question on uprated DV and boost controller for stage 2+

I was advised to get the boost controller and a Forge DV before my stage 2+ custom tune. Reason being the boost controller will hold boost much better and also prevent boost from spiking to dangerous level. As for the Forge DV, it is also to hold boost better compared to the oem DV. My ride is a S3 Sportsback running a hybrid K04, is the oem DV not good enough for stage 2+? Does a boost controller need a boost tap for install? A mate of mine with similar setup and tune has boost holding at 1.6 - 1.7 bar. Would like to hear some views here. Thanks.
 
Ran OEM DV with S2+ for 30k miles with no issues. Haven't heard of anyone changing boost controllers.

If you don't mind me asking who suggested this?
 
^^ Some guys fr a popular workshop in Singapore that I met who were running Owen hybrid K04 on their S3 and GTI and goes to this local tuner who is also very experienced with Jap makes. I know boost controllers are common in Evo/Rex but have not heard many lads installing them in VAG cars. So wanted to find out if anyone here has experience with boost controller in their Audi.

What is the max boost on a S2+ and S3 tune? Would an Owen hybrid K04 w necessary hardware, ie uprated i/c, tbe, hpfp be considered Stage 2+ or stage 3? My mate's S3 with Owen K04, THS i/c, TBE, drop-in filter, Forge DV, is running 340bhp and 544nm and his boost spikes to 1.6-1.7 bar then tapers slightly and hold at 1.4-1.5bar using the boost controller.

Also, wouldn't the Forge DV with harder spring help hold boost better than the OEM DV?

S2+ is about 22psi from memory, but would need to validate

Need HPFP, CAI, and TBE as minimum for S2+, and IC is good if your local ambient air ambient temps are regularly over 20 degrees centigrade.

Not to sure on hybrid turbos, you may be best PMing Alex in the S3 8P section about those as he has lots of experience.

I think the OEM DV is electronic rAther than vacuum controlled so it's either circuit open or closed. I've not known anyone have issue with leakage of boost even under 2+ boost levels. Personally I think it's more responsive than boost actuated unit, but I think the forge dv has been revised since I had their v1 unit.

The Forge DV is a very good product,but probably no better than the current Rev D DV from Audi,but certainly the one on my car has lasted well.

You don't need a boost controller until you exceed 1.8bar,as that's the limit of the N75 controller and ECU.

Mine was running 440bhp on the stock controller at 1.6 bar for thousands of miles with no issues,but to go above that,you will need one.

I was advised very firmly against hybrid K04's,but this was before the arrival of things like the Loba Lo4xx which is a very different beast.
The best you're going to reliably see from an S3 with stock internals is about 440bhp and 440lbs torque,but by then you will need RS4 injectors,and a host of other parts.

I understand the Owen K04 are good for about 380bhp; I am surprised that not many in UK (least in this forum) run their turbo as they are very popular amongst the VAG local guys over at this side of the pond.

The only Owen i know is Owen Developments over here,and I expect they're not connected.

If it's good for 380bhp,then I think it fits in with the bulk of the hybrids over here by offering little over the stock K04,which tops out at 360-370bhp,and to be honest,for that,I wouldn't bother in cost terms alone.

If I were you,i would look at the Loba LO4xxx turbo,which will fit,and offer a LOT more power,but you would need RS4 injectors for over 400bhp,and an auxiliary LP fuel pump for over 440bhp,plus the uprated HPFP if you haven't already got that.

A boost controller will require a boost tap,or an ECU feed,otherwise it has no idea what the boost level is.

I understand their K04 kit could do 380bhp easily on GTI, so on a S3 maybe it could touch 400bhp with necessary hardware? I suppose the Owen Developments K04 kit will be comparable to the Loba LO4XXX kit as both companies rework on the K04 + manifold? Loba does not have a local agent here and I only heard of them recently, otherwise I would seriously consider trying out their kit.

Looking at my mate's graph, his low to mid-end torque is amazing. However, he does not have a hpfp - maybe that is why power tops out at 340bhp, to be safe? My tune is scheduled this Wed, looking forward to it *fingers crossed* Will post the graph up, for views.

I run a hybrid k04 from backdraft, they told me tthe max I would see was 300ish hp which is bang on what it produced. But u guys are referring to hp levels that I was told was not achievable with the k04 turbo?? Have to do some more reaserch into Owen etc.

Results are out.... Engine power: 355.6Cv 485Nm @ 1.65bar, relative humidity 80%, ambient temp 27.5deg.

Hardware: Owen Developments K04, THS i/c, Forge Twintake, Forge DV (yellow spring), Milltek downpipe, Bastuck catback, oem fuel pump. I wonder how much more power would the car gain in a cooler climate like UK. lol

Nice,but no different from the results from a stock K04 and Revo software.

Mine was turning out 360bhp and 490Nm(360lbs) at this level of tune.

I think demonstrates the limits of most hybrids,other than things like the Loba LO4xxx,which is capable of nearly 500bhp,with appropriate hardware.
 
No fuel pump internals?

Amazed it can run that kind of power without fuel cuts.
