Stolen 1M CCTV

Hi All. Here's the CCTV footage of my BMW 1M stolen without any keys in 3 minutes! I know this is an Audi forum, but I wouldn't want them to move onto Audi after BMW's so really just bringing it to your attention.

This is a video of a £43,000 BMW 1M Stolen at 3am in 3 minutes. The thiefs accessed the car's OBD port in the footwell by breaking the glass, reaching in and using a device to reprogram a blank key fob. The car was simply then unlocked and pushed off the drive and driven away. BMW don't seem to want to admit they have a problem, even though over 300 cars have been stolen in March 2012 in the West Midlands alone.

That's disgusting on BMW's part as well, can't believe that, just shows you how it's great to have an odb port to change settings and play about but gives thieves a new way of accessing a car! I hope you get it all sorted and I hope the intel criminal crew one day get what they deserve.

You still need a key cut, so I'd be asking: where'd they get a key in the first place? I could understand if the OP said it was low-loaded, but it being driven away means somebody had access to the key or the key code at some point - right?

You can buy they keyfobs uncoded from BMW, but you need your logbook, and they code the car in 5 minutes when you go pick them up!

The only reason that's putting me off buying something flash is car theft! It's ok being insured and all that, but it's hassle and stressful to a certain extent.

I've given up on outright flashy motors, not just because of thefts, but the attitude towards owners is usually one of jealousy\envy ...uncalled for IMO. This is where an slightly under-stated 'Sleeper' has benefits.

Where there is new technology, there is always somebody clever enough to break it, all you can do it your best, e.g. Tracker, bigger gates, guard dog, sniper

Shouldn't be that easy to programme a key though! Bit of a pisstake really.

The simple error of bmw seems to be making the OBD port live before the ignition is on .... you cannot even access the 8Ls port before ignition,
still it was a rare occasion the BMW used its indicators....

Key is not coded. Numbers from Control unit are forced into the key, so when they key is inserted in the slot, the control unit recognises the number which allows it to be started!!

The problem in my eyes isn't the fact that the keys can be coded from the OBD port of that the OBD port is live all the time. Its the fact the alarm doesn't go off when the window is broken. There is a dead spot in that very place the OBD port lives as the sensors can't pick up the intrusion.

All BMW need to do to rectify this is to move the OBD port to somewhere more central in the car, that way the sensors will pick up the movement and will go nuts, thus leading to the thiefs probably legging it. They know there is no problem at the moment as the car doesn't make a noise.

all you have to do is cut the wires to the obd port and they wont be able to take it

Saw this on the news!

If he had parked his other car in front then they would have had a hard time getting it off the drive.

Also a steering lock would have helped and maybe even one of theose drive posts that pops up.

Although after paying £44k you would expect it to be pretty secure!
