Taking one for the team: Revo Stage 1 Case Study on S3 8P3 (MY2012)

The more I read about DSG the more I'm tempted for my next car (3 years+ :S)

To be honest, they had me as soon as I realised there was a "Sport mode"

DSG for me prob never go back to a manual now, I love the way you go into a roundabout pretty nr limit hit the apex and just floor it on the way it, by time you hit the bend on the way out just paddle next gear, it is instant and still putting power down. It is like a go kart for me

A few times some big RWD motors following me, and tried to keep up, and they ended up on the wrong side of the road on the out of the roundabout, dam lucky nothing was coming the other way

I continue to watch this with interest. I'm up to 2k miles now (no mods) and would say that the engine feels to rev more freely than it did.
Regarding manual/dsg I have the manual as I want to drive the car myself and feel like I have some kind of connection. Autos however good in my experience take away from that. I have no doubt that the dsg is quicker/better than me at gear changes. It is about the driving experience as well as the speed for me. Add to that the fact that in 10 years I think most cars will be auto by default due to emission regulations (autos generally greener) and I figured it might be one of my last chances to get a manual.

2,000 MILE UPDATE

Finally nailed 2,000 miles with Revo Stage 1 in place (3,700 miles on the car).

The car is now back with Revo and there have been no faults with the car at all. No misfires, no hesitations, nothing other than what you'd expect from a remapped car. I've tried the boost at 6,7,8 and 9 and there have been no negative side effects on any of the settings.

Fuel economy (mix of 40% around town 60% motorway driving) has weighed in at 28.1mpg over the 2,000 miles but I have to say it could have been so much more if I'dd been a touch more restrained. I've not really run the car hard as I just don't tend to anymore, but I set out on a mission to use this as a test exercise and as far as I can tell it's as good as can be expected.

To conclude this trial (and get an independent perspective as to how things are running), I've now dropped the car off with Revo and they will now run the car for a few days to check that it is running as should be expected according to logs settings rather than my personal assumptions! It's all very well me guessing things are OK, butI've never been able to do any data logging on my own.

I would like to add for the record that very recently I've taken one of our forum members out in the car for a test run so I've got a non Revo independent view, and whilst it gave him the opportunity to see what Revo code was like, it gives me another independent qualification that the car is going like stink should I be challenged that the only people who have been involved in this are me / Revo.

The forum member was Matt (Red Deja Vu), and I'm more than happy for him to post his viewpoint here as to whether he thought the car felt OK / was running properly / has any criticisms of the way the car behaved etc.

I believe that is pretty much all I can do, and should there be any further findings from Revo I will post them here.

In the meantime, so that all you limey b@st@rds can get the info I will be driving this:

Actually I can't moan, it's loaded, and the TDi fuel gauge didn't move between Northants and Berkshire (the S3 gauge moves in 20 miles if I'm lucky, 11 if I'm trying!). The mapped S4 has a stone through the rad so wasn't on offer :sign_unfair:

Stone through the rad my hairy A_se !! Revo were worried you would take the S4 off on an extensive Warren S3 type review :) !!

The update is much appreciated and await to hear if Revo are in agreement with your Dyno bum findings. Mine has been mapped 1.5 weeks now and stage 1 really is worth going for, I'm running boost 9 and find the car really easy to live with with so much more go than standard.

Any plans on lowering the Polo or changing the wheels for the week you have it ?

:undwech:And Kev's been a passenger with me!! The hire car XS was £750 and he paid a premium so my 10yrs NCB and clean license didn't win his confidence either!

I thought it was a Polo from a distance, it's a Golf with cruise, dimming mirrors, double din stero, DAB, Bluetooth, iPod connection, MFSW etc.... I doubt it will move between now and return!

Encouraging feedback Warren.

I might have a S3 SB BE S STronic on the drive in 3 weeks time and will be looking at REVO Stage 1.
Now clutch worries this time :icon_thumright:, hope I like DSG, havent tried it yet.

Havent ruled out Shark yet, lots of good feedback on this product too, depends on who has a good offer on the software and switch.

cheers
Paul

Good good. See if you can get a test drive in cars with Revo then one with Shark and then decide, but keep in mind locality so if you need aftercare you haven't got to drive a million miles.

To start of I wanted to say thank you to Warren for giving me opportunity to do a test drive in his car. He is very very genuine, extremely kind and nice lad. We had a good time together chatting about cars and else:]. Great experience and great meet up. Thank you Warren and wish I found only your kind of people on my way:].

As a feedback I can say Revo Stage 1 gives massive gains over the stock is far more superior and brutal than I could of thought in the first place. Really transforms the car and offers immense thrill which comes along with extra noise and turbo boost. Absolute a must for any S3. The only downside is not cheap however Revo software seems to be far more precise and effective than competitors despite recent hesitation problems offers bespoke map settings, brilliant SPS unit and great support. Well done Revo.

I have to say the s-tronic is the best thing on my S3, it's epic. I love the fact you can play a tune almost when changing with different throttle positions!

