advise before starting a project

basically im going to have around £5000 to spend on my a3 1.8 tq im not too sure where to start.

Thinking between

Doing a engine swap to a bigger engine or sticking with the 1.8 and going for a hybrid build

if i do go for a engine swap i was thinking of a 2.8 twin turbo but with worry's of will it fit in the little a3

hi mate i think you'll need more then 5,000 pounds to be honest, with power you need uprated brakes and suspension bushes etc.. to start off with.

1.8T's are nice engines.. maybe stroke the engine, bigger injector get a gt28 or gt30, and ofc uprated clutch to deal with the higher torque. i think that would be cheaper then putting a R32 3.2 v6 engine in it im assuming and then slapping on a turbo on an engine that originally came without a turbo could be slightly tricky... then you might wanna change your exhast and turbo manifold not an easy job to say the very least.

but all this is presumption you havent stated how much HP your going after at all..and do you want the car as a daily or a track car etc..


personally im currently in the process of building an engine and thats costing me 3 grand... so ...
 
i was thinking about the r32 engine from the golf. But like you said it a non turbo engine as far as i know they never made a turbo model for the r32, I was thinking of the 2.6tt engine that came in the r33 skyline. Been looking around and there is plenty for sell for around the 5k mark the worry i have is the fitting of the engine, I was going to aim for around the 500bhp mark but 1 step at a time 1st would be getting the engine and fitted for the 5000 then scrap together some more cash then do the mods to get the power and ofcouse the ability to stop them houses.

but im still in the thinking prosses and may just go with a hybrid build and stick with the 1.8

mate to be honest the 1.8T engine can get the 500bhp and is better then doing engine transplants messing about with the loom ecu etc.. a big hassle when you could stroke your 1.8 to a 2.0 or 2.1 get a gt30 or gt35 garret turbo 680cc injectors and the sort and you will see the 500bhp mark and a very exciting car, and you can build it progressively.. start with engine stroker kit then maybe exhaust and brakes suspension etc...get ur clutch /gearbox sorted then get your tubro that way your not burning your $$$ one hit. the torque will be laughable too :p

im personally gong that way
 
Have you seen the size of the engines you are talking about? Just go buy a Skyline with your 5k!

What do you want out of the car exactly? if you are making a track/drag car then arguably you can just use the car as a shell and do what you like engine/drive train wise... if you plan to use the car on the road then tbh stick with the 20v...

On the TQ you will need to do the rods and pistons ideally as they are 19mm pins from memory... a decent GT30 setup will net you between 400hp/450hp but going stroker whould help that along... a stroker kit would take up a lot of your budget though...

Large port head, decent inlet, large FMIC, larger injectors, larger MAF, tubular exhaust manifold etc... then custom mapping..

Fitting an engine from another VAG is tricky enough but from another manufacturer then its going to be a fabrication fest...

While they didn't make an R32 turbo, you can turbocharge an R32... but not for 5k...

How you not thought about a k04 hyrbid? would be so rapid with zero lag aswell in a quattro.
I think as tuffty said you need to decied what you want the car to do before you start splashing out.
also be prepared for set backs
 
seems. every one is pointing to the way of a BT or a k04 hybrid. i'm still going to use it as a daily runner.
think i'm going to go with the hybrid build then go from there seems like the smartest choose for now

my oil pump water pump got replaced this year, and useing the JE pistons. waiting on the garage near where i live to get back to me with a estimated labor cost. while the block is out mite as well get the mounts changed as-well
 
things not looking too good right now for the storker kit. Two garages wont fit the kit due to having a lack of expreiance in fitting them cant blame them in not wanting too. if anyone knows a place who would be willing to fit the kit would be much helpful
 
you need to take the car to a tuner or motorsport company that specialises in this type of work. Expecting some random back street garage to be able to do the job in a satisfactory manner is only asking for trouble.

As mentioned above, MAKE SURE you order the rifle drilled rods when ordering the kit.
 
they was both tuning company's. im waiting for a reply on 1 more reply from a motersport company hopefully they can fit it down side its a few 100 miles away
 
A member on here had a similar issue recently where he took his S3 to a local garage to get rods fitted and resulted in his engine needing a rebuild...

Performance parts aren't the same as std stuff (which was the issue wit the above as they didn't understand how to torque ARP rod bolts)

Pity you aren't closer to Glos :)

basicaly on the VAG group on facebook cameron Tarver was selling a relentless manifold, donwpipe and de-cat, i paid money into his account, the next day after payment he has blocked me off facebook and not replying to any of my emails, just waiting for the police to take action now, i have given him the chance to pay me back or send the items but he will not comply.

so be warned, DO NOT BUY ANYTING OFF OF CAMERON TARVER AKA KGNTARVER....

Wow....I think I may have read about that on the VAG FB page tbh....

Shame that - as it's people like him that bring the community down. I'm assuming you paid the money directly into his account rather than PayPal?

Hope you get it sorted- can't be a small amount of dosh for that package
 
cheers mate and its not a huge amount but enough for me to do my best and get it back, i will get the police round his house, i have found his address and i know all his families names, so with any luck il get it back, cheers
