In the quest to get more MPG out of my 3.0 TDI (currently averages 33MPG - 36MPG on a long run going easy) i thought about trying an injector cleaner

Anyone used one?

This one is a 1 bottle per tank, to give an intensive clean:
Halfords | STP Diesel Injector Cleaner 200ml

or the less intensive is this one:
Halfords | Millers Diesel Power Sport 4 500ml

Anyone tried these? Do they do any good?

The millers features a kind of "Octane Boost" as well as cleaning the injectors, but requires it almost every tank.

What do you think?

What diesel do you fill it with? I looked at all these cleaners a while back and concluded I was going to put better diesel in instead as things like BP Ultimate and Shell V Power have cleaners and a higher cetane rating. As it turned out I never got round to trying those two but instead filled up with a few tankfuls of Texaco diesel and what do you know, the MPG is up compared to the Sainsburys diesel it was running on. This is a VW Jetta 2.0TDi so not quite the same thing but thought it might be worth sharing.

+1 for Millers oils diesel power ecomax (used to be called power sport 4). I have a A4 (B7) 2.0 TDI and with BP ultimate diesel i was getting around 55mpg on the motorway, however to save pennies have switched to tesco diesel and add 100ml of Millers to every tank. Now get around 63 mpg on motorway and car seems to run smoother :)

I just bought a tin of BG244 last week for my 3.0 tdi

Archoil AR6400 & BG244 for Diesel | Power Enhancer News

Give me a week and i'll let you know if it's helped. Mine has done 108k miles and is a bit lumpy when cold so thought it could do with a de-coke. If you google BG244 you seem to read nothing but good reviews for it. I bought mine from amazon, about £22 delivered.

Sod all that rubbish, you simply need

300ml of Mobile 1 semi-synthetic Two stroke oil to every full tank.

Watch your MPG and performance increase before your eyes!

The oil mixes with the diesel and helps it burn cleaner and more efficiently, also cleans your injectors and unclogs particle filters.

Been using this in every few tanks for years, best thing i ever did.

It gives me better performance and economy than V-POWER Diesel or any other silly additive.

Most of these additives are simply oil based products anyway.

WARNING- DO NOT USE FULLY SYNTHETIC and dont overfill!

Dazmo: Why the warning..... about using fully synthetic & overfilling.

What can happen in each case?

The BG244 seems a good product and as you said a lot of people think it is good.

Being on 70k miles, will try that and see what happens. thanks for your help.

Just as an update on the BG244, I've used half the tank so far (yes, I know, only half the tank after all this time!), but it seems to have worked its magic on the engine. My car was very lumpy when cold, until it was fully warmed up. This has now gone, in fact it went after the first time I used the BG244 stuff. I can only assume after 108k miles my car was coked up. The car is definately smoother, not sure about mpg yet, I haven't driven it enough to comment on this. And no, I don't work for whoever makes BG244! If anyone has running issues like I did I can recommend spending £22 before going to a garage to get it checked out.

I might also follow Dazmo's suggestion from the next tank on fuel onwards.

I looked at all the reviews of the BG244 stuff and went and bought some, it arrived at the weekend and i filled my tank this morning with it.

Will see what happens, however i am going to start using Shell V-Power or Ultimate as seems to make the car better (will find out)

Also been told not to use the 2 stroke oil if you have a DPF, so i am staying away from that. ( i am cautious)

Going for a long drive this weekend so should empty the tank and fill up.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Wow - sounds like a lot, but maybe just a double shot- can't quite remember.

Opies's price is good too. Halfords sell it for £12.99 or £10.39 if you have their trade card. They did have some twin packs for £17.?? on trade but you'll be lucky to find any as they are often phantom stock.

Well i have run the tank empty on the BG244, then filled with Ultimate....

My first impressions are that the car seems to pick up a little better, but fuel consumption compared to before and after is no different!

During the tank of BG244, the MPG increased slightly, however i think that was the Cetane booster, even changing to Ultimate hasn't increased the economy...

