Reesy's Big Turbo A3

Hello Fred.

Have you not read the previous posts? Map is all sorted, so simplifying the PCV is just something else to do.

yeah man, this is some awesome work. bet your well chuffed with the results now the map is done.

Had about 10 days trouble free motoring now and I have to admit, I love it..

It's not horrendous on fuel, drives really smoothly and is just effortless. Decided that I fancied taking it for a thrashing down the bypass as the drive from work was really boring and slow, and the car loved it. The fella in the Focus St, not so much.

quality, i cant wait to get mine mapped, not long to go now.

i don't really think the 1.8t engine is a thirsty engine even when at a high level of tune with in reason not including BT stuff

It drinks fuel when you boot it but for general driving it's better then the K03s as it's not trying to spool all the time.

Here's open for another discussion.

Assuming you use good fuel then Timing pull around 3-6 is surely a good figure, this is based on runs taken on the hotest day of the year and after a few runs. Higher than normal temps, are all going to add to higher timing pull. Considering the CF goes from 0-12 where 0 indicates no timing pull and 12 is the max from which above the knock is going to occur.

In an ideal world then yes I agree a timing pull of 3 will always be ideal, but then if you get a really cold day timing pull could drop to 0 and thus you may not be at max timing, and even at running a max of 6 then there is plenty of room for warmer days and sh*t fuel..

You may all go ooooooo but the Cupra R I had for a week, which was mapped by a well know company in near to me in woking, had stock timing maps on a stage 2 and it, when I logged it ran 10's. through over 60% of the log.. and this is from a respected company!!........

I can only imagine comments, like " timing pull is there for a reason, the engines protected, whats the issue?" becuase i've seen comments like that on other forums...

I agree it's a little high in places, and it is something that I mentioned to Chris that would be addressed, and I would also be interested to see on the 1st run of the day, when the weathers a bit cooler and the engine hasn't had huge amounts of heat soak what they are then, because if they where around 3 consistanly then it would be perfect. You can't unfortunately run optimal timing all the time there has to be a comprise..

What's anyone else's thoughts?

My comments:
on those logs as presented its pulling too much timing imho

also, leaner initially than I would personally run, and richer top end than I would choose also.

yes hot weather blah blah will exaggerate this promotion of det, but how much of the knock control do you want to consume in the name of getting the max out of it?

your example of pulling 10's on a stage 2 with stock ign timing does'nt really say anything... other than that setup had an issue..
a Stage 2 would not have 10' different timing to stock, so something is amiss with that engine.

I have an LCR in here now, which has had issue on huge timing pull for a long time.. quite what I find remains to be seen.. the software on the car not being the cause, nor oil injestion either (commonly seen from tired engine/turbo, and malfunctioning pcv systems)

Pulling high timing hurts power... knock sensing is sensitive (arguably overly so if pushing for the max, but you erode the safeties vag/bosch dialed in to acomodate real world temps, fuel octanes, and engine wear and tear)

Strangely quiet week as the car has been running like a champ.

Got the clunking noise fixed last Friday which was nice. Changed the droplinks out as well so all front suspension is now done. Also fitted the new N75 which is definitely holding the boost better. Need to do some logs, but the boost gauge isn't as happy at lower RPM's which is good.

Went to Wales. My old man drove the car and was impressed, didn't get chance to have a sensible drive against his s4 but did get chance to have a go against a civic type R along the Autobahn. All I'll say is that the remap has taken any limiter that German cars come with..

Will be another update later on as the car is getting the front brakes sorted out tonight, as they are pretty much dead.

Also sold a few bits this week, so I can finally get some disposable income back.

Well, as the wheels were off during the engine build I noticed the discs and pads were low.

Through ScottB5 some lcr brakes came up and I bought them. Looked at the R32 set up, but the discs are amazingly expensive and have heard mixed reviews about them.

Got them fitted on Friday, here are some pics:

Might want to turn down the brightness on you monitor, between the caliper and the shiny wheels..

Car stops so much better now, not as much pedal travel either. A lot more confidence when braking down from 3 figure speeds or just braking in traffic. A winner all round.

Not sure on the green calipers yet, looks a bit 80's rave with the blue of the car, but we'll see.
If not, black beckons.

And a random one of an s4 vs a3 maf:

Wow, just looked at them in normal size and you can really see the amazing quality of the 3gs camera! :lmfao:

Time to get the car clean and get some proper pics with a proper camera mate.

Them 3gs pictures gives me a head ache.

Welldone on the brakes.
I should have kept them really. :(

Will get a proper clean when I get me new wheels on, which should be less then 2 weeks. Then I will be putting loads of pics up.

No point, they'd have been wasted on your car..

Large port heads, talk to me.

Have the chance to get an absolute bargain from an AGU..

Might do a Dave and just buy it and wait until I eventually buy rods and fit them together, but are they really that worthwhile?

Totally worthwhile... they just seem to love timing and all sorts... its the cheapest 'ported' head you can buy...

No need to port it for the turbo you have but get the valve guides checked for wear... normally its just the exhausts the wear loads and worth getting them done

<tuffty/>

as above, large port heads are the way to go, i'm fairly sure I saw some flow testing results where the stock large port out flowed a ported and polished small port. for the relatively low cost, it just seems so worth while. As Westy says, you're going to have to pull the head when your 25psi estate throws a rod anyway ;) so you might as well bang an AGU head on whilst you're at it!

With the new n75, going up through the gears its only about 20psi now, so you can fudge cough...

Having seen a 1.8t on Friday night with a bent and twisted rod and a large chunk out the block and piston, I'm thinking of skinting myself out beyond belief and getting the rods sorted... Maybe wait a month or so, but they need to be done. Especially as I enjoy driving mine.

Oh i have an AEB head for sale too ;) Although just read about your "bargain" :(

Also know someone with an Agu head about to go on eBay

Sling some rods in mate, you'll have to in the end any way when you least expect it then and it'll cost more
I thought I'd be alright then ended up missing the ring trip and cost me a fortune trying to get parts when no where seemed to have any rods etc...so much better when it's planned ;)

There was only one when i put mine on and that was £199 buy it now so i undercut it and now every buggers selling them! :(

AGU is the way to go..

Large port head and higher comp pistons

I think I'll try and get hold of some AGU piston's between now and when it all gets fitted.. It's all about hunting round for the bargains though which means I have to be reasonably patient.

Bargain hunting is the way forward. Most of my build has been made up of bargain bits, favours, or freebies ;)

You take the p1ss at bargain hunting. Surprised people don't end up paying you when you buy things from them...

And heavy discounting :p

Heavy discounting ftw, just a shame the parts man has lost all sense of taste and got a jap car..

Good point..

But he hasnt wanted anything from me in a while so i guess he feels he can insult to his hearts content. BUT when the day comes...he shall not be rewarded with heavy discounting!

It's nothing personal, I might order some bits from you just so you don't feel unwanted..

The main reason is that I only had a couple of weeks to gather all the parts, and I reckon it could take that to get through your super high security packaging :lmfao:

Sorry Jason and Stacey, but I now have a large port head..

I will be getting the inlet mani port matched to save any hassle.

Suppose I best get some rods, rings (possibly) and bearings sorted. Don't think I'll get it done in time for ADI, although that would have been very nice.

I'd like to see that.....

I don't think it can be done, as the large port is bigger than the small port by more than the wall thickness of the runners, it's a MASSIVE difference!

I think if it were that simple Tufty and Welly would have done that years ago, especially with Bills talent for porting the crap out of everything!
