Oh what a day "e by gum".

So, me and our lass fell out, I developed migrane and toothache and ........! So to try and solve my pain and take my mind off things I thought I would try something on the old motor pap pap.

I had been told you can flash the ecu via laptop and FTDI cable so I enquired and ended up getting the software. After a little bit of a cold start with the software I got to grips with it and proceeded to read my ecu's flash memory.

Whoo hoo it did it! So now I have this small .bin file on my laptop, been really carefull with the laptop I proceeded to send the file to my desktop ready for e-mailing.

I sent the e-mail to a very reputable person (can't name any names) and within half hour received a file back.

I was sooooooo excited, toothache gone, migrane gone I felt fantastic! I was quite possibly less than half hour from having a 200bhp car!

So goes to the car with laptop, .bin file and cable. Got all connected up ready for launch, read the cautions bla bla bla and hit the "write to ecu button!".

Connecting..........
Connected...........
Security granted..........
Bla Bla Bla............
Starting to transfer.........

At this point I felt rather smug and then.........

Communication error!

Never mind i thought, least I tried. So I shut everything taken everything in, went back out to start the car and............ computer sez noooooo. (smugness wore off to say the least)

At this point, migrane started again, toothache started and our ****** off lass comes home and starts. I have no cash and with everything else my head was about to explode lol.

I contacted the guy who sorted me out in the first place and after trying various things and lots of e-mails (good ones), in the end I was told to send the ecu to him and he would sort it.

So I started to get to the ecu, what a pig of a job, just for an ecu, talk about silly places to put it!

Now my ecu is safely packed up ready to send tommorow and hopefully I should have it back on saturday with a new map on it.

Wow haven't I gone on?

Thanks to the member (who would like remain Anonymous) for helping me out, you have been a superstar!

Anyway hows your day been?

Dont know much about car ecus, but imagine it's much like flashing a bios on a pc? If it goes down mid way through your pretty much ****ed... If you can work out which chip stores the stuff you should be able to re-solder a replacement on(if you can find one), or pull the chip/ecu off and send it away to some gurus... Dont think your on a new ecu tho mate.

A painfull tooth can be fixed with a replacement, as can the lass:beerchug:

Similar to bios, The ecu has a boot loader so if you do ****** up whats stored in flash it can be recoverable. Like a mobile phone and doing a hard reset. I'm sending it to someone who can access it on a bench via the bootloader and re flash the map on to it.

As for the tooh your right, as for our lass thats a different story lol.

Oh. I thought it may have been a older ECU which cannot be remapped and only chipped.

I don't know whats went wrong tbh
I personally think it's the FTDI chip in the cable, it's a lesson lernt though and the best way to learn.

There's places about where you can buy before you try....

I know that one well ,I used to drive female "escorts" about to there clients I was a good boy lol, some of the storys though made me laugh!

Gallatto flash tool works for me... if you have a failed flash then it can be recovered using boot mode...

You also need to make sure that you turn all electrical stuff off so radio, aircon etc and plug a stable 12v supply like a charger onto the battery... if there is a dip in voltage (due to opening a dor or something) or the battery voltage is just too low this can cause the flash to fail....

Yeah thats the way it's getting recovered apparently, funny you mention electrical stuff as I opened the window roughley the same time which never crossed my mind.

Well installed the ecu, started the car (yup it started!) then took it on a small 2 mile test (not to kick it's head in). I cannot describe how different the car is, coming out of the 1st corner was in second, give a little gas and boom! I actually felt the turbo do its job! puched in to seat and wheels spun and what a growl tshhh and spool!

Many times I have been told it will transform the car and it does.

My plan now is to drive the car as close to normal as I can with a little kick hear and there just to make sure no noises, lights, faults etc appear for a couple of months and hopefully have a job so if anything does show it's self Ill be in a position to do something about it.

Then I'll do another vagcom power run and compare it to the one I did the other week, should be interesting.

Totally new experience, when the turbo kicked in at one point it actually scared me(go on laugh lol) but that scared feelin was sooo goood lol.

Oh and our lass noticed when I got back, She said what you grinning at ha ha
