So I have owned 8L S3's now for over 3 years, and I have still yet to get one remapped from standard! :(

The time has come finally come to get my first ever remap on any car- and where better than at badger5!!

I have my forge yellow spring ready to go (and a few other parts) and it will be a 400 mile round trip for me as I will be travelling from the oposite side of the country, leaving about 4:30am!

For you guys who have travelled to B5 from London/East part of country, would you recommend going the M4 way or A40? Haven't be round that area early in the morning so not to sure which would be clearer for traffic and if there are any roadworks in place? Google maps says there's 5 mins difference between the 2 routes from mine.

Ohhh- and will anyone else be around B5's Tuesday? Be nice to meet some other S3 owners and say hello :)

Finally guys....what am I to expect? I'm not on about bhp figures.....just in general- does it really transform the car?

Ur car will feel completely different! Like a new motor. I would probably go m4

Shweeet :)

I had a full engine rebuild 2 years ago (for a crazy amount of money inc new turbo and clutch on the invoice) which made it feel new again....I'm interested to know what she's running before the remap! as well.

Cheers....think I will go the M4 way

Good luck with the map mate u will be smiling all the way home lol, just make sure the car hasn't any vagcom issues before u go

Expect plenty of smiles per mile on your way home especially if you take The A road. Much more enjoyable than the motorway and plenty of chances to test overtaking manoeuvres!!

Cheers mate....it will be in the safe hands of Bill who will be fitting a few parts before hand....got her Vagcom'ed the other week and it was all clear apart from an ABS sensor that I have bodged back to fix until Tuesday :) Will get it plugged in again though just to be on the safe side.

Maz- I've got a run with a few friends the next day in Kent...although there won't be much overtaking seeing as though there mostly 911 turbo's and GTR's! lol. So I booked a day off work to go for a spirited drive :yahoo:

even better if you've recently had a fresh engine build with a new turbo and everything mate, that'll stand you in a good position for making decent figures. Have you thought about getting a B5 TIP installed whilst you're at it?

Oh yeah dont expect to have any money between now and pay day - you may find yourself going out with no real destinations, just going for a blast

or isit only me then..............

but seriously, its the best mod ive done. may be worth doing as much mods as you want before the map. like prawny-boy said B5 tip and maybe a JR filter if you havent already got one

I've already got a B5 TIP and cone filter on her mate :)
It sounds pretty loud atm and do wonder if the 007P is on it and not my old Split R (don't worry I have checked ;) lol ) so can only imagine it will be even louder after the re-map! Have a little issue with idling- so picking up a clutch peddle sensor from TPS tomorrow to get chucked on as well for good measures, as I remember a fault code coming up in a previous vagcom read.

Will be getting the heat shield fitted at Bill's as well, as I'm not to confident with taking the TIP of and trimming it down myself.

I don't want to turn this into a 'what bhp will I get thread'....BUT:whistle2: what are decent figures Prawn?

(261bhp+ and I'll be a very happy man :w00t: standard 8P S3 bhp IIRC)

It's not only you fella,
I've been doing that for many years mate, ever since my first car.......

Driving everywhere and anywhere is a hobby of mine and I put money aside from my wages every month to burn through my engine, as and I'm sure many of you do. Some people enjoy golf/sunday league footy/photography/getting wasted etc- I enjoy getting up at that crack of dawn and going for a drive down A/B roads with like minded people....I am often on at least 1 run per month with other petrol heads.....btw where in the SE are you mate?

That's alright,I feel better now lol, you'll be taking a detour round the m25 on a daily basis just for fun once the maps done lol. I'm from bucks but in and out of London most the time.what about you?

im not quite as sexy as prawn, but il answer anyway.
i reckon, with a healthy car (rebuild and all that) and with no engine problems, you will smash 261 with the b5 tip and jetex.
hope you do. good luck

Hahaha...... I appreciate the reply mate, cheers :)
That's good to hear ill get past 261 though, as its an early 210bhp model- so assuming the TIP+cone adds 10 more, I was hoping for 40+ from the map....so to hear ill smash it is nice to read! I know the majority of you owners had the car remapped pretty early on in your ownership but as I've had so many unforeseeable issues with the engine/abs/a driver crashing into me without leaving any details, I just haven't had that spare dosh to spend on it :(

I think CC will the best for it but I'm sure Bill will advise once I'm there.

Paradox1- I'm in the deep south east area of the uk..... near the channel tunnel and ports of Dover. We are spoilt for choice for roads in Kent and east Sussex :)

So after a 4am wake up call and a trek across the country I'm finally at badger 5 with mug of coffee in hand :)

Cant wait to get my car back on the road to feel this extra powerrr! Lol

Ill post my before and after results....I feel like I'm 10 years old on Christmas eve at the moment :D

Funny thing is most of Bill's customers come from far and wide :)

Enjoy your day :D

<tuffty/>

Cheers tuffty.

Well it is pretty hard to find a decent VAG mechanic locally to me that are passionate about cars and give you an honest answer!

If you don't mind me asking, how much roughly did this set you back? It's probly the only mod im really considering (combined with a 007p) on my 1.8tqs, should should imagine it'ld be worth the 3 hour drive up there from what people have been saying about the gains. Im also not massive intrested in bhp figures but would be nice to make it feel like a new motor to take away the niggling feeling of trading in for another car, this may possibly be the first car i've kept for over 18 months

Ahh you should make 261+ from a map and a badger 5 (without any problems)! Some people seem up to 20bhp gains from the b5 alone! Was incredibly happy Witt mine! Still makes me smile 4 weeks on lol!

