18s lowered and stretched tyres why's it handle awful now

Doesn't surprise me.

Last year someone cracked the rear bumper on mine and the unpainted replacement alone was over £800.
 
My Speedos are `stretch fitment`and although my swimming prowess is comprimised, I look rather striking cutting a dash around the Hotel pool.

So I kinda see both sides of the arguement here.:o.k:
 
Using the arguments above then a 225 tyre would provide the same amount of grip on the road on a 8j or 10j rim.

Not at any point has width, diameter or TYRE BRAND been mentioned.

Nor has anyone noticed that even tyre manufacturers have a suggested width for each tyre which is usually + or - 0.5j.

A tyre of the correct size will roll onto its edge when pushing on in corners! a stretched tyre will run on its edge 24\7, where there's less tread depth, when cornering it'll roll onto its sidewall where there's zero tread - big difference.

...I thought the whole topic was about tyre width? + we're talking here about at least 1j, 0.5j isn't exactly stretching it.

Some of you lads argueing about tyre sizes seen to have very little experience of driving with stretch tyres. I can see your point to a certain extent, and having seen some ridiculous stretch, 205 tyres on 10" + wheels I agree. But most of the guys on here who say they are rolling on stretch tyres are talking about 215/35 on 8.5" or 225/35 on 9" wheels, this degree of stretch is perfectly safe.

Ive been running 215s on 9" wheels for a year and I'm sure it wont perform as well as the 'proper' sized tyre, but without that tyre size I simply couldn't fit those wheels. And it doesn't ruin the performance by any means, I can still hammer it round corners in mine and have confidence in my tyres

Sure if you are going to be running a s3 as a track slag then proper sized tyres are required but for day to day driving stretch is fine!

That's what I love about England...everyone is so tolerant of people who choose to be different !!!

If we stick to the manufacturers guidelines for everything, then why are the people complaining running either different stages of tuning from standard or running tuning shops ??

If the manufacturer has developed an engine's software over many years of testing to work at the best levels, then you should all be running the standard engine, suspension and brake set up's, no ??

I don't understand the love of 'stretching' tyres or running ultra low suspension settings, but to be honest people who are that much 'into' their cars are going to be far less risk to me than the guy fitting cheap remoulds and then doing 80mph on the roads, probably with duff brakes and suspension to boot....each to their own!!

I like my car low, I like my Fat 5's, they wont fit on the front with the 'correct' 235 tyre so I run a 215. I don't drive like a tool on public roads, I don't see the problem!

Stretched tyres and uber low look is not something I would have on my own car but, but I do get the `show look`, in a show environment.

For balance, here is Ian making a decent case for the stretch/slam/performance combo. (no corners in sight admittedly)

I absolutely mirror this thought.

Are people retarded or what. You can bend some rules yes with minimal risk, but tires is a whole different league in my opinion... It's a crucial component that keeps you on the road, and deviating from manufacturers specs is pretty stupid. No one gives a crap if it sends only you into a ditch if it does go wrong, but when you're endangering other for something so shallow. If you can't fit the wheels with the correct tires, get smaller wheels you nuggets!
 
But surely you can say the same about lower suspension springs ?

The manufacturer wouldn't condone fitting springs which are stiffer than standard and sit the car lower to the ground, also changing the geometry of the car and giving more chance of you leaving the road if it is particularly bumpy ( and probably fitted for looks for some people ), yet you've done that yourself ???
I'm playing devils advocate here, but to my mind there seems little difference in the two mods ( providing the stretch isn't extreme, or the suspension set ridiculously low ).??

I personally would allow people to change their wheels to snowmobile skis for all I care - it would just add to the comedy..:D but seriously - I dont think stretching the tyres a bit is about to make anyone just randomly crash if they're driving normally.. Sometimes it looks awful IMO, but other times it can look quite nice with the right rimz ;)

At the end of the day part of the appeal of their car to a lot of people is the aesthetics.. IF that's how they like it, then good on 'em:icon_thumright:
 
Remember seeing your car frana3. At the dub show this year outside when is the another show and where I'd love to attend now it's got some mods done to it :). Cheers for the help guys but I'm happy with the handling now I've upped the pressures and I think the stretch just makes the rims look the ******** ! :)
