Dog bone mount

Hi,

I had problems with tracking etc not getting the car to pull in a straight line, keeps pulling left, at thw weekend I fitted my silicone tip and whilst under the car I thought I would give the dog bone mount a tap with my hand, there was a metal on metal sounds, so I take it that it needs replacing but could this also be was is causing the car to pull left and give it a few handling probs? I am still trying to understand these cars and needing all the advice I can get before having to take to an Audi garage .

Not likely, you'll feel a nakered dogbone when you change gear, it'll knock.

Pulling left/right is likely your rod ends or top mounts, but could be other things, like tyres or shocks etc.
 
As above, it won't affect handling at all, but will make your gear changes feel sloppy and it'll knock when you do so. It needs changing so replace it with a poly bush, you may as well and you'll never need to change it again. Don't fit the yellow one though, fit the red one from the A3/Mk4 Golf Diesel ;) It's a bit softer so you don't get more vibration, but it'll feel like a new car, they really are awesome.

I do get a knocking noise sounds like its coming from under the car around the gear stick area, I changed the top mounts, tbh I do think one of my shocks is knackered, as when I jack the car up one of the shocks drops lower down than the other, is the dog bone mount easy to change yourself?

Absolute piece of urine to change mate, it's not the engine mount you change, it's the rubbers that you change. When the rubbers get old, you MAY have to burn the old ones out with acetylene or a blow torch, but the new poly ones go in with easily with the supplied grease.
 
I was looking at getting the red one the other day, when the car is on the axl stands do I need to support the engine with a trolley jack or anything when I un screw the mount or is it ok to undo and take off with out anything supporting them?
 
The key to changing a dog bone mount and ensuring it doesn't vibrate is to not tighten it up more than it should be, if you tighten them up too much then you will preload the bush and it won't offer the same damping characteristics as what it was designed for and you will get the vibration that so many people complain about.

But as said above, it's a really easy job to do and well worth doing for the sake of £15.
 
No it's fine to take off without support, all it's for is latteral (front to rear) movement of your engine, it has 3 mounts, the two engine mounts that mount the engine to the chassis, and one dog bone to stop it rocking. So you'll be fine :)

Have a look at the picture there, that's what it looks like and you can see where it bolts on, was easer than trying to explain it lol
 
Ok well I might as well get one, where is the best place to get them from? I've only seen them on eBay

Well that link I showed you was the one I got and is the cheapest on the net IIRC...

It'll only be pence if it is any different anyway ;)

Soo easy to change, done mine the other week. I fitted the yellow one and honestly isn't as bad as what people make it to be.
 
Little towards the pulling left and not driven straight i had that little when i first brought my motor and it was a seized caliper on the rear might be worth checking.

im a yellow man two lol!! ive got no complaints, you know you havnt got a sloppy rubber bush but its not as bad as people make out IMO

+1 for yellow I haven't noticed any increase in vibration think it is all down to getting the torque correct.
 
I got a red one coming this week, tbh I think the vibration issue is a bit erelivent when the cars have been lowered as you feel very ****** bump in the roads that got right through the car, but this is my ipinion.
 
The vibration people talk about is on idle revs, some people have had it so bad it rattles the dash and steering wheel whilst sitting at traffic lights. Its fecking horrible if you experience it actually, it's like sitting in an old diesel Transit van.

lol! i bet you can make a nice pinacolater on the dash thou!! i wish my audi was a reliable as an old transit thou
