Hi all abit of a random thread so please be patient and let me know if iv waffled abit, oh and thanks and likes for comments ;)

So I haunt this site on a regular basis, im after a car at the mo and im really torn between two VAGs, its a shared car with the mrs so im having to take her into consideration :( i would have a cupra r if i had my way but she dont like them :(

So im building a case for the s3 over the TT225, the s3 just seems a proper purpousefull car where as the TT seems a bit of a posers car. Are there any major diffrences other than looks?
(i would say no diffrence but hey ho lol)

Also if i do get my own way then i would buy a pre face lift s3, but is that the right move? Do any s3s come with a large port head? And are the steering rack setup the same? I just think the 1st of a breed is usually the best (but iv been wrong before) But i can get the face lift lights and rear break lights done if i really dont like them but i had a pre face lift a3 a few years ago and it didnt bother me.

So upon buying a nagro s3 ;) itd be Badger5 tip :) 3"down pipe, fmic, jetex and a remap. That should see me the 280bhp right? And if all else fails i can do all that to a TT225?

S3 and TT racks are the same...

You just tend to find bigger 'racks' in a TT ;P

Yeh i know, the s3 hands down, just need to make sure my case is strong when it comes to persuading the mrs, after all she holds more of the budget money than me, im just putting in £1500 so i can use it the weekends.

if people want a tt they might aswell get a bike, you can get just as many people on a bike as you can in a tt, the rear seats would only fit anchild in, on paper the tt is heavier, but in the real world you prob wouldn't notice

i think most people with any car knowledge always call them gifls cars lol

the cost of a tt would cover the cost of a similar mileage s3 plus most of your mods.....

Yep all valid and going into my argument lol i know what the right choice is and im just thinking what colour and weather to get pre or post face lift, but price will probly dictate that.

On another subject, i saw an s3 with a cloth recaro interior?

looks ok i suppose and would be comfy im sure lol but....
 
leather is annoying, i'm a big lad and i tend to warm up in them, i don;t warm up in cars with fabric seats

leather cleans easier though !

Yeh i like the alcantra in blue and cream but does the fabric interior come as an optional extra? Looks like it has R embossed on them.
 
S3 is essentially a TT in an hatchback Body with better seats and more cockpit room.
The electric recaros would have been about £1500 new which would never fit in the MK1 TT.

I had the same dilemma when getting my S3.
Main reasons not to get the tt
1/ too common in Ireland, unlike the S3, unusually scarce.
2/ I'm 6.2 and looked stupid in the tt, looked like I was driving from the back seat(bubba in police academy)
3/ 2 small children, an an absolute nightmare to get booster seats in the back.
4/ I don't wear skirts.

tt's tend to be more expensive because they are newer than s3's (225 ones). Which is an argument against them because you are paying more for less car really. If you can afford an early 225 TT you could easily get a late, tidy S3.
Having said that, if your mrs won't budge, the TT isn't a bad car.

Good point, I am 6ft 3, and I had forgotton that. I chose the S3 over the TT.
Sitting in a TT was like trying to look out of a letterbox.

Well the s3 has many advantages... But TT's do look slighly better and less dated. That's about it...

just play the game, blag her head tell her the TT costs more to run and cost more to tax ... you know these things your a man right!

also tell her that if you get a TT none of your friends will talk to you and you will be laughed at, you could also say you can get more shopping in the s3 as well as the ironing board and kitchen sink...

just get an s3 you know its right and you don't want us to call you a TT **** (TT standing for twin tail because you like it two at a time).

I would point out that the TT has far more 'common' faults than the S3 does.

OK, they are the same engine, so the engine side common faults translate across, CTS, MAF, Coils etc.

But there are a lot of other ones which will bite you in the *** with a TT. The dash pod problem for one. A nightmare frankly, and not cheap either.

Also there is a common fault with the door lock mechanism. The doofer that tells the car the door is open breaks, and the car WILL lock itself even if you have opened the door. Very easy to get locked out having done it myself.

They are plauged by small issues such as the heater control switches snapping off and other IMO poor build quality issues.

That's not to say that the A3/S3 8L platform isn't without it's problems - however there are definitely less of them.

I'd like to add to the above that I did own both a TT and an S3 for a year or so.

I'd consider a TT quattro sport as long as your not bothered about having passengers but to be honest as others have said the rear seats are next to useless anyway. I've also read the A pillars can restrict visability but I have never driven a TT so cant confirm if this is true. The S3 is a better car for day to day use, as you have more boot space, and can fit 4 comfortably. Id say the interior of the TT has aged better than the S3, but the recaros in the S3 are better than the sports seats in the TT. have you posted this question on the TT owners forum, you'll probably get a different answer to your question.

Yeh im adding all to the list of excuses, the shopping in the boot will be a deal breaker me thinks. And as for not having any friends i think she would like that tbf lol

Thanks for the comments and input, i know the s3 is the way to go, was showing her a few last night and the price has quite abit of a diffrence from tt to s3.

Didnt realise there was so many niggles with the tt, thats put me off all together really, atleast i know the 8l platform.

The TT looks very dated, I think it looks like someone's put a VW Beetle in a car crusher, squished it a bit and a TT was made. Inside is quite nice but outside I'm just not a fan, each to there own I guess. I do love the new shape TT though that is a very sexy looking motor would have to be the TTS or RS though lol.

The TT looks weird, if you put red stickers on the front lights and white stickers on the back lights then reversed down the road, I bet most people wouldnt notice something wrong.

Looks a very tidy motor mate, thanks for pics. They are a better looking car than the s3 in ways, but its the whole package that makes a car. But thats not to say that i wont be rocking up in one lol

Ha i agree with the squashed beetle (but thats not a terrible thing could be a squashed morris minor ) it is each to their own, i do like the look of the TT when in the top spec but even the 225 front end is abit poo, i like the splits in the bumper on the 3.2 tho.

But i can say theres nothining about an s3 in its looks that i dislike other than the gay rear lights from the early models.

I thought you traded the s3 in for a vectra the other day lol hows the car, Have you got it sorted yet.
 
Nah mate, that was the day of AITP, my bro parked his car on my drive and we all went in the S3.

Car got sorted and it was the coilpack that was faulty....annoying little things!!

you might even be able to swap the front lights with the back ones. They almost look the same shape, could save you some money on stickers:p

So iv got £2k cash and a steetKA (its my mrs car) so wer looking to get about £16-1800 for that.

My plan is to buy an s3 for around the £3k mark and have cash over to spend on mods, the mrs is actually up for that aswell :)

Just got to make sure we get an s3 now, but i think theres more nice s3s out there in our price range than the TT.

£3,500 is a decent amount to get a nice facelift S3, I dont think they did the Nogaro Blue in pre facelift.

What are you driving the mo, btw?

And iv got a company car, new shape blue galaxy, i flashed you yesterday when you was coming off your drive.

As for a noggy s3 they are out of my budget unless a cheap one pops up, but im not that fussed about colour tbf.
