2.0 TDI MPG

Well, I'm almost done with my Audi 2.0 TDI. Had an extended test drive in a BMW 330d today, and was driving far faster than I usually do in the A4, and still got better MPG's. About 40 mpg overall, on lots of different roads.

1 extra litre of capacity, coupled with an extra 68 BHP. And the Beemer was almost fully loaded, with satnav, full leather, and all the other trimmings, okay, it has 4k more on it, but that fine with me. Same per month, just gotta make up a little in the deposit, thats what I get for buying a new car though. Time to change...

What you getting for yours as a trade in? Might see you over on bmwland soon then!

My mates got 2010 3.0 tdi Avant s line with a remap on it. He never got it for economy just the power and the fact the diesel can go through his company so he doesn't drive it to see what economy he can get, infact he never even looks at his display. I had a look the last time i drove it and it was averaging in the 35's and he doesn't really hang around. Maybe quite a lot more expensive but plenty power and decent economy. Heavy car though, his is 265kg heavier than my 2.0 tfsi saloon!

Deal done. Getting rid of the thirsty 177 Quattro and getting into an equally thirsty 284 335d on Monday. At least I'll have more than 100 horses though for the same economy.

I bet you don't!!

I have a friend who has 1 and is lucky to see 30+ mpg.

I had 2 extended test drives, covering my normal routes, at my normal driving times. At my normal speeds. Each time covering in excess of 60 miles, and each time returning in excess of 40 mpg.

I made sure I did proper research this time round. Didn't want to make that mistake again.

I be he does. I had a chipped 335d M sport. If i drove like a granny i could get 50mpg. When driving normally I would average low to mid 40's. The car was chipped and rolling roaded at 364bhp and 700nM torque. It was simply an awsome vehicle and i should never ever have got rid of it. Saying that i am beginning to really like driving the A4 (2.0 TFSi). Not got the punch of the BMW obviously but still great to drive. BMW makes a good diesel engine. Audi do not. IMHO. Petrol wise I think the Audi beats the BMW petrols.

Anyway I would have another 335d, infact its the only car my wife has ever mentioned actually liking. So much so that she wants one for herself.

If fuel economy (cost to run) is your reason for getting rid of the Audi then why change to a BMW (lovely car even though it runs on diesel!) that has a similar mpg and will cost you the same to run each month?

See, now I can totally see your argument there.

Now, if I was to switch to the BMW 320D, for example, there are problems. The new 3 series is not yet released in estate form, which I would definitely want. Thats several months away, and all the time, the depreciation on my A4 would be getting soooo much worse. Secondly, they are releasing their x-drive unit on 3-series shortly after, so more of a wait, and extra depreciation on a car I'm just simply not happy with at all. So waiting on either or both of these things will cost me even more money.

Now, I have recently sold my S4, and am going down to one car, for now. So I can afford to put in the little amount of cash required for the swap.

I can live with the poorer fuel economy (and could do with the A4 too). But I couldn't live with the knowledge that, for the same costs per month, I am loosing out on over 100 BHP. It is, in fact, well documented that if you take it easy in the 335d, that 50 mpg is possible (as rigsuzuki has pointed out above). This is a figure simply not achievable in the 177 A4, as pointed out to me by my local Audi dealership who took it on an "economy" run themselves, and only recorded 40 mpg.

So, if I want to drive like a granny, I can achieve better fuel consumption out of the 335d. But driving like I normally drive, I should see the same, if not marginally better out of the BMW.

Its a no-brainer really. Why would I take all the depreciation on a car that under-performs?

I have to admit xs2man, your posts on here have been very informative and helped me make up my mind when looking for a B8. After reading what you wrote, I opted instead to buy the 2.0 TFSI!

Power corrupts! I think I get your logic and hope you enjoy your beemer, not sure why Audi haven't upped their game with their diesels, mind you the new 3.0 tdi twin turbo jobbie looks like being a great engine and will make the A4 pretty rapid if the fit it into that.