I'm tempted as Shark HQ is 7 miles away, Revo HQ is an hour or so away, BUT, I still dunno. LOL.

Nearly done 3500 miles in my car with the map and I love it so much, can't imagine it any other way. Revo stage 1 btw

RPB I poped in to shark for a chat last week nice guys lots of good talk about their map, will be getting mine done soon!!
Im also in notts,
what colours your car I'll keep an eye out for you.

Getting her back tomorrow, and whilst I've not minded the Golf VI, I have to say it doesn't feel a patch on the Audi. Yes the stereo has more tricks up its sleeve, but other than that.... Probably slightly better turn in than an Audi, but that's it.

Be interested to see what the final findings are, and where we go from here. Sounds like Kev's got some new options to consider for the upgrade path, and I might enquire about a twin oval exit back box.

Please feel free to start a new thread about buying Shark maps, this ones about test case on Revo maps and it's better the two don't get confused ;-)

Should be getting mine 'Sharked' next week, so i'll write something up then.

Thanks for running with the Revo one Warren.....really useful for everyone, and you've set a high standard to follow !!

Replying to threads at 2 a.m !!!!!

Get some sleep man !!.....it's a long drive next week, and the tea and biscuits are here waiting for you :)

Car is back, and Revo found nothing that looked out of the ordinary so it's now a case of play it by ear.

I've done all I can do, so I'll just keep an eye on plugs etc. and see how they roll.

Car feels good at 4,000 miles on the clock lets see how many more miles the plugs do before they cack it!!!

Any future updates will be in seperate threads as they happen, so that concludes our business here; it's been...... emotional.

Thank you and goodbye!

So means its save to go ahead and get mine done now!:racer::icon_thumright:

I tell you, as it frees up with some miles on it it's getting very quick, to the point I'm almost questioning the need for S2+. Off the line now it's like a greased eel, you'll have to pop round at some point and have another try as it's getting better all the time. I know it's not cheap, but in the majority of cases you get what you pay for. Pound per BHP you will notget more performance from any other modification product (e.g. exhaust / filter / fuel pump) on the S3!

Go on Warren....you know you want to !!

Mine needed 5k to free up to its peak. I think a day or so in a std car (or a Golf) :) just makes you realise how quick Stg1 is.

5k seems to be a magic number.

Stage one on the MY12 seems quicker than on MY07, but Revo seem to think the in tank pump delivers better fuel pressure which has meant you can run it richer.

I'm currently trialing new SPS settings, but I'll give more detail on those later once I have more data.

I take it the self employed bit is going well then Paul. Good for you mate.

So far so good mate, the car is on PCP though which fits better with current arrangements :beerchug:

(Sorry for the topic excursion chaps)

Cheers Plezz

Let's hope it continues that way as the aim of this thread is to finally put an end to all those remap bashing threads, and make people realise there is seriously limited bandwidth in the OEM hardware. It's little more than Golf GTi spec in some cases.

What I got sick of was the venom vented towards some of the tuning companies who are just doing their best to give us what we want.

There is an over-bearing passion to knock Revo particularly, and given the high percentage of Revo cars it would always be their cars that were likely to show up first. However since some MTM cars have shown similar issues the 'haters' have backed off and shut the f@@k up which can only be helpful is stopping the systemic torrent of bull**** and conjecture that was starting to flow all too freely.

This thread will be warts and all, nothing hidden, plain, upfront and philosophical!

I am glad to see I am not the only one getting tire of all the REVO doubters and haters. Over on the A4 B8 page there has been a lot of discussion around REVO remaps. I just had my 2.0 TFSI Quattro done and love it. 200 miles or so done and no issues so far. As the original post stated. The car is now how it should have been i the 1st place. Strong in every gear and fantastic mid range torque.....Bye Bye clutch....

11,000 miles: Still no issues (70% motorway / 30% urban driving, B9,T8,F6). Idle solid (hot or cold), pulls consistently to red line. Never flogged the car (no track days), still on original everything.

Hi Warren,

Good to see you around.

Also nice to hear the car is going well.

Hopefully should be a bit more 'present' going forward Alex, had a few months from hell really. All is good in the hood now so onward & upwards.

Talking to Kev about the jump to 2+ today as I think the 12,000 miles S1 test have proved conclusively there are no mapping issues (and I am a genuinely picky b@$t@rd!).

Good to be back!

May be a massively stupid question (sorry to drop this in on this thread, been reading through and thought I'd ask) but are all S3's AWD/quattro?

They (8L & 8P) all run the AWD Haldex system, albeit it in various guises (gen 2 / 4 in S3 8P)

Awesome thanks Warren, dreaming of an S3 this write up just made me want one even more!

On the face of it there are more exciting cars out there, but when I went out to change cars when I traded in my last S3 nothing else had the all round capabilities. You only realise how good it is when you go to change it for something else (esp. if you've modified it). Also offers huge VFM against some of its competitors even within the VAG range.
