thermostat help, hertfordshire

hi all, I need to change my thermostat on my 1.8 t. trouble is, i am a noob other than basic servicing and dont know where to start, ive read the haynes manual and it seems like a simple enough job, but i dont feel confident enough to hack about under the bonnet alone. in short, if anyone could spare some time on a sunday to take me through the job, i will happily compensate for time/travel. I was thinking of getting the parts needed 2moro.

PS ..local dealer quoted me 185 plus vat all fitted, and i think i would be a fool to pay this.

I would have offered my services 2 months ago as I was living in ware. I'm now in Cambridgeshire so too far away.

It is a fairly simple job but it is very fiddly and annoying. It's definitely not worth paying £185 when the thermostat and the o ring only comes to about £10!

Good luck though mate.

Did you say that yours was doing what mine is dude? Fluctuating?

My mechanic says my thermostat is okay, but I'm really not sure.

I thought about getting a Haynes manual and tackling it - perhaps we could do it at the same time and share any problems on here?

yeah mate, drops right down when accelerating hard, and when on the motor way the coolant level goes down to 65/70. had my car serviced today and scanned for fault codes. the mechanic said that it was indeed the thermostat.

where do you live ? we could do both together, with my manual, both our brains and a socket set it could be a success. not if you live on the shetlands though:icon_thumright: lol

ps might be worth checking your coolant temp through the climate control, as was sudgested on your thread by someone else, if you havnt already

Lol, you were bang on it seems. cant see how the garage can justify 185 ? expert vwaudi in waltham cross just for the record. I must say they did a job job on my service how ever, and 150 for a full service aint bad i think.
 
by the way knoxie, thats a good write up, if i cant get any help then thats almost as good as lol. big thanks for looking that up
 
was it a basic service? as it will the that price due to audi doing there fixed service price

i think audi are 149 for basic service

Nah, full service/fluid top up/ fault scan. didnt feel that was too bad as like you say the stealer wanted 149 just for the oil n filter.

its a indy specialist by the way.

i feel bad now for not being able to get over to you :( and im only just around the corner
 
just a quick update for those kind people to give me advice ect. thermostat replaced ! hurrarrrrr lol. now I have a snapped dip stick shaft :banghead: but at least my engine is running normal tempurature, and best of all I learnt something.

yeeaaaahhhhhhhaaaaaaaaa!!!!! well done mate!! what did i say ay??? so glad you decided to do it yourself, and i said be carefull of the dipstick holder, i know cz i snapped mine haha

cheers mate. yeah felt good, but a bit anoyyed i snapped the dipstick thing. owel....3.10 on ebay, free shipping. sorted :rockwoot:

now onto the seemingly never ending task which is car modding lol
 
i dunno if its your thing but there is a car cruise on next sat evening if you fancy it let me know we can hook up before??

can do, i normally meet a few mates either at bp m11 harlow or at the place, but can meet at mine :)

we usually take a slow drive to the location, motorways at 60, keeps everyone together that way :)
