I am going to test drive both an Audi S4 and an S5 on saturday to see which one i would like, all depended on cost in a few months time. I asked on the S5 section the other day about opinions but didnt get any answers ( i dont know if this is because it is not popular?).

My question here is which one would people suggest and why? I would like an RS4 if im honest but that will cost a little bit more money, is the RS4 worth the extra? Is a S5 coupe better then an S4 saloon? Any opinions are more then welcome.

Thanks.

S4's seem to be marginally faster, 4 doors, 3.0 V6T (They kept the T even though it's supercharged). S5's I believe have a bigger boot, smaller back seat legroom, 4.2 V8 from the B7 S4. (Cabs only had the 3.0, Sportbacks only have the 3.0, 2012 on only have the 3.0).

It depends on your needs. Do you have family (and would you let them i it?!) I'd go for the S5 every day if the week. Such a better looking car and the V8 sounds awesome - but that's just my opinion.

As for mpg, lots of 3.0 drivers are reporting no better mpg than the V8, which is about 23mpg!

If im honest i think i put this in the wrong section! sorry. The S4 im looking at are the 4.2 V8 versions so they are the same size as the S5. I dont have a family im only 22 and after driving a 1.4 Astra SXI i want a speedy car that is practical. I do like the S5 at the minute because its a 2 door but if i get finance i might have the car till i have a family?! Also im a builder so i need room for tools in the boot, is that what an Audi is for lol?? Like i say if i could just sort out the cost of an RS4 that would be my dream!

Oh yes sorry, right. The B6 and B7 S4's are both 4.2, quite similar but there are differences. S5 is quite a bit more than these S4's. But RS4 prices are currently pretty well matched to S5's. Have you thought about a 3.0 TDI (In A4 or A5)? From a 1.4 astra, it will be like a rocket ship and return 40-45mpg.

In terms of overall size: they're the same chassis.... and I think the boot in all of them (S4 Avant / S5 coupé and S5 Sportback) is very nearly the same footprint: the S5's have the hatch, so they're a little heavier with the extra re-inforcing required and have a lower boot volume due to the lower lid, BUT the boot opening is wider, so more practical for a lot of people... If you're using the car for work, SERIOUSLY consider the 3.0TDI... there's more of them about, they won't bend you over a barrel for the insruance premium and it will get 40+mpg even when driven enthusiastically.... rather than 20mpg for the same level of enthusiasm! As mentioned before: the 3.0TDI will blow your mind all you've been driving is a 1.4 Astra... I went from a heavilly modifed Mk3 Golf GTI to the B6 A4, V6 TDI (only 2.5litres) and despite being quattro and weighing about 500kg's more than the Golf, I was stunned at how fast it felt... and it returns better fuel economy: the 3.0TDI is another step up in terms of performance AND better fuel economy.... think about it... or at least test drive it to make sure you've not missed out on a great car.

I'd go with the S5 coupé if it was the 3.0 supercharged... but if the choice is 4.2 V8 versus 3.0TDI and I'm using it for work, I think the fuel economy would kill me, so would have to go with the 3.0TDI...

Why not get an OLD 1.9TDI A6 avant for work.... and then a BMW M3 for the weekends :)

Why not go for an S4 avant? Personally I've always thought the sportiest Audis were estates! But are you talking about the B6 S4 or B7?

Anyway, this is such a revealing truth about the construction industry: a 22 year old builder looking at buying a RS4 and me, a 31 year old Architect, only just scraping enough together to buy a mega-mileage diesel ;)

The S5 has more in common with the RS4 engine wise as they are both FSI, Altho the S5 only has 354bhp. I once did see a S5 in the Audi dealership that had V6T on the side altho from looking at autotrader I think that was only in the cabriolet version.

wouldn't you be better off keeping the astra for work and then have the Audi for fun? if you rock up to a potential client in a big v8 audi they might think you'll be charging too much

I do see where your coming from, i no from a petrol and consumption point of view a 4.2l is just a bit to big, but if im honest i think im being greedy and want the fastest car i can possibly get for my money? And i can assure you when i try to get my Astra moving it really is very slow, love the car but definately need more speed!

As for affording it, i dont get paid mega wages. Ill trade in my Astra, ill be saving for a good few months and ill get the rest on finance! As for insurance it cost as much to get an Audi S4 now as it did to get a 1.2 Corsa when i was 18 and i could afford that then so i can afford it now!

