2.0 TDI oil pump / balance shaft failure?

Hi had my audi a4 tdi 140 two years now completed services at said intervals was booked in next week for cambelt and full service. But to my look car juddered to a hault and will start but clouds of smoke and wont rev. At the time no warning lights at all but after re -starting and all the smoke the engine warning light came on so switched straight off. Havnt had it checked but at first it was the fault that the 170 b7's have but then saw this topic. Now worried about either as there both 1500 plus this sounds even worse though. Contacted audi who say there are no faults showing for my vehicle.
What i want to know is if people have experienced this fault on a regular occasion then why have audi not addmitted to a design fault? Also ifthere is anything i could do to help the cause of getting them to get there hand in there pockets?

Cheers Brent

Afer having exchanged six letter with the Audi UK CEO on this matter I have now given up and will never buy an Audi ( or anything VAG or VAG related ) again and thats after some 20 years of owning them !

Excellent result and I am very pleased for you.
For most of us however we are now past the six year mark and so my argument for there being a latent design defect has in effect expired ( so my legal source advised ).

Hi - New poster so please be kind!
i am seeking clarity on this issue as there is lots or information spread about on lots of pages.

I am looking at buying a 2006 2.0 Tdi convertible with a BPW engine. I have been to my Audi dealer and they tell me the car is fitted with the chain drive oil pump and there has been no warranty work on this.

However from the post's it appears only BLB engines are affected.
To be clear, is it true to say that all engines with chain drive will at some point have a problem?
In other words i should avoid these like the plague and only go for a car that has either from new or by conversion - chain drive.

Your thoughts great appreciated

Welcome to ASN! We aren't the sort to tear strips of you so don't worry :)

There are two sides to this, firstly any of the 2.0TDI's that rely on a chain with a plastic pre-tensioner are highly likely to have the problem where the plastic snaps and thus a potentially disastrous repair bill will ensue.

The second problem is one that affects all the B7 2.0TDI's and, possibly, the petrols. This is the oil shaft itself becomes rounded and then fails. Noone is sure whether the most recent part available fixes this problem.

I had my BLB converted to the gear driven type but I know it still potentially has a problem but I don't expect it to be a problem while I have the car.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Wrath - much clearer now.
Seems the only way to buy a 2.0tdi with any confidence is to find one that has recently had the repair done. Or stump up the £1200 my local indy wants to charge for the conversion. (BTW they also advise staying away from cars with the chain drive)
As a long term BMW owner i am suprised and horified of the reliability issues over the fence at Audi and their attitude to rectifying the situation. This Really puts me off buying an Audi.
Shame as the A4 convertible is such a nice car :-(

Hi All,

I have the BRE engine and it has failed at 105k (Full Audi Service) too...
I'm still in talks with Audi to see what their 'goodwill' means...
I am weaned off audi now!!!
I just want this issue fixed so that I can move on...

2006 A6 2.0TDi BLB engined driver here, 84,500 failure and I just turned the key from cold. Got a warranty through warranty direct specifically to protect against this happening and consequential loss. Policy sold to me 6 months ago when I specifically went through this scenario happening and was assured the engine and consequential damage would be repaired. Guess what.... they have declined the claim. Here we go... Car is currently at a Halford Autocentre.

PS. Sorry first post and its not a hello :haudrauf:

mines on the ramp tomorrow for couple days as i bought a damaged car which cracked sump and broken engine mounts

all we are going to do is whip off the oil pump once sumps off and examin the hex shaft, aparantly the better bodge is to use a 10mm allen key just cut it down to size and off you go!! stronger than the feeble vag one, thats exactly what mines getting anyway

I admire your optimism ..................
What if its a chain driven oil pump and the chain has failed , whats your cheap fix then ?

The chain will never ever snap on my car because it hasn't got one :)

Hi if there is anybody out there. we have same problem. oil pump failure caused by that hexagonal draft that has been mentioned causing damage to the turbo! 4000 repairs worth. this is a BRE engine in an A6 sept 2007 model.

With all these threads wondering if anybody has actually pursued legal action? and what is the post warranty claim did anybody get anywhere with that after settling with the good will agreement?
thanks. sam

are you a mechanic? have the problem with the pump also. how easy is it to find somebody that can do what you are doing?

well with mine the hex shaft on inspection wasnt too bad slightly more worn on one side, it was just a case of oh thats ok ill just turn the shaft around so thasts what happened atleast i have piece of mind now nowing this issue isnt going to appear any time soon. i would even bet in 50000 miles if i strip it it will still be ok

I'm a a4 2.0 tdi 2006 owner with the BRE engine code . My Oil pump failed due to the hexagonal shaft rounding off . Causing turbo to blow . So I suppose mine was gonn go at some stage with 158,000 ish miles

I have 05 plate a4 2.0tdi (140), my car sounds like a tractor :/ i took it in to birmingham audi service centre and one of the blokes said its possibly due to my "pully" and quoted me £300 for parts and labour, im confused :s

do you guys think its this oil pump or pully?

oh and when i turn the wheel in idle side to side (not full lock) the engine makes a sqweeking noise
Sounds like they quoted you on the aircon pump.
Mine is noisy but aircon still works ok.
Tried running the engine without the auxiliary belt on and the noise goes away.
Noise goes away if I turn the aircon on too.

common, worn rubber doofers within the aircon pump pulley.