So what next, i am currently getting an average of 32MPG, 34-36MPG on a long motorway run. I have been told that you can get 40+ mpg on a motorway run.

I have changed the:
Glow Plugs,
Airfilter to K&N
BG244
Ultimate (or v-power) fuel

Anyone have any ideas - i will clean the EGR soon?

Just to put it into context, in my 3.0tdi I get closer to 50mpg on a long motorway run, quite easily, even on my daily drive to work its over 42mpg (indicated on the clocks) - mines a manual btw.

Personally i'd be looking at things like the EGR, Maf, thermostat and temperature sender before glow plugs. Assuming normal servicing regime unlikely that the airfilter will make much difference, and fuel, well i run mine on the cheap stuff most of the time, so I would guess better fuel will even improve that!

I get 40-45mpg on a motorway cruise, and around town about 30-35mpg, probably nearer the lower end of those figures.

Are you calculating your mpg via physical amount in the tank or via the trip computer?

If you clean your EGR can you take some photos as you do it - i'm thinking of doing mine but it looks a big job!

Mines a manual too, never seen above 40MPG and i've driven it quite conservatively too.

Checked the MAF (have VCDS) and values are similar.

Calculated it over 1400 miles using tank to tank fill ups.
Reason i changed the glow plugs is that 2 were faulty bringing up error codes.
Also air filter because it was very dirty

Will look at doing the EGR soon, and yeah it looks a pig of a job.

My last journey with an A6 allroad achieved 40 MPG measured brim to brim. That's on a larger automatic quattro with offroad tyres fitted and using Millers at the default dosage. DIS indicated 44 MPG over the same 650 miles. Don't think that's too bad for a 3.0 TDI.

I have a 2006 A4 3.0tdi avant Auto. Average 32-36mpg normal driving (A roads). Upto 42-45mpg on a long motorway run (80ish mph).
Amazed how many mpg some folk are getting... never seen mine above 45mpg EVER!

i'm getting overall average of 30mpg in my a6 avant 3.0 auto, you should be getting more in an a4!

Honestly, all these claims of 40+ mpg, I find very hard to believe. I've owned mine for 4 years and even on the longest journeys I've got high 30's maximum. I've got a mate who works for Audi and he says anything over 32 mpg is good. Honestly though, did you really buy a 3.0 V6 4wd for economy? The amount you're spending to tweak an extra couple of MPG sort of negates any saving.
Just use the power and make yourself smile.

Well on my B7 2.0 TDi i'm getting 700-800 miles on a 70 litre full tank (using odometer) - so this equates to >40 mpg. Its been like this ever since the day it rolled out of the showroom :)

Yeah, that's great for you mate. However, we are talking about 3.0 Tdi's, there's a slight difference.

I have a 3.0tdi auto/tip and on a run earlier i averaged 47.2mpg on the dis. That was over approx 30 miles, A roads and some duel carriageway. Was approx the same on the way home so shows that good mpg is available from the 3.0tdi.

What this guy said!:friends: ,could not agree more with that statement rowdy!!

I find it difficult to drive mine (conservatively) anywhere.

I understand about the MPG and i did buy it for the power and refinement.

However before i chip it, i want to make sure it is running correctly, no point getting a chip to mask a problem.

So the claims about the 40+ mpg on a long run are curious, i managed 36mpg (DIS) on a run (140 miles) and i wasn't given it full whack!

My only concern really is the MAF values i am getting - can someone do a 3rd gear run (if you have VCDS) and post the graph? I know i should be getting more air into the engine, just not sure why not..

I looked at my average for the last 10000 miles and it's 31.9 mpg, that includes a lot of long runs. Forget 40+, it's not realistic at all, no matter what some people claim.

Oh well. I'm still smiling at my measured MPG. The chances of the wind being behind me for both legs of the journey is pretty slim as its an EW stint followed by 200+ miles of M6/M5 so NS.
My B7 A4 has only ever shown the same max 44 MPG on its DIS for the same journey and thats a 2.0 170 quattro Avant.