If you look on youtube there is a guy on the autobahn sat in excess of 145mph for some period of time and he is returning mid 20s mpg in his 335d. go to 8.57 mins in . BMW 335d M-Sport flat out on the Autobahn - YouTube

As mentioned in many other posts and on many other forums Audi just Can. Not. Achieve that. Why i dont know but BMW have definitely led the market for some time with deisel performance and economy. Which is strange considering their advances in motorsport particularly Le Mans 24 hour. Their motor sport deisels are superb. Why can they not match this to their road cars. Also the blatant lies of fuel economy by the Audi salesmen is diabolical. Audi make great cars but the deisel IMO is behind the competition and needs brought up to date.

Long term, the beemers aren't that much more economical, my 320d m sport coupe averaged 36mpg with mixed driving, not amazing for a 2.0!

Good news on the mpg front, I just spent the weekend in Newcastle and averaged 50.4 mpg. That was me resetting the computer before I left Aberdeen, bit of every type of driving thrown in there. On the journey down alone I was getting over 52mpg and this is driving over the A1 which is hilly B-class roads.

My old 320d Touring was awesome on fuel, always 600+ miles on a tank!

My new 325d Touring is around the 40MPG mark at the moment, not bad for a 3.0L engine! Well, a hell of a lot better than the crappy Audi 2.0 TDi!

On that note my old car is up forsale again at the dealership (Northampton - Rubbish dealership too!), so anyone researching to buy an Audi A4 Dynamik TDi, the reg is KX61 XYD - Don't buy it, it's a pile of poo!

To be fair I always had at least 100kg of gear in the boot which didn't help but I'd be lucky to see 500 miles from a tank! Over 18k miles it averaged 36mpg, if I can get close to that in the Audi when it comes I'll be happy.

Just don't believe the DIS on the Audi, it's about reading is around 10MPG out! Make sure you track it properly.

Is that from a brim to brim fill? Cos the dis lies!!!

I have tested the DIS previously and my one isn't even 5% out so stil around the 50 m.p.g mark which i thought was good considering.

However 1 thing i did forget to mention previously was the car has an Angel Tuning map and K&N panel filter, don't personally think this makes a difference but i could be wrong.

So that's about 37 mpg? What kind of driving you doing there??
Half Motorway, half B-Road, hardly any traffic, some use of cruise control and sitting at around 70mph. I used Shell V-Power. The DIS did read an average of around 43mpg throughout the journey, and even 64 and 54mpg on occasions (Yes I know the DIS isn't that accurate and I have had the DIS correction on VCDS).
Just got 470miles out of the last tank but that included town driving.

Crickey, I thought I got good readings! I was travelling on company business a few days ago, so stuck to the speed limits and had a relaxing drive. (I tend to travel by train). But anyway after a mixture of motorway, country road and town driving, the DIS (about 10-12% out according to my calcs) gave me a return of 47mpg!]

Of course, my drive home from the office afterwards was a lot more exciting, so it dropped down to about 35-36mpg.

This thread has just made interesting/concerning reading! :uhm:

After lots of thought and considering my options, I've just recently purchased an A4 Avanat TDI 170 in replacement of a very thirsty spec'd up Leon Cupra R. I knew before I parted with my cash that the engines have 'issues' but I did my research and ensured I picked one up that was in good order with all relevant issues already addressed (and anything that hasn't been, I factored in to the money I offered). That said, fuel economy never really came in to the conversation as I rather foolishly just took what I see in different guides as correct (wont be making that mistake again!!!)

To give my view on the whole discusion though, all things considered, I love my new car! Yes I know the engines aren't the greatest diesels out there...yes I know they don't return the best MPG for an coal driven engine (but compared to the 20mpg from my Leon, anything's a bonus!)...but I love the look of it, both inside and out...I love the way it drives...and I love the way it feels...so regardless of the 'issues' with them, I'm happy!

