Reesy's Big Turbo A3

CATR deletes EGT... Problem solved.... I guess this was the missing byte. I would also stick my neck out and say as its 0 on all the non egt ECU's that setting it to 1 and setting the other bits accordingly, along with adding wiring to the ecu you can add EGT if you wished.
I wonder if is it possible convert a NB into a WB ECU then.
On my car (TT APX) i can log block 217 and shows me egt and afr but been told that's programmed into the ecu.

Sorry, I was or meant to state that I think if you had a non EGT ecu such as the 06a906032Hn or similar which are all Me7.5 then you can add EGT. The APX which is identical to the APY is a Me7.1 which is only 512kb and thus wont have the ability to have EGT coded in. I just checked the 512kb files I have and non of them have CATR listed so it kind of confirms this.

The Egt readings you see on vagcom on the APX are modelled EGTs taken from the lambda probe. Another reason why egt wouldn't function well on the APX is that it's narrow band and doesn't have the control that wide band does, the EGT will protect the engine when it reaches it's limit with precise fuel addition to cool the exhaust gas, narrow band isn't refined enough to use EGT to the extent that it was designed.

You are better off just upgrading your loom and ECU to ME7.5. what this does potentially mean though is that the cheaper more common ecu's from the golfs could be coded to have egt enabled and thus be a far cheaper option that buying a specific BAM ecu.

It will need some testing though

Well, what a knackering weekend.

Friday I finished work early so the steering rack could be changed. Luckily I became a bit of a hoarder about 8-9 months ago, and bought an lcr quick rack, which has been sat in the garden ever since, as it came in handy.

For those that don't know, the 2 small metal pipes on the a3 racks (I assume, on the tqs for sure) stick out towards the passenger side and were obviously rubbing on the downpipe. The lcr ones stick out towards the back and have some additional heat shielding so are a much better design. That is until you drive the car and hear this knocking that only happens when you accelerate. That'd be one of the large metal pipes knocking against the prop shaft that the lcr doesn't have. Some bendage with a large screwdriver and job's a good 'un.

Top mounts were also changed, and the bearings were dead:

Also whipped these in, just need to code them in to stop the flashing immo light:

They make such a difference as they look so much better. They also keep chugging up to 140, but their were others on my private runway so the bottle went before the car did.

Was busy Saturday until early afternoon. Once that was done we started work on the beast, again. Got a new map on from Dan and voila, no more lambda issues, but crazy boost spike if i applied wide open throttle from low down. Let her get to 3k before opening up and it sits about 23-24 psi.

By the time the bumper was mauled I knew that I wouldn't be joining the pub crew at the hotel, so we decided to make the car sound more like a tuned car should. After a chat with Ben about the Karltek, the Scorpion was chopped open. This is all listed above with pics so no real need for more on what we did.

Up ridiculously early on Sunday for AITP. Drove a steady 80ish and because cruise control is amazing, I got this:

8c28f267.jpg

I used about a 1/4 of a tank to do 130miles. Met up with the boys at the hotel then headed back to AITP. Raced Scott off the lights, did a drive by past Karl, went the wrong way and wasted a fair amount of petrol. They all commented how well it goes, and how good the modded exhaust sounds on full go, so I will have to listen to it at some point.

Car got more attention then normal at AITP, but only when the bonnet was open! had a chat with tuffty about a few bits, showed Chris the S2000 filter , had a chat with Cobra88 about mine and his cars as well.

Also took SuperK out in it. Drove like a bit of a tool which is the law when showing a car, but he seemed to enjoy it and commented on how quick it was. It's also made him see he needs a map in his life, which is good.

Averaged 32.5 to the gallon depite all that, so the K04 really was a great upgrade.

Has KVB been set on the map? the DIS will tell porkies else...

<tuffty/>

I couldn't tell you..

How much would the DIS be out by as unless the guage is not right it'd have to be hitting about 35mpg to not use much over 1/4 of a tank. 15 litres = 1/4 so I reckon it used about 18-20.. 4 gallons at 35mpg = 140 miles, so I think it's correct.

Yes it has, all fuelling is straight from a stock s3
I think the crazy boost is either due to a different n75 or possibly an over tensioned actuator, anyhow I adjusted the n75 maps to see, just a question if it made any difference?

Crazy boost? boost spike on spool or just all over crazy? got any plots?

Just crazy as a spike. If I don't go WOT until 3kish, it just hits 24psi and pulls from their, with not a massive amount of tail off.

Dan, I haven't tried the one you sent me last night, but I will try it tonight and see what it does. If not, do you think a new n75?

I occasionally get a little bit of surge in the lower revs though..

Full throttle before 3k? I didn't even know that existed!

It might just be a case of adapting your driving style Reesy, in mine I never give it full throttle before about 3.5-3.8k!

Dad gave it the full whack in 3rd at about 2800 on saturday and I was sure I could hear a bit of surge, but it's never been an issue due to my driving style.

I have already started changing it mate, and it isn't too difficult. As a man who made a very similar change, you can understand the issue as the 3s will spool from very low down..

Im sure tuffty or bill confirm, but with a stock s3 the manifold, exhaust, tip and IC were all quite restrictive. You could request a fair bit of load and it would struggle to get there, n75 would cope well and the boost would tail off towards high rpm as everything struggled to cope. Now with the 3" dp, decat, manifolds fmic and tips everything flows solo much better, requested load is easily met, boost doesn't tail off and n75 struggle a bit more to handle the boost.

