Is it just me or has some knob at audi decided to make the dipstick a pain in the tits to read. It's not so bad to read when the engine is cold but when it's hot the oil seems thinner. The point is why did audi think a black dipstick would be a good idea to check the level of a fluid which is also black. Arrrggghh! ( I dont know if this should really be in the rant section)

Mines a different Audi altogether but at least it's not broken like mine lol.

So how do you check your oil?

What annoys me even more is my dad has a vw jetta & his dipstick is orange so it's easy to read. So why not on the audi ( which basicly is a vw just a posher one)

Audi make most of their money on servicing and repairs, not new cars. So what they do is make the dipstick black so you can't see the oil line. This way it causes the less fortunate of us to take our car to Audi to be serviced, thus making them money. Personally I just wipe the oil line off, tip ex the end of my dipstick and voila, instant measure gauge easy to read :jester:

paint it ?
i just wait till the low oil light comes on then i know it needs ltr.

I just dont like idea of letting it get that low. I suppose you stop straight away as soon as the light comes on? I have thought of painting it but i'm worried the paint will flake away in the engine

Some of you lot need to behave ***! You seriously let it run till the oil light comes on? wtf? LOLz.

yes its only a ltr down
expected from audi
iv always got a ltr in every audi i own some need it some dont

That's what i thought, i always like to know my oil level is at maximum.

Incase anyone missed the jester.... I don't paint my dip stick. I wipe it clean and then measure, I can see the oil line fine.

What engine you got mate?

Im sort of with the OP on this one, the dipstick is hard to read espceially as it has a ball on the top on the bottom picking up oil through the tube it is abit hard to jugde the min and max, id probably just do the same as Bez and wait till the light comes on and keep a spare litre in the boot :)

Yeah i always keep a litre in the boot, I just wonder how long you actually have to pull over once the light comes on lol (paranoia dont you just love it)

I try to keep it about 3/4 of the way up... then you know your not going over and you've no chance going under unless you have an oil leak. I was the car every week and check fluid levels then. Just keep it all topped up.
I agree having a spare litre in the boot is always a good idea though.

you can go on for hundreds of miles theres still plenty in there

So i assume the light comes on before the oil drops below the min mark on the dipstick?

yeah 1 ltr takes it to normal level

Sweet! Cheers mate ( I'll probably still be old school & check it every month or so)

Ok so are you the dipstick or we talking about the oil level checker :jester:

Serious side now, cant see how you can not see the level line on the dipstick no matter what colour it is.

Lol. I just find it really hard read, all my past cars have always had a silver/metal dipstick so you can see the level easy. I find it hard on the eyes measuring a black fluid with a black/plastic stick.

I have the same problem it's very hard to see the level on the dipstick.

i thought it was just me as I was getting old.

i also keep oil on the car now.

You need to be careful keeping oil ON the car you know.....makes it really slippery to get in and out of and buggers up the paintwork..:p

On a serious note, i'm with the others in having no trouble reading the level off the dipstick every week.
