Just run out of diesel :(

My B7 3.0tdi cab just run out of diesel with 10 miles showing on the DIS, any ideas what can be wrong, I'm sure my old 2.0tdi always used to have a few litres left when the DIS showed 0?

Computers are only as good as the information supplied to them, personally I dont drain the tank as it will pick up all the crap in the bottom and once air is in the system it can cause all sorts of problems. Why let it run so low? Imho you are asking for trouble and sooner or later you hp pump could fail, add fuel in good time and dont trust the DIS, its only a guide after all, hope this helps?

It was just diesel as once I added some it started (after the air bleed through.

You just run out of diesel, don't take the DIS as gospel use your noggin' and your fuel gauge lol.
