Morning All

I have just ordered a tuning box from TDI-tuning.co.uk. I went out last night and had a quick nosey around but couldnt seem to locate the plug that i need to install the box. My car is an 2007 A4 2.0 TDI 140. Does anybody know how to fit this ? Pictures or an install guide would be appreciated greatly.

Cheers

Drivers side footwell, right hand side behind dash at about knee height.

Thanks mate but i think you are referring to the OBD port aren't you ? The tuning box i have bought connects up in the engine bay somewhere along the fuel injection system. I have seen a few videos of various engines but none for mine and i cant seem to locate the plug on my engine

Aahhh ok sorry yes was obd port I was referring to . No idea where it ud under the bonnet, good luck in finding it.

On my old Golf GT TDI; 140...... it was located on one end of the cyliner head..... you can't miss it..... it's quite a big diameter elecrtrical plug (approx 50mm dia)

Cheers Mark. Really struggling to find where it connects to on my engine, Thanks for the information pal

should have come with instructions, if not send it back and get a remap or a self tuning box

It hasn't arrived yet, should be here tomorrow. I am just stressing myself out before i have a go at it. Cant find any pictures anywhere of my engine and where it should go.

Oddie, I fitted the TDI Tuning box on my girlfriends VW.. Took a while to locate the plug I needed to unclip but I found their video on YouTube which helped a lot..

YouTube - TDI-Tuning.co.uk - Common Rail Digital Diesel Tuning Box Installation

Her 1.4 TDI now runs like a dream, especially after having a major service done. Good luck!

Hi mate. Thanks for your reply, much appreciated. I have watched that video a few times but that seems to indicate that it is for a Common Rail diesel engine whereas mine is a PD. The box should arrive today so hopefully it should be fairly straight forward

That's cool, Yeah my gf's VW is a PD - and I found the plug near to the dip stick. Not sure it's going to be the same on the Audi though lol..

Have you decided where you'll be mounting the TDI Tuning box in your engine bay?

No not yet, any suggestions ? I hope it arrives today, the suspense is killing me !

lol You'll be aright mate.. The box is about the same size as a non digital HID ballast, so I'm sure there are a few threads on here with people who have had to mount their ballast somewhere in their engine bay!

The kit comes with loads of cable ties.. But I just wedged it right at the top right hand corner of the engine bay behind what I believe is the ECU?

Ok cheers mate, i will have a good look around once it arrives. What did you make of the box ? Have you ever had any issues with it ?

Well I fitted it on a VW Polo 1.4 TDI PD - and it's been on there for around 2 months. Instant increase in power and fuel economy; however it does spew out black smoke a little more than previous - but that could just be because my gf uses the cheapest diesel perhaps?

She's well happy with the box - so far so good! Does come with miles of cable in case you wanted to fit it in a remote area in the engine bay but that's nothing a few of those cable ties couldn't sort!

I'm sure you'll be happy with the result mate. Let us know how it goes.

Just had a phone call from my good lady to tell me that my tuning box has arrived along with a few other goodies ! Roll on 4pm !

Well... fitted the box as soon as i got home. Installation was so easy it was unbelievable, literally took 2 minutes. The toughest part was deciding on where to mount the box. I fitted it and had to dash to football which was only a few minutes up the road. I booted it a few times and to be honest i was probably a little bit disappointed. It definitely felt different but not as much as i expected. I had a golf MK4 115 before this and i had that remapped and the difference was unbelievable ! Maybe i was expecting too much out of the tuning box ? One thing i did notice was i could hear the turbo a lot more when booting it. I could also hear a quite loud whistling noise when booting it, any ideas what this could be ?

I am probably being a little bit unfair judging the box after such a short journey so I am going to go out later on and take it for a proper drive and give it a real good examination. I will update later with my findings.

Just been out again and i am not particularly impressed. The most concerning thing for me was that the turbo sounded really loud and made a really loud whistling noise every time i booted it, never heard that noise before.

I pulled over after half an hour of driving and disconnected the box to revert the car back to standard. The bizarre thing is that it felt almost as quick as it did with the tuning box connected !

Overall i have to say i am really disappointed with the box.

Sorry to hear you've had bad experiences with the box Oddie, As stated it has made a difference with my gf's 1.4 TDI - but that's not to say that it would be as good with every application.

Give the company a buzz or email and report your findings and hopefully they'll replace the unit in case it's defective, and refund you your hard earned cash.

Would that whistling sound be due to the extra boost from the turbo with the box fitted? Hopefully someone more qualified can comment lol..

Turbo loud due to boost leak perhaps? Any excessive exhaust smoke when this happens?

No mate, no smoke at all. To be honest it didnt sound as though there was anything broken or wrong, just concerned me because it doesnt make that noise at all without the tuning box installed. Is it possible that the tuning box will be putting too much strain on the turbo ?

I've you want to get more power out of your car then do it correctly and pay for a half decent remap. This will provide the extra umphh you're looking for.

No I don't think so, if there was an overboost it would go into limp mode. Somethings not right with it, you should be able to feel the difference. I use a tuning box on a 2.5Tdi Touareg (a PD engine) and although it won't set any records it is noticeable and worthwhile.

I appreciate what you are saying and i would agree that a remap will provide better performance than a tuning box but having read various reviews of the TDI-tuning system the general concensus was that this is a very good system and not just a cheap resistor type box which some people (and by the sounds of yourself included) tend to assosciate with a tuning box.

I didn't purchase the box as a cost saving exercise, i purchased it hoping that it would provide extra performance and slightly improved economy as proclaimed by the makers of the box

TBH I think I would give them a ring and say you hardly notice the difference, they are likely to give you a few pointers and if not maybe replace it as faulty.....

Looking at their website, they appear to offer 2 different types. The digital one will have more variables and I doubt it could be fitted in under 5-10 minutes. This suggests to me that you have the cheaper non-digital one which has connectors that could be connected (to what, I don't know) in a couple of minutes.

Am sorry to hear you are not that happy with your plug and play box. When I had my Zafira 1.9cdti I used the "other" UK Box company....begining witha D and the performance from their plug and play box and after sales service was terrific. Even the mpg was much better.... was just a shame that the engine was such crap.....put me of oil burners for life!

Well... i spoke to TDI tuning today with regards to sending the unit back for a refund. The guy i spoke to was very helpful and seemed very knowledgeable. I described my issues that i was having with the box and he said that the box needed adjusting. He told me that on the box there is a little screw hidden behind a rubber bung, remove said bung and adjust accordingly.

I got home earlier and adjusted the box as he instructed and re fitted. Just been out for a blast and i am much more happier with the box now. The power delivery feels a lot smoother, the turbo isn't making that awful whining noise, idle seems to be fine and overall the car seems to feel much better.

Hopefully it will stay that way now, just going to see how it performs over the next few days/weeks.

Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread and especially the people who have had the good will to PM me, really really appreciated

Glad you got a good result in the end. I've heard that there can be some variation between cars with the same engine that make the default settings of these units less effective and therefore in need of tweaking. This is apparently the case with the 170PD engines in particular, although I know yours is a 140 and these are probably less affected.

Whilst a bepoke remap will always yield the best results, they are not transferable or indeed invisible, and there are benefits of both options depending on your atitude to warranty compliance, general usage and intended length of ownership.

If the cap fits - wear it. just remember to keep it under your hat.
