the whole affair. Not a fan of takingcar to main dealerships and spending huge amounts of money getting it sorted when same thing could be done at an independent. What do you guys think it is?

Need to get it seen to ASAP. Im hoping it isnt something too serious!

Thanks

Try changing the fuel filter. The service manual only calls for them to be changed every 60k, I do mine every 20k.

The engine is a bit noisy and fuel consumption is nowehre near as good as it should be. Has had oil change etc. Will be fuel and air filter

Yeah change the fuel filter, had this on mine and on my missus' Altea exact same symptoms buddy

140 or 170 ?

It is a 140bhp model.
Been told it could be oil pump. The oil light or oil pump light is not on. Had it checked on computer and injectors seem to be fine. Could the fuel filter actually make it sound that bad?

Was registered in May 2005. What engine code could this be?

explain the sound
i had a kinda tappets sound and juddering loud tappets
it was the chain and sprocket for the oil pump
easy job tho.

its a BLB engine code

The engine is rattling alot on idle. Disconnected MAF but that didn't make a difference either.

the BLB has a common fault on the oil pump search it
but they usaly just let go and **** the car
im thinking same as mine was chain an sprocket but without hearing i cant be sure
where are you from ?

Cheers Bez. Yeah its tappeting sounds and rattling etc. Sounds similar to what your saying. The thing is, I'd liek to be able to get it diagnosed and get it sorted (obviously). Whats scaring me is that getting oil pump sorted and then finding out its something else.
Never had any problems with countless audis have had in the past.

:-(

right does the noise get faster when you rev the car ?
does it get louder when you rev the car ?

sounds like the chain and sprocket
only way to check is take it to bits
mine was done for £150 from a mate and id did over 10k with the noise

SoAm I right in saying there are 2 types of fuel pump? plastic and the metal type. Plastic being much cheaper in price?

Would there be a difference in sound or drive if the whole fuel pump was about to conk out?

i think you maybe reading this wrong
im on about the OIL pump

Appreciate that mate. Will try and explain this to mechanic. Won't be using Audi as I suspect the bill would easily be over £1k no problem!
Had a few b6 a4s and biggest problem was DMF which was easy to diagnose.

Sorry mate oil pump!
I was reading it wrong but was also searching for fuel pump on another page!

if hes any good at his job and you ask him to check the chain and sprocket on the OIL pump
then he will know
if he needs any more explaining then go somewhere else.

I don't get why it judders when driving and accelerating though?

no idea mine drove ok when foot down juddering
lad who i took it to knew stright away with the noise.
when new parts fitted no noise no judder.

Yeah juddering happens when foot is down. Sounds like a similar issue. Will get it checked ASAP.

Nice one pal!

Yes, it could sound that bad. My mates 170 sounded like it was ripping itself to bits when his was blocked. (even though Audi claimed to have changed it 2 months before on a service).

Is it not just worth chucking a new filter on before presuming the worst? It may save you time and money.

Have a fuel filter and air filter ready so will be changing that first, I'm doubting it will make a difference but can never guess these things. Then will have the oil pump examined.
If it does turn out to be chain and sprocket, what is the best item to replace with? Standard? or have I got this confused with having the whole unit replaced with the newer oil pumps which are gear operated?

Can someone recommend a place I can get the chain and tensioner etc from? Finding it difficult as it's discontinued apparently. Spoke to a couple of places and they only stock the blanace shaft etc for gear driven conversion and this costs £895+vat!!

Cheers mate. Will be finding out tomorrow what the damage will be. I'm hoping its the most simple of things to do with oil pump and don't have to replace the whole unit!

Ordered gear driven oil pump. Will be doing whole timing belt kit aswell while it's all being done.

Chain driven pump converted to gear driven unit, timing belt water pump etc changed along with full service. Apparently running well now. Juts a slightly noisy air con belt/pulley.
Ordered the unit from a company advertising them on ebay, came with 3 month warranty also. Brand new I think the part alone is £900+ vat. Cost me £400 for the pump, sprocket etc. Name of comapny - Volksbreakers (on ebay).
Was quite difficult to get the sprocket off the crank. My mechanic cut the sprocket at different places and then hammered it off. New one goes on with a bit of grease/hammering.
Thanks again bez!

Car now drives amazing. Soo smooth and no rattling what so ever!

Nice outcome, shame this problem exists in the first place but that chap on ebay looks good.

Glad it all worked out for you .
