My card got cloned in central London last week... I did my best to check the ATM but it looked fine... didn't have a "throat" on it... the keypad did not look fake either... ATM fraud must be getting more and more advanced...

Some stats on UK fraud: 5 tips to protect yourself from ATM fraud

Common types of scam: Keep Safe From These ATM Scams

Yeh so on the weekend I get a call from the bank and some C U Next Tuesday... has been having a lavish stay in New York at my expense... flights to NYC... 2 nights at the Waldorf Astoria in the Queen Suite... purchased a painting from a public art galary... had an expensive meal at a restaurant and even brought jewellery from Tiffany's!!!

I was fuming... felt violated etc. and hope that the Police track down the scum... loads of people were queued up that day to use the cash point... so I'm guessing a few others have suffered too. It sucks... could have been worse... once happened to a friend on pay day and his bills were due out that day!!! I was lucky... the bank know my spending pattern I guess and they will refund all the amounts in excess of £3,000 soon.

If only the gun law was a little more relaxed in the UK and I could find out who it was...

Be safe peeps!!! Keep cash on you or use cash back I say.

I've been hit so many times I've lost count. Some of the highlights though.........

1) A couple of "youths" arrested for some other small crime and when their possessions were checked they were found to have a Halifax cash card with my Natwest bank details programmed into it.

2) Numerous online purchases made using my bank account... totalling almost a grand.

3) Failed attempt at withdrawing loads of dollars from an ATM in Canada. My bank saw that I was trying to use my card in London at the same time so they blocked to canadian attempts.

...and add to that idiots using my name and address when getting caught fare evading on London transport. Once I had to appear in court because of it, another time I ended up with a criminal record (which got cancelled), and the last time I had to get my local MP to argue on my behalf.

Its bad but I don't even get p*ssed off when this stuff happens now. Its almost normal.

Think I need a new identity.

I work as a Fraud Investigator for a credit card company here in the UK. You'll be surprised the lengths some people go to commit fraud - although in all honesty card skimming is the lowest loss sector within the UK, mainly due to Chip + Pin being introduced.

Was your cards used fraudulently? And if so, how?
Also, were these debit or credit cards?

I keep most of my money in a separate account with no card. That way there's only a few hundred in my cash account, and if I want anything more substantial I transfer it over then promptly spend it. That way hopefully it should be safe.
Like 99% of people I work hard for my money, and I want to be the one enjoying what's left over, not some theiving scum bag.

Yes. Various online transactions were made in the USA. It was a debit card. The only reason the bank called was because the scum went beyond the over draft and the card declined. I don't know if they could tell I was in the uk as I had withdrawn cash the day before.

Ads. I feel for you. How did they get your full details? Is the address held on the card too?

Nope, address details arent held on the card at all. Only thing held on the card is the account details itself... account number, expiry date, cvv number etc.

Address details can be taken in many ways, but will have nothing card related. You could transact somewhere which subsequently has a data hack. Example of this is the Sony Entertainment hack a year or so back. Fraudster could go through bins looking for details. Sounds scummy, but it does happen.

The list is endless.

i only ever use one cash machine, its on a 24/7 petrol station right by the cashiers window, i use it everyweek so if anything was out of place i would notice :)

in a town near me with 2 cash machines a skimmer was installed on one of them and the other was vandalised, this was done over a bank holiday weekend and 100s of people in the town were cloned!

Although card fraud is reducing, it is still massive.

Having a card reading device and a camera fitted to a machine is very lucrative. The most popular machines to be targeted by the fraud scum are supermarket machines. This is because no-one checks them regularly.

It is a very distressing experience for anyone who sees transactions being robbed from their account. As hard as it is, it should not be taken personally. The fraudster isn't after YOUR money, they are after ANY money.

Identity fraud is the worst of the worst fraud, and can ruin people lives.

The Bank know it wasn't you, they will return all your money.

We all lose out in the long run.