Morning guys, I was looking at getting a 2005 Audi estate but now have big concerns about getting one reading this thread. Would some one be kind enough to explain which models and years this effects and does it effect the 1.9 tdi. Is there anyway of finding out if the work has been carried out on a car before I buy? Really would like one of these cars but don't want a massive bill a few months down the line. Thanks guys

You should really take the time to read this thread in its entirety , it's well worth it ...............
However, because I am kind hearted here are a few bullet points to note;
  • Avoid the BLB coded engines unless you have receipted proof the conversion work from a chain driven to geared driven pump has been completed. This engine was in the 2005 models and some 2006 models ( and in the A6)
  • Remember, even the geared pumps found in the post 2005 engines can fail.
  • To be safe get a 1.9tdi or a 3.0tdi ( if you can afford it).

I have a late 2008 140 TDI....one of the last B7 chassis car's. Does this problem affect these engines in the same way?

I know they have a slightly different arrangement.

Thanks

Ian

Your engine has a geared driven pump as standard so you don't have to worry about having it converted from the chain driven unit.
That said, yours has the same hex shaft balance shaft /oil pump drive which CAN, some will say WILL eventually round off causing loss of drive to the oil pump and all the troubles associated with lack of oil pressure.

In that case can I simply change the assembly for a new one to prevent this from happening?

I have a good mechanic so is it an expensive for the parts to change this assembly and what's involved?

My main dealer said they don't see any issues on the later cars!!! ggrrr!!

from what i understand the part along costs 700 plus vat and it a good days work in a garage... not cheep, while u are there u might as well change the waterpump and toothed belt as these all have to come out and most of the cost for this is getting to these parts. On top of that it is advisable to change a few other bits while u have access to that area such as crank gear, all in all from a reputable garage that is poster on another forum i was quotes the bad side of two grand to be completely safe. Oh the new balancer shaft unit that was updated in 2010 has a 100mm hex instead of 74mm but is still a crap fit, at least it has twice the contact surface area into the balancer which should make it last a lot longer. its all hear if u fancy an hours read.

cheers

Thanks Matt

Don't think it will be a keeper then based on that.....car aint that great to invest that sort of dosh.

May consider a 3.o tdi next time or go back to a reliable 320d sport with 177 or 184 powerplant.

Main dealer reckons the early car's are worse although this problem doesn't seem to plague every car across the VAG range with this engine??? Would be a recall issue if it were that bad I suppose.

i have had a diagnosis job on this car with boost problems, when taking it for a test drive under normal driving the turbo packed up.
according to my local turbo recon company that stripped the turbo down to diagnose the fault said that the bearing had grabbed the spindle causing it to fail. the cause of this can be oil starvation.
the car has always been maintained at audi never has had any engine work or turbo work,
no lights came up on dash and the engine wasn't making any rattling noises when the turbo went i switched off the engine straight away within a second or 2.
i thought i would share this with you guys as its done quite a few miles on the original pump now i will be stripping it down and putting the upgraded pump in.
where is it best to buy them from the main dealer or these chaps off ebay reconditioning them?

there is a company over here in northern ireland that say they can mod the old chain drivin one to a new geared one. They say it will fit straight in. I can remember the name they have been named in this thread. I'M going to be getting mine done with in the next week or so.

The company is called Powermax and they advertise there products on their own website and on ebay.
They have put together a like for like replacement kit for BLB engines.

yes mate thats them you dont need to change the sump i have to give them my old unit and they will put the gear's in it then i fit it back in.

so will it be best to sort the timing chain too while im that far down. Would there be anything else that i should probley do while im at it

warth mate will this sort out the plastic on the timing chain or is that another problem that i will need to deal with..

The plastic tensioner is on the oil pump shaft assembly, not the timing belt. I don't know about this company so cannot comment on exactly what they do and whether it stands the test of time.

no problem mate when i get the unit of them i will post up some picture's

Just a quick one, is the part number for the sump stamped on the outside?, as surely this would be a quick sure fire way of telling if the engine has been fitted with the geared pump since the sump is different to the chain driven one.

Does anyone know if the oil pump off a VW is the same as the Audi 2.0? I can get geared pump cheap but its part number is 03G 103 537 B which cross references as a VW part number from what I can gather

Just found out that the part number 03G103537B is off a 2006 A6 with a BRE engine, will this fit a BLB engine and will this one be the latest module with the modified hex key?

These were the MAIN parts used inconverting my BLB to a geared unit. The prices are from December 2011 and are for the latest design;

V03G 103 295 AL 041666/Housing at £769.30p

V03G 198 119 Repair Kit at £154

V03G 103 603h Oil Pan at £92.01p

V03G 103 212D Gear at £31.60p

Hi all, I've just bought a 2006 A4 Avant S-Line, registered (April '06) engine no. starts BRE.

It's done over 80k but been well serviced and judging by the condition it's been well looked after too and not driven hard (elderly owner).

From wading though the numerous and seemingly very well researched posts on here it seems that my car will have the spur gear driven oil pump but may be susceptible to balance shaft wear (output shaft - hex drive right?)?

Can anyone clarify this? I'm wiling to spend 'some' money on preventative maintenance but don't want to be spending thousands :S.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Paul
