Hi,
Im going to buy an A3 within the next month or so and i need some help, if that's ok.
I want to buy the engines with the non PD fuel systems, i have been told that only the 90hp and 110hp models are the non-PD ones, is this true please?
Thank you in advance- B

Thanks for that.
I thought that they then end at 2003?

Hi buel
90 & 110 up to 2002 (mine is a Y facelift 110 SE) are VE with a 5 speed box
105
115
130 are all PD 130 has a 6 speed box but same diff as VE so no benefit really apart from bling value.

stick with the 110 ASV engine if you want to tune it as the pistons are top spec with oil jets
the 90 ALH is pretty much the same but has smaller injector nozzles and no fancy pistons and no oil jets.

Hi Cobra,
Thanks for that, that helps me a lot. Please can i show my naivity and ask what 'VE' is?
Regarding modifying an older model, please can i copy and paste a bit from an earlier thread that i started:

And it gave me an idea that perhaps i could buy a 99-2002 model and upgrade the grill, bumber etc and maybe more? (If i was to buy a 99-00 for around £3500 then i wouldn't mind paying £700-£1000 extra to mod it)

Please can i have some advice as to whether this could work and if it would look newer or simply an old car trying to look newer, if you see what i mean.

Anyway, i look forward to any replies on this, thanks.

for that sort of money i would be looking for a very low mileage mint condition facelift model. i bought a 2001 (y) tdi 110 in vgc for £1500 last year, high mileage though. out of interest why do you want to avoid the pd engine? i had a golf pd130 i sold it with 192000 miles and it ran perfectly. personally i think the pd engine is far better. also bearing in mind your budget you could easily get a mint one and have plenty left over to replace anything that went wrong

Hi egedford,
To better explain myself, here is the link to my other thread.

Please take a look if you can?

Hi Buel

VE refers to the VE Bosch Fuel pump
(old fashioned external Diesel Pump)

Like egesford says the PD engines are probably better and still capable of running on Veg
I know 2 people who run Veg in their PD engines a pd100 and a pd115.

If i knew about the pd engines when i bought my A3 i would not have bought a 110 VE as it has less tuning ability
but now i have it i don't mind.

Hi Cobra,Thanks for that. Well it's just that i've been advised on the veg oil forum that PD engines may well run on veg for a while but will, sooner rather than later, give up the ghost. Those guys generally seem to know their onions too. Please could i ask you to ask the guys you know who run veg on PDs for their contact details as id love to ask them if they have twin tanked/modified theirs?

Please can i ask if anyone else knows of anyone running PD engines on veg oil?Id genuinely love to know as i've been warned off it you see.Thank you in advance.

Hey thanks for that, you are very helpful.I noticed on ebay yesterday that there are a few nice pre-PD A3s (1999-2003) on there but some were around 140,000 miles. Is this a lot for this type of engine?

Just a bump? Is 140,000 towards the 'do not buy' end?

Hi BuelMy last a3 tdi went to 225 k before it started to be a painjust make sure you have a good service history. The old engine is more durable than the pd but all need to be serviced properly
Thank you yet again for your help, mate.I've noticed that most of the A3s i look at say they have full service history, these are all to be believed then? There's not really much chance of them being faked....or am i getting carried away there?Ps- 225,000 is a massive amount. However, there is one on ebay now with about 324,000!!!Please can i ask what started going wrong with yours/what begin to go on hifh milage ones?

Buy a VE engine if you want to run it on veg. oil. However the pump will gum up as well sooner or later- seen it before- but it will be ok if mixed 50-50 with diesel. From a tuning point of view, the VE engine is easier to tune up (compared to the PD) with bolt on mods. You can get bigger pump head (11-14mm), large injectors and any turbo you fancy. With the PD they tune easier with a remap but swapping injectors is complicated as nozzles need specialized equipment to replace the nozzles. As mentioned, get the ASV engine, it has Mahle pistons with oil cooling jets and it will safely double its power with bolt on mods. It also feels better than a pd due to the way they rev and make the torque low down. Pd is good engine but VE is better and has no cams issues related to in-proper oil usage...

Thank you Adamss, that is a brilliant post and is so helpful and useful to me.
Please can i ask your opinion on ones that are 'high mileage' of 14,000 and over?

I would not look for any car with less than 150k as they more likely to be clocked ! a 10 years old diesel should have in excess of that unless the speedo has been massaged or it's done short trips to the local shopping center !

God it feels like im being taken back to school here!! Thanks so much!!I was always under the impression that a HPI check would always sort that problem out?