Guess some of us just have lucky cars that sit at the far right of the normal distribution curve. There are others like my A4 which sit in the middle, and yours sounds like its on the left.

Erm, am I missing something here.......AGAIN, yours is a 2.0 Tdi, we are talking about a 3.0Tdi !!!!! I could compare it to the 1.9 Tdi golf I used to have but it would have about as much relevance.

Re-read it!

That was someone else earlier, and this is just for comparison of an average 2.0 170 TDI yielding a similar MPG to a good performing 3.0 V6 TDI, albeit with 100k miles less than yours on it.

Try doing it with a quote then, because it looks like you are answering my post.

Quote's a bit hit and miss on Android, but yes I was replying to your post about 40 MPG not being possible.

Yes it is possible, and because I found it hard to believe, I measured it more scientifically than the DIS. Just making the point that I've got a "lucky" engine which yields more MPG in a larger bodied automatic running knobbly tyres than a smaller capacity one I have in the same body as yours. It should follow that my 3.0TDI engine would yield even more than 40 in your car ceteris paribus.

Mine is the 2.7 and at 60mph it will do 61mpg, it has been mapped and i can go from Nottingham to Aberdeen and back (870) on a tank if I stay at 55 to 60 mph in cruse, it has more than paid for the remap in fuel savings alone, however I dont use it for commuting anymore as I can use the train and chill out etc but i can assure everyone that it can be done, clarkson did 800+ on tg!

was that from the dis or done properly?

all i know is that my golf was 32mpg at best, and i know i am doing better than that just because i am spending less on fuel a month. but because you have got me thinking, im gonna do it properly, and start calculating for a while, so we can do a proper comparison.

Now flick it to the "#2" DIS average. What does that read? And over how many miles?

Hi there

I live in South Africa and I own a 2006 Q7 with the 3,0 TDi motor

I bought the car when it had 94 000 km (abt 58 000 miles) on the clock and it has now done 140 000 km (abt 86 400 miles). I was never impressed with the fuel consumption, but I reckon I could always drive in a more civilised fashion...

According to the onboard computer, my average fuel consumption is is around 11,1 l/100km (abt 25,4mpg). I feel that the car weighs around 2,5 tonnes, is AWD and it stands fairly high off the ground, so it is more or less acceptable to me.

But I do know someone with an A6 with the same drivetrain and he gets in the region of 40-45 mpg.

On the open-road I manage to stick to the discipline of setting the speed control at a true 80mph, which keeps me out of harm's way with the speed traps - even if only just.

That just as an aside. I am actually looking for your sage advice. The car recently started smoking. I am used to a TDi smoking on heavy accelleration, but my car smokes at idle too.

The workshops I've been to tell me (after a check with the Bosch magical diagnostic machine) have the injectors have to be replaced and the cost ranges from ZAR5500 to ZAR7600 +14% vat. At almost ZAR to the GBP, you're looking at about GBP366 to 507. Each.

That is simply not an option for me at the moment. I understand that this problem is making the engine run richer than it should, but there will be no damage to the engine.

I have also been told that the injectors cannot be cleaned, "because it runs a secondary injection system". What-the-hell-ever that means in human.

As far as fuel is concerned, in South Africa we have 500ppm and 50ppm diesel, the latter being cleaner, having only 50 parts per million of heaven-knows-what - sulphur, lead, anthrax... But there is absolutely no difference between brands, because the fuels all come from the same refinery here.

And I only use the 50ppm. I do believe that diesel is even cleaner in the UK and Europe?

Anyways... I am hoping to get advice about some magic potion that you can add to a tank of fuel that will at least clean the injectors a little bit.

Please tell me I do not hope in vain...

i use the millars stuff. was recommended by a local car tuner and great stuff

I've also been told you can't clean the injectors. They are replace only.

I used the BG244 additive which gave me good results for nearly a year, then my troublesome injector blocked again!
