Yeah, forget it. Unless it's had a the oil balancer shaft changed to a gear driven one (I doubt it) then run away. To be honest, even if it's been done I would ask who did the work.
From 2k upwards but if it blows then it's a new engine and turbo. I really wouldn't go for it. Go for a 56 plate onwards if you have to (although they still have problems just not as twofold as the 05 ones) or go for a 1.9.

So probably about 700 in parts? The car is cheap enough to buy and do the work if it all checks out ok! We do our own work on cars too so labour is not an issue

The price I paid was at Audi Teesside in December 2011 and included a 20% discount off parts and 50% off labour.
I also had the water pump and timing belt replaced in the same bill.
Cost for the Balance Shaft/oil Pump assy was circa £1100 alone.
I too have been looking at changing from my B6 to a B7
Looking to change to an Avant and thought of getting something newer than my 53 plate
I hear/read the balance shaft is a problem right up to 2008 if im not wrong
Not too many of the 1.9 kicking around either