My major worry about the S4, S5 in anything less that a 4.2 litre is, will it get boring? Ive read a few reviews that say after 3months the drive loses imagination, where as in the RS4 it didnt, i dont no if that is one person or a common thought?

so you think you deserve more than a lad who gets his hands dirty every day and does the job as opposed to sitting in a clean office drawing

I'm not sure where you're getting your prices from but Pistonheads has S5s and B7 RS4s starting at mid- to late-teens.

I've heard a few people say the S5s aren't too special, which is a shame because they do look nice.

If you'd rather spend a lot less you can get a B6 or B7 S4 for well under £10k. Different engine to the RS4 and S5 but it has plenty of power and you've still got that V8 soundtrack.

I came from an Impreza WRX and was looking for something more refined but comparable in speed. Audis are so heavy that I needed the 4.2 to get the same power-to-weight ratio. It is a hell of a lot faster than the Impreza from 3rd gear upwards though.

The B7 RS4 is supposed to be an amazing car and owners posting on forums don't seem to mind that it's twice the price of an S4.

Agree with S5 comment, it's more of a cruiser, RS4 is far more of a driver's car.

Can you elaborate on how the S4/S5 engines are different as thought they were the same?

The RS4 used a completely different FSI engine (still 4.2 V8 though) and I believe the S5 has a detuned version of that.

I expect it's all on Wikipedia.

Haha, I was just making a light hearted comment, besides my office is a mess! ;)

I think i undertsand what everybody has said about the S5 i think they are the best looking of the lot and the 2 door does appeal to me rather then a saloon S4 and although they bout have the 4.2l engine and near exact amount of BHP there is something about the S5 that would stop me buying it, is it missing a special spark??

The RS4 would be my dream as i said but insurance cost is to much at the minute until i get a proper quote but i still feel it would be to much, so by process of elimination its the S4 then?

RS5? Even on my huge wages that i seem to get i couldnt afford one of them, wouldnt mind if someone wants to buy me one though!

Just to throw another spanner into the mix, is the any advantages/dis-advantages to F1 style tip-tronic automatic against manual?

...is the any advantages/dis-advantages to F1 style tip-tronic automatic against manual?

Better MPG is about the only advantage (apart from the obvious comfort one). Every time I've read that someone averaged over 30 MPG on a trip, they've had an auto.

Apparently they're okay for change speed but they're not like the modern ones with dual clutch assemblies that can change gear nearly as fast as an F1 car.

Also the autos aren't as fast because they won't rev to the full extent the engine will allow.

sorry to sound so rude here but hes only 22 .... how will he get insured and if he can how much will it cost

im 22 and ive got a B7 S4 avant, only cost me 900
How the hell did you get it that low??? i have just today sorted out my insurance on my 2003 1.8t cab, and i payd 711 quid, and i am 40..(well next week i am)

but back to the topic

as for s4-s5... . why not save a tone of cash, get a 1.8t (red t=190 bhp) a4 cabriolet, like mine, tune it a little. like i did and away you go!! 200+bhp is very easy on a 1.8t, and it duznt cost the earth to do, saves you some fule, and still a shed load faster then a 1.4 astra i can tell you that for sure lol
pluss with the money you save , pass your bike bike test and get an old 600 or somthing, plenty of speed!!!!!

Ive already checked my insurance quote and it will be somewhere near £1500 a year, which will be the same as i paid when i was 18 with a 1.2 corsa and i get paid more now so i no ill be safe, im pretty careful with money!

I wasnt aware being 22 and asking about a nice Audi was cause such problems if im honest lol :lmfao:

im 42 and i only pay 340 for the year fully comp ........ adam i was only wondering what it would cost no harm ment over it

I didnt mean to sound sarcastic in my respose honest! But i can assure you (and so could my girlfriend) im soooo tight when it comes to money i would never buy something without checking if it was do-able. But yes around £1500 for an S4/S5 and i originally thought an Auto was more but turns out not. RS4 is more and so is an S6, around the £2000 mark so thats unfortunately stopping me getting one :3sadwalk:

I no £1500 sounds expensive, and it is haha, but i no i could afford that in monthly re-payments.

1500 whos that with .... thats mega cheap for a car like that make sure you got there quote saved ... watch out to cos you might have to get a tracker and the best alarm on it for them to insure you and that will cost loads ... sorry if i sound checky but it seems cheap or is it me showing my age

I have checked it 3 times and it all comes about the same between £1500 and £1600 for both an S4 and an S5 and also an auto S4! I cant hold them to there prices these are being checked for next year when i change my car but i wanted to look now so i no what to save up for. Im happy with them prices i no i can afford that, now just to pick a car haha!