Okay, if I did it all again, I'd probably go for a petrol version of some description to get a bit more punch for my dollar but taking hindsight in to consideration...I'm sure we'd all do a lot of things differently in life!

Cue comments...! :p

Since a service and staying at speed limit this is what i manage to achieve. Th mileage is from full tank and is of two motorway journeys. My motor is a 143 thoughIMG 0345

Well your seeing a decent difference from the previous car, so if your happy, then stick with it, they are nice looking cars.
My experience was the other way, and dealing with Audi in general was just crap, there customer services are rubbish!

But as I said, if your happy, stick with it.

The DIS lies like mad though, use fuelly to track it properly on fillups, but I'm pretty sure a 143 will be pretty good anyway.

This looks to be very similiar to what i get from the 143 (although mine is mapped), i'm currently getting 43ish mpg with mostly town/traffic driving. The DIS can sometimes be inacurate but i checked mine over 2 fill ups and seems to be good +/- 1mpg.

I think the big issue with the A4 mpg issues is more to do with 4wd cars, probably down to weight and constant 4 wheel driving.

Yeah Quattro ones, most of us 143 drivers seem to be getting similar MPG.

My average over 556 miles since getting the car is 40.9 with all short journeys, mixture of town and motorway and a few blasts.
My daily trip to work (on Trip1) is averaging 50.1 as it is mostly Motorway but still only 11 miles.

I go to Liverpool quite a bit with work so that will jump my average even higher.

I am still on track for getting similar/better return from full tank compared to my ST TDCi so I have no complaints at present.

My 2.0 TDi 143 returns 55mpg on my commute to and from work. It's a mixture of Motorway and 60mph roads. I'm happy with what I'm getting from it generally and I'm not a slow driver. The 1.9TiD 150 Saab I had before could get a few more mpgs, but it sounded like a tractor and the build quality was appalling, and it eventually disintegrated.

Ben :)

I just bought Xsman's "old" car from Dundee Audi and on first fill up got 40.5 mpg second fill was 44mpg both were brim to brim.
I'm almost at 500 miles with the 3rd tank and the light isn't on yet.
I'm happy enough with the economy and the car looks great.

I've just bought a DTUK box and hopefully it will arrive tomorrow. I had a similar box on my MG ZT and it made a big difference.
It will be interesting to see how the economy is with the DTUK fitted.

Here's my mpg and a link to my Terraclean thread................

As posted on another site.

Brycie......58.8 mpg is amazing!
I've never ever seen anywhere even neasrly close to that, the best I've ever managed being ultra careful, almost hypermiling, coasting in neutral with AC off, the lot is 52.2mpg.

Funnily enough I managed that again today, albeit briefly before she settled at 51.2mpg on the instant trip ss detaile in my post below....see link

Terraclean anyone??

I managed 750.2 miles on a full tank and refulled to witihin a penny at £104.01 for 70.8 litres of Shell V Power
On the basis that there was 9.2 litres ( 2.03 gallons ) left in reserve and at 51.2mpg that equates to a total possible of 854 mile range

Feul consumption figures for our cars are
33.2mpg urban
60.1mpg extra urban
46.3mpg combined

I seem to have been stuck in the urban territory for far too long, however, I believe with the improvements I've made and some careful driving + the use of Shell V Power I'm back on track.

My fuelly account over 2 fuel ups has jumped from 36.7 mpg to 42.4mpg......thats a 5.7mpg improvement and not to be sniffed at

UPDATETODAY 14.08.2012 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

History first
I used to get decent mileage but then I travelled mostly motorway miles. The best I ever achieved was one day when I had a particularly long run ( approx. 700 miles to cover in one day ) This was with me 6’3” 17 stone + a workmate at 6’7” 19 stone, work gear and a boot crammed full of work related items.
I managed 695 miles covered with 40 approx left in the tank + reserve fuel meant I could have got about 850 miles at the 52.2mpg rate had I run her dry.

