Bridgestone Tyres worn after 22 months and 9000 miles - is this right?

Hi,

In Oct 2010 I was told I needed new Tyres after an Audi service as they were all wearing low. I therefore shopped around and found the same tyres they were originally supplied with:

Bridgestone S001
BR235/40Y18S001
235/40Y18

Kwik fit had an offer if supplying all 4 of £158 each which at the time was the best deal I could fine so I went ahead.

However now (Aug 2012) almost 22 months later and only 9000miles later (I only drive locally), I was told by Audi as part of service / MOT,your back tyres look now and are fine, but your fronts are at 2mm and 3mm soneed replacing so must be old.

I just phoned Kwik fit making a casual enquiry not detailing the case and they have said tyres should not wear this quick.

Note the wear across the types is even. So 2mm all across one and 3mm across the other. The back tyres are both at 6mm

Could I have been sold a dodgy batch and am I entitled toask for free replacement?

Any suggestions and opinions are welcome.

Sorry wrong car but my original tyres have done 8000 miles on the rear of my 2011 8P. They are in 3mm and the fronts are in about 6mm. The tyres have never been swapped. They are 225/40 x18 bridgestone REO50. Think I'm gonna steer away from Bridgestones in future.
 
I can't see what car you have but something you may not be aware of is that some of the A4's like the 2.0TDi's are recommended to run on 'extra load' tyres..... i.e. tyres which are designed to cope with the weight of your car.

As ever, tyre wear has everything to do with the way you drive, the pressures you run, the type of driving you do - but also different tyres have different wear ratings.

You could well get a couple more thousand out of these but do take care with your specs when replacing them - it's not all about the 'brand' :ermm:
 
It is fwd but it shouldn't wear the rears twice as quick as the front. I Run correct pressures which Audi recommend and check them every couple of week. They are also the original set
 
Swop the front wheels onto the back and the back wheels onto the front, should get more out of them and can see if the rears then wear as quick up front as the original up front ones

Rears have about 3mm and fronts 6mm

Thanks for all the input. I'm going to pop to kiwk fit to see what they say.
My car is a 56 plate Audi Avant sline SE petrol car. I confess I do rely on the pressure sensors to tell me if the pressure is low. I did also put that Kwik fit nirogen in then that they recommended for the difference that makes.

When I tested the pressure once as I thought they were low, they were OK.

Interesting idea about swapping the front and backs, that would buy more time.

When I got the tyres I went with the same ones they were originally fitted with and the Kwik fit next to the main Audi in Brentford did it (at the time that was who Audi said to use).

It was also the fact that Audi phoned me and assumed only my back types were new but the front ones were old. They were suprised when I said I got them all at the same time.

Buy maybe it's just the brand is not very good and I should try something else. I migth write to Bridgestone if necessary.

I try to drive economically (e.g. not accelerating hard) as petrol is dear enough.
I did used to get about 350 miles on a full tank but now I only get about 270.
At £80ish per fill up it's not cheap (petrol)

but then again 12000 miles since May 2010 is not very high millage overall.

by the way if the esp light is the one the flashes if you wheel spin away, I've only see that come on about twice in the cars history (my ownerhship of it)
 
I went through a pair of conti sc2's every 8000 on the front of my b7 tdi

As a tyre dealer what i would recommend is if you aren't happy the people you bought them off can send them back for you as every say 6-8 weeks a panel of experts meet up and look over tyres which have been sent back to them for suspected faults. What then happens is if they find fault with the tyre in anyway to agree with you they will contact YOU directly with an allowance off a future purchase, now obviously this means in the mean time you have to buy a pair of tyres but at least this way you are possibly going to get something back from the manufacturer.

You would be surprised, especially the first line brands are usually pretty good at this so just ask your supplier to fill out a tyre returns form and insist on it if they don't think you will get anything out of it as it's free to try so why not? And often the tyre dealers can be wrong.

I use a 2.0tdi Quattro and my tyres have lasted so farrrrrr roughly 10k whilst i've had the car and they are getting a little low now but where i live the roads are generally poor and i do a lot of pennine driving.

Also the experts can tell if anything else has created a fault with your tyres and made them wear quickly, I hope this helps.
 
My cars been into audi a few times to check suspension set up all ok. Both rears are worn very evenly to my surprise and Audi comment saying we do see many tyres wearing this even you should be lucky.
 
Someone put a reply on another thread recently from "honest John". It said Avant rear bushes WILL wear after 60k, resulting in high rear tyre wear. It's not happened to mine but I may just be lucky.
Alternatively, get your car a full 4 wheel laser alignment check.

Which engine have you got? 270 miles from a B7 tank is less than 20mpg!

I used to get 280 miles out of a tank in the B7 RS4..
 
I think it's a 2 litre. I should add when I Say a full tank I cound until the petrol light comes on. When this is on I go and get a full tank which costs about £80.,

I am a bit worried that somethign was wrong but Audi have never found anything in the services. I do mostly make short trips. I used to get about 350 at first I'm sure.

Also on the refill the computer tells me that I have about 540 miles of petrol left when I refill.
I'm paying about 30p per mile (but better if I go on the motorwawy say, then I get better value)

Sounds like you have issues. Wearing the rears that quick and only getting that mpg, sounds like you're dragging the **** end of the car around.

He's not wearing out the rears.. its his fronts that are worn out..
 
I have the same tyres on my car, will swap them front to back when they are at 3-4mm to get a bit more life out of them.
 
I got to 286 miles before my fuel light came on this time. My journey to work is probably about 3or 4 miles drive. My I regularly visit my parents who are about 2 miles away.

So I do make a lot of short journeys.
Could something still be wrong?
 
errr actually that was not me. That was not me that said about the rears. I'm the original poster and it is my fronts wearing quicker, not my rears. Jambo26 is not the op.

But also I have maybe realsied what's happening - perhaps.

I live in a street wiht tight parking. Often I have to get into a tight space. This involves locking the stearing wheel full and then rotating the other way full lock to get in. Thinking about it this must cause wear. Even though I do short distances, I am in and out a lot.
So Maybe this is the reason?

Just struck me while I was getting out of a tight space today.
 
My bad, misunderstood his post...but your reason seems feasible. If your car is static when changing lock it might wear the tyres,but it will also put stress on the power steering, should do lock when accompanied by movement.
 
In the end I have had to buy two new Michelin Pilot Sport 3 for the front.

Kwik fit even agreed it's a btit quick after 7000 miles to be 2 / 3mm and they will send them to bridgestone to analysis.

Still annoying having to spend £355 to get them done.