I'm not surprised there is so much identity theft, given how careless people are with their personal information. Two streets away from me, there's a car parked on a drive. The vanity number plate makes it obvious what the owner's first name is, and the small print at the bottom of the plate includes the owner's surname. The first time I noticed it, I thought "great, you're giving away your full name and address. If only I knew your date of birth, I could make a fortune and make your life very difficult".

It's just as well I'm not a crook because about a week later, I was walking the dog past the house, and there was a sash pinned to the front door, saying "Happy 40th birthday, (first name)!"

It never ceases to amaze me how thick some of my mates are.

Using Facebook to say they have gone on holiday and my mate is always posting up pics of his clean bike and car. When he does it pins his location and then he's surprised when someone tries to nick his bike at 5 in the morning.

Add to that the forum threads on various forums about what is in your garage. Folk quite happy to take a pic of the entire contents and location of tools, bikes, cars etc etc

No bleeding chance. It's easy enough for them as it is.

Amazing! You are one clever dude, what you spending the money on? :whistle2:

Quite a lot of card and owner details are obtained by rogue employees...that transaction you did over the phone just needing the 3 digit number on the reverse of the card is all they need.A few websites require a dob...never give them your real one, but it isnt that hard to get.So if its gonna happen, its gonna happen, but you must be dozy if you dont know by now to check the atm card slot.If the card dont come out, then there will be a lebanese loop fitted which has a false card slot attached to a loop of metal ribbon and a non return flap at the rear of the slot. The machine wont dispense the cash till the cards released.Your card doesnt come out, you leave.Scumbag pulls the card slot which pulls the loop out which releases the card and your cash pops out.The atm's still cant beat this loop. Its a case of just check the machine and cover your pin entry in any case.I have written a duff pin number on the back of my cards, three attempts and its swallowed.

Lebanese loops are now easily picked up by the new card reading devices in the machines and will force the machine to close. Most Banks now will only block the pin number after 3 incorrect attempts, but rarely take the card as it was a big area of complaints from customers.

The best way to protect yourself is to keep a regular check of your Bank account statements and report any unknown transactions as soon as possible. The Bank will reimburse you if you have been a victim of fraud.

There is a new microchip that may be placed into the Iphone 5 or maybe 6, and it can allow you to type your password into the phone from the comfort of your car, tell the phone how much you want to withdraw, and then go to the machine and just wave the phone at it. This gets around card devices, false fronts, hidden cameras and the old "shoulder surfer".

But that technology will also allow you to pay for goods using your mobile, so in the future you will not even need a card, and cash might not be that necessary.

However, the fact is that the crooks will find a way to defraud any new payment services. They are clever little winkers!

its such a fakkin shame... some people are just plain stupid or careless but for the rest of us who try so damn hard to be aware and get caught out... man... im angry all over again... looking at my statements and all the stuff that has gone out that is being refunded one by one... pushed me way to the end of my over draft and just lucky bills werent due... i would pay all that money to anyone who would lead me to the scum that did this... then id... ok may be im too angry right now so im going to log out and put the recorded footy on.

If you did go overdrawn due to the fraud, your bank/credit card issuer should refund whatever charges youve had...

Its in the Ts and Cs!

Ha mate you'll be surprised what can be done to ATM machines now. Ive seen devices at work that are hidden ie inside the part where you put your card so you cant see it... card is then skimmed, cash machine says it cant read your card. machine throws card back out and you are non the wiser and try a different ATM...

believe me, just because the ATM looks ok doesnt mean its safe!

The employers take money out of your pay packet and send it to the government who then spend it on areas that they don't tell you about. For example, duck pond houses, second homes, even chewing gum. All for themselves, not for the country.

That is fraud, but does anybody do anything about it? Nah, we let them "pay it back" and allow them to imprison a few "rotten apples" to make an example of. And they are still at it. Baroness Warsi is claiming money for accommodation that she isn't paying anything for! Is anybody saying "if I could find the cnut I will kill her"? Nope.

But if someone nicks £20 out of your Bank account, you want to find the fraudster and kill the sucker.