Unless the insurance company is offering a 0% interest rate (which I've not seen for ages) it's best to pay it off in one go, otherwise that £1500 premium will actually turn out to be £2000 in the end with interest added.

Did you get the test drive of the S4 and S5? Was it a B7 S4? This would be my choice as although the B8 has a more 'engineered' engine, it's just not a V8!

re: the insurance: fact is that they just put you (age, gender*, address, etc) + the car through a profiler and see what sort of risk you are... age obviously ramps it up a bit, but there are certain cars that get picked on for being high risk: often convertibles** and often the more accessible high-ish performance engines like the 1.8T.

There are a lot of strange anomalies: e.g. BMW 323i is lower than a 318i (virtually any comparable spec) and when I was looking at my old E30, a 325i touring (avant) was cheaper than a 316i coupé! And when I was researching E46 BMW's, I even found two nearly identical coupé's: a 328ci and a 330ci and the 330ci was cheaper to insure!

A friend who is over 30 and has had a UK license for about 10 years, but living in London and buying his first car in the UK was looking at buyign something as small as possible (for about £2000 purchase price), reason he wanted something small was purely the insurance costs.... so I told him to shop around and here's some of the quotes he got:

£620 Fiesta 1.4i
£640 Polo 1.4i
£770 BMW 318i SE saloon
£900 Renault Megane coupé 1.6i 16v
£800 Audi A3 1.8T
£670 BMW 323ci coupé Msport.

He got the last one... it's a peach... seems the detuned 2.5 inline 6 in those 323's is really unpopular with the boy racers who either debadge a 318i or want soemthign much bigger to tune up properly....

I really wouldn't be surprised if the risk profile of the average person who buys the V8 S4 is a a lot lower than people who buy 1.8T's...

*I don't think they're allowed to do gender any more though...
** that said, my old Mk3 Golf 2.0 8v was a GTI in every way except it was a convertible, so not badged as such... so some insurers wanted to bend me over the proverbial barrel for driving a 2 litre GTI convertible and others were charging me less than a Golf GTI tin-top!

I no exactly would you mean i have had some of the most confusing insurance quotes since i started looking for new cars!

Renault Megane Cup £900
Audi S3 £1100
Bmw 3 series £1200
Bmw 1 series coupe £1100

All the way up to £2000 for an R24 and an S6! I no there all quite high but i know my limits on how much i can afford. Focus ST and RS were both the same and an S5 was £50 less then an S4

All this leaves me with a major dilemma, do i go slower car and save money or get a dream Audi i can still afford!? All this is getting to hard haha.

The one that I find funniest are the quotes where you have two nearly identical car, in terms of age, spec, price.... but one has a larger engine.... and the larger (more powerful) engine is cheaper. Most obvious example is the expensuve 318i vs a cheaper 323i or the more expensive 328i/325i versus the otherwise identical (but cheaper to insure) 330i.

I no i dont think they know what their doing half the time, the amount they vary is unreal! My dad just brought a 350z and they are cheap on insurance, but because there so cheap younger lads buy them and cant handle them so the more they crash the higher the insurance for the 350z goes lol swings and roundabouts??

Just got a quote for a BMW 335i M sport of £884  really?? 2 quotes under £970!!

insurance is mind blowing at the best of times,
i dont understand it.
i just got the car sorted for next year (well it starts form 1st aug) and i payd £711 all in with protected ncd.
this was the cheapest i could find, the company i am with till it runs out in aug wanted £980 to renew. so i didnt bother with them but then the fun started
direct line wanted £1148???? with a policy from alliance, (dont think so !!)
net pig .co.uk wanted £711 for a beter policy. lower exsess, protected ncd and £1000 contence cover and guess what----it was with the same company -as in aliance?????? WTF. now how dose that work then

I'm 34 and my insurance is 600 business use, I alsolooked into other cars, corsa VXR was 40 more and a b7 rs4 was 60 more, shame I can't afford the rs4 tho, I'm also a builder, but work isn't that good I could get an rs4 lol

you'll like this one :)
escort cossie monty, me 29, 10yrs ncd, 3 points, 21yo gf on it as named driver she had licence 3 months, £532 fully comp lol! she was never allowed to drive it alone!