Surge is Definately a consideration, spikes are harder to control but more boost can be held for longer. And hence why near 300bhp ( on the dyno lottery) can be achieved.

I think reesy's spikes are just the n75 being slow to react. Easy option is cap it with a MBC. But it can be done with n75 tunning.

Considering what's been achieved thus far I think it's pretty close to being good.

Should be able to reign it in under N75 control with a bit of tweaking of the LDR tables

Been doing that but it's still over shooting as if the n75 is having trouble opening enough and quick enough to halt the boost, the n75 could be faulty but I have adjusted the n75 map in order to see if that helps.

Look at KFPED and KFMIRL/KFMIOP too...

<tuffty/>

Done those, but will look at them again as the kfmirl was quite aggressive which probably may not be such a good idea.

It can definitely be done Dan, I just think it'll take a bit of work, and doing it remotely away from the car can't be easy for you either!

I remember a few years back nobody could map the standard ECU controlled N75 to control a BT of hybrid, but things have changed :)

If Niki managed to control my ko4 hybrid so perfectly all on n75 control I'm sure a ko4 can be done, it might just need a bit more work than normal due to all the additional hardware advances.

Can't wait for a ride in this, I've not been in a 'proper' ko4 car since doing my hybrid conversion, so I'm very keen to see how it is. i think a balls out ko4 car with all the torque will probably be quicker than my conservatively mapped hybrid.

Cheers Nick.. we're upto Version 8 of the map at the moment and i'm sure there will be many more to come. But with each one something new is learnt, its quite staggering how much each engine can vary and hence why a bog standard off the shelf map can only leave your car way off it's potential.

I'm almost postitive I could give chris a sensible 250bhp map, now, and it would run like a dream, but where's the fun in that!

I've seen this car 3 times now and each time the engine has been different, more or less :)

what map name are you adjusting for n75?

KFLDRL is the one I've been adjusting. Even with a sensibly tuned LDRXN it was still overshooting and looking at the logs it was just overshooting before the N75 was able to gain control. It only does it if you floor the throttle on a constant throttle increase it follows LDRXN quite happily. I havent adjusted any of the P.I.D yet as figured it could be a faulty N75 or an over tensioned actuator. So wanted to see if I could get some better control lowering the KFLDRL first.

Originally I had the TQS kfldrl map , but I figured that was on a K03s map and as the actuator is weaker the stronger K04 one might cause an issue, so it's run a stock K04 and a lower value one on the points it was over boosting, But even with a stock S3 KFLDRL map it's still doing it...

I've also tried one of your linear KFPED maps to see if adjusting the throttle made a difference and while i'm sure it did it , it wasn't a cure.

KFLDIMX is stock and KLFDLULS has been increased to stop Limp mode kicking in, as it kept doing that to begin with ( once Im happy I'll adjust that back for the protection)

Let me know when you're free and we can sort something out.

To be fair, the first 5 or 6 were all with the egt issue, so we only have 2 or 3 that are working towards an end result. Not bad to say you haven't been out in the car!

I would not be happy with a 250bhp map as you well know, so the strive for perfection continues. :arco:

The car won't be changing an awful lot for a while noe, so you might actually be able to have a go in it soon.

what have you got the LDRs set to?

Ldrq0s is stock at 2.5

Ldrq1st is stock as well along with kfldrq2

Or do you mean ldrxn?

Peaking @ around 190 dropping to 160 by red line.
From the lOgs I've seen it has no trouble holding actual v requested it just shoots passed the requested before control is gained.

Got the car on the RR last night.

Didn't try Dan's latest map in the end as it was pretty late by the time the car went on.

Ben's S2000 went on first, and got modest figures and torque levels, so although the 'dyno lottery' applies, it wasn't reading above stock power, or even relatively close..

This made me slightly dubious, I have to be honest..

After all the setup, the dyno runs began.

Run 1 = 288.?

Run 2 = 286.?

Run 3 = 289.6bhp

Dyno Graph:

DynoScan.jpg

Proof it was my car, despite being the worst videos ever as the 3gs camera is awful:

And a quick one of the glowing mani

I await a 'Dyno Lottery' pic. For those interested, it's a Dyno Dynamics dyno.

Best I get a dyno day sorted at Bill's soon I reckon... :)

Nice figures for a DD dyno... they run in AWD or pull haldex fuse as the graph looks quite smooth... do any logging while she was on there?

<tuffty/>

**** the bed son :S

290bhp on a DD dyno is some fecking going! That's epic power!

small port head and no WMI? still on a 3 bar FPR?

what figures did Ben's make?

I was more then happy with those numbers, and the fact that they were consistent. Couldn't do a lot more as the car was hot, hot, hot.

Nice results Reesy.. have you taken over fred now..... ;)

110 bhp over standard you must be still smiling.... nice smooth graph to boot...

yeah, he is now telling me all the things that will go wrong just to make himself feel better..

Indeed I am Dave, I also like the fact that you can drive it like an old lady, then flip the switch and drive like a knobhead. The 3s wants to go all the time.

Dan's map is awesome especially as it's all been done blind.

I have heard DD are pretty miserable normally.

Pretty sure it was done in 2wd mode, as it was being a bit spacky in 4wd.

No logging as it didn't get on the rollers until nearly 10pm..