Incidentally when I refuelled the DIS told me to expect a 915 mile range if I travelled in the same manner going forward.
915divided by 52.2mpg = 17.6 gallons so it all seems to work out fine!

Recently
My mpg is shot to bits, I travel a mix of city and motorway now, probably 60/40 or thereabouts, maybe even a little more city stop start than that even. The car doesn’t always get up to temp and the instant mpg usually hovers around the mid 30’s range, high 30’s to low 40’s if I’m lucky on motorway jaunts.
The average for the lifetime of the car was recently showing36.6mpg.
Based on the fact I usually get around 500 – 550 to a tank + whatever isleft in reserve it kinda works out about right.

Past week or so
As you may know I recently cleaned my EGR valve, switched to Shell V power and had a Terraclean treatment done on the car. I’ve been monitoring my mpg etc ever since and recently started a fuelly account to help with this. My first fuel up showed 36.7 mpg which is scarily close to the average showing on the DIS in my car.

My second fill up I looked even closer and decided to see what I could get out of her and if the steps I took had any effect. I topped her off with Shell V power and reset the instant trip, but left the lifetime trip meter as is at 36.6mpg

Over the course of the full tank I probably did a mix of 75% motorway and 25% stop start town driving. I was careful, not exactly hypermiling as the boot was still crammed full, the AC was on and the drivers window open slightly as I am a smoker.

I managed to get 750.2 miles on a full tank and this left zero miles in the DIS so I was essentially on reserves at that point.

I refuelled almost exactly the same as the last fill up at £104.01 for 70.80litres of Shell V power diesel. On the basis that my instant mpg had seen 52.2mpg but settled at 51.2mpg and the the fill up showed me that 9.2 litres (2.03 gallons ) remained in reserve, meant if I had run her dry I was looking at an 854 mile range….not bad!

This turnaround in a week or so is impressive, at least for me

From past experience the car’s computer slowly builds mpg when driven sensibly and economically but reduces it drastically when the lead foot appears. 5 years of ownership has taught me once its way down at the kind of levels I mentioned earlier it takes a long time, lots of regular motorway miles and very economic driving to get the upward trend back on track

The only part I don’t understand is the DIS after refuelling showed a DTE of 715 miles?
I was sure this was based on the level of fill x the instant mpg which would have meant approx. 910 mile range NOT the 715 miles as indicated.

Anyhow in the matter of less than a week my mpg isup from 36.6mpg to 42.4 according to my fuelly account,

even though my instant trip on the DIS shows 51.2 and the average for the lifetime of the car is now at 37.1mpg

This shows a huge improvement for me as far as I'm concerned and I further believe that if I can continue the trend and drive enconomically I can achieve even better results.

When I had mine.(2.0 TDI SE.)..Remap went to 215 BHP 316 Torque.

Always ended up getting around 38/39 all types of driving, long runs and short trips up to 10 miles urban.

I run a 143 B8 and get around 47 mpg on the motorway and thats an average drive not a sensible drive. Speeds are around 80-90 but there are a few 50 average speed cameras on the route. The whole trip is about 168 miles. I normally get 500 miles to the red line.

Jenkobenko - 500 miles to the red line gives you around 41mpg.

So about me - disappointed like most of the owners here (in regards to economy). Dealers claims were something like - 40mpg urban/48 average/60 extra urban. Well, my average is about 40-41 mpg. Most of the long journeys - 45-46mpg. Once got 53mpg but it wasn't pleasant drive.
Mine is S-Line 2.0 TDI with multitronic (CVT) FN12 reg with 12k on the clock (well, was 2 weeks ago when I've took it from the dealer). Unfortunately for me - this is my company car so can't exchange it or tune it in any way :(

Apart of bad economy - it makes smile on my face every time when I am driving it :)

The temperature makes a big difference with diesel in my car. It is definitely more economical when the temperature is up. Been baltic and pishing rain in Scotland for the last 6 months so wait and see once we break 10 degrees up here.