Well I'm back in Kent and unfortutely no remap! :(

I won't bore you guys with all the issues we encountered but the main reason in me not getting it was because my MAF is only working 60% and the lambda worked when it felt like it! Lol
Bill and Mark did a great job in sorting out a load of other things including an onsite temporary SIA deletion and fast delivery from TPS for a new breather pipe. So cheers guys :)

I was that impressed with the service and knowledge, I booked it in for Saturday 30th June- so expect I'll see you there tuffty? Also saw Welly today- not that I knew it was him until he left! Lol

If anyone lives far away and is thinking twice about visiting Bill then stop thinking and book it in! Well worth the trip across the country IMO! (4 hour trip and 200 miles 1 way)

Lavis- not to sure if your car has a KO4 turbo as the B5 is only designed for them mate. If it has then you can find them on eBay as a kit.

Gops- my dream figure is 265bhp+
over 2 runs today I got 216.9/216.1 with a worn out MAF, so 50 Stallions and I'll be a very happy man :D
My TIP also makes me smile still.....after 2-3 months now! Lol

kinda dissapointing in a way, but good to have your car checked over and made better for the map in the future.
so not a bad outcome at all.

so you did have it on the dyno then?
216 is very good for a standard car with dead maf and lambda, put it that way!

ahh i'll be passing on that one then, will have to get someone else to sort the map instead, pretty sure i got the KO3s

Sorry to hear you had probs today mate... all to common it seems these days... see more than you think (as Bill will have no doubt mentioned lol)

Yep, I'll be there on the 30th

<tuffty/>

Yeah slightly disappointed Karl, Bill did give me the option to get it mapped but explained that I would have to take it easy till the new MAF is fitted. I've got a run tomorrow so that wouldn't be happening! plus I could be losing out on a few bhp if i get it mapped with the MAF the way it is!

The lambda was playing up a little before the dyno, but sorted itself out once the engine heated up so put it on the rollers sharpish! The MAF wasn't throwing up any fault codes but it was clear to bill it was knackered on both runs. Low 100s instead of around 180 IIRC. So I'm happy with 216bhp and 203lbft for the time being. Got a few other things fitted like LCR top mounts and TIP heat shield :)

Lavis- Bill will still map a KO3s, I'd give him a call if I was you and ask him what mods he recommends for the car before you take it too him.

Tuffty- yeah bill explained he has seen every fault possible now with these cars, my issues were slightly different though eg the abs sensor breaking in the weird place and a trial map on the ECU that wasn't something he'd seen before! Her new nickname is the S3 SE model....very special indeed!
I'll see you there then mate- take it you'll have your S3 with ya?

Of course :)

<tuffty/>

Cool- be nice to see another S3 in the flesh-and a stunningly kept one as well.
Your engine bay is spotless....puts mine to shame!

Will you have wrote your custom map by then?

I doubt it, kinda waiting until I have sorted the battery relocation and inlet mani really...

Never enough time :)

ah ideal, cheers mate, definitely worth the journey up there when i know my baby is in good hands. will have to get some cash saved up and crack on with that... time to apply for more overtime!

Ahh sorry to hear mate, but still she she's all sorted then it'll be like a new car! Always wondered what my maf would be like.. 12 years on I think it would be tired... If there's a dyno day one day then that's one thing I'd have checked.

all too common now on these "old" cars is split pipes..
tell tales for those with vagcom or access to it....

is your fuel consumption poor, has it dropped over time?
if you look at block 032 in vagcom are the numbers high.... 25% for example
Start looking for leaks, preferably find someone local with a smoke tester and check it out...
If your car has SAI, does the air pump and pipes look rusty..... chances are the SAI valve itself is leaking, allowing combustion moisture into the pipes, into the pump, which seizes it, and remains as an airleak pre-cat...
If you can do a 3rd gear pull on a safe piece of road, wot, log maf (002 or 003) and see if you get ~170g/s from your 210/225..... Significantly less (like 119g/s) then maf is tired and needs replacing..

almost every car now I smoke test before anything else.. Cars book in for "just" a remap.. but sadly, unless the cars fully functional, it seldom is that straight forward these days. 90% of the time, the owners are oblivious to the cars issues. daft little rubber pipes, rotting and split being the most common cause.

Hi bill, cheers for the time spent yesterday working on my motor, what I hoped would be a 3/4 hour job for you guys turned into an all day thing!

Ill give the car a week or so of cold starting to see if the lambda sensor is still playing up whilst cold- if she still idles all over the place then would it be the pre-cat sensor that needs replacing?

Ive just called GSF to get a price on a Bosch MAF and pre-cat lambda sensor
here are the prices inc VAT for those that want/need to replace them-

Bosch MAF - £73.20 + £30 surcharge/refundable if you give them your old one
Pre-cat Lambda sensor - not in stock so he couldn't confirm if it's Bosch but £69 for that

prices sound right
getting the lambda out (usually seized into downpipe) will be the challenge

swapping maf is simple hose clip job

So here goes attempt number 2 for a stage 1 remap! :)

good luck matey!

Are the new parts fitted? or are you driving to Bill and having Bill fit the parts then map it?

Either way, we're all keen to see how it goes :)

Cheers dani- just up bills now
Getting a light service then new MAF, new lambda probe, forge SAI deletion and remap :)

Ended up managing to get 250 out of the old girl.....but with nearly 60degrees inlet temps I think an inter cooler and dp with sports cat is needed next!

Havent been out in it yet- just watching YouTube vids with bill then the fun drive home should begin! Lol :)
