My S3 Thread

Picked up the brembo calipers today, they're monsters :D

Got a good deal and they look like new and have almost new original pads, handy! Ideally I'd go 350mm two piece discs but I think I'll go MK4 R32 for now. The adapters support both 330mm and 350mm which is cool.

Ok. so people should try this :) ......... take hold of your Audi key and hold it up against the screen where Sams key is pictured. Press 'Ctrl +' a few times or hold 'ctrl' and roll your mouse wheel up until the key in the picture is the same size as yours......
Those calipers are massive! :)

Well, they are quite deep and the key is sat on my desk so it's a bit off but yeah, they've mahoosive.

Going to get some brembo decals, HEL braided lines (rear too), R32 332mm discs and the adapters and I'm all set. Going to attack it all at the same time hopefully. I see bleeding the brakes is a right pain, and you need to do the MC and clutch as well?

i did the MC with the gunsons kit mate.. and yes it is a ****** pain sadly enough

They are very deep Calipers and need reasonable spacers with a good alloy design with a lot of room behind the spokes to get them on

It'll be worth trial fitting them before plumbing them in ;)

On my oz superlegs which admittedly are et45 but are 19's I couldn't get away with a 20mm spacer and even filled a radius on the Caliper in areas, it looked ok with 1mm or so clearance until I drove it and the alloy rubbed :(

Luckily enough a mate had some cheepo shims to get me over it temporarily but am now running 25mm on the front

It may be worth buying some universal shims/spacers to play with to work out what you will need because these really are huge ;)

Yeah I've read on the R32 forum that:
"You are limited to wheel choice. Hence many peeps go OEM Aristo + 10mm spacer or BBS CH 18x8.5J ET30 with 3mm spacer (front) or Porsche Reps + adaptors."

I run BBS CH at ET20 (ET35 + 15mm spacer) so I "should" be ok (famous last words). I'll have a measure up but they are pretty spacious wheels, no real dish :(

Sevv: I'd take it to somewhere to get them bled and fit it all but garages charge an arm and a leg and usually take longer than needed. I'm tempted to have a go myself. I've done plenty of old school, non abs setups but never a "modern" car.

You should be ok then mate as I'm now et20 with reasonable clearance ;)

With bleeding I'm sure you'll be able to handle the task
Gunson easy bleed does make it a lot easier and main thing to remember is that the brembo's have 2 nipples per side as I have seen some people not do both on each Caliper including a garage on my car lol

Vibratechnics mounts arrived:

mounts.jpg

VF Dogbone on it's way. As are the adapters for the calipers, HEL braided lines, and small brembo decals for the calipers.

Tossing up between OEM and ECS 2 piece discs:
Audi TT MKI Quattro 3.2L > Braking > Rotors > ES#258683 Brake Rotors - Pair (334x32) - 1J0615301AA302A
Audi TT MKI Quattro 3.2L > Braking > ECS OE 2 Piece > ES#4102 Replica Rotor Set - Floating, 2-Piece Slotted (334x32) - 301AA302A-2PCSLT

Surely just got the two piece?

Very nice mate, what mount setup you gone for, road or competition? Also arnt standard r32 discs 2 piece anyway?

I went for road mounts. At the moment I drive it every day to work so need it a bit nice day to day. Saying that, I drove a pretty lairy 205 (headwork, cams, quaife box (115mph max), jenvey bodies and group a suspension) every day for a while which wasn't bad but very fun.

Yeah the genuine OEM R32 discs are kinda 2 piece in the sense that the rotor and "bell" are more separated than a normal disc. While they aren't detachable as such, they retain most of the benefits of a 2 piece. The pattern ones are often regular one piece. Here's a genuine OEM R32 disc:

22050_x600.jpg

The problem is they are ****** pricey to replace (and they'll probably go up?) whereas 10 bolt 330mm rotors will be easier to source, lighter and probably cheaper than replacing with genuine OEM rotors.

i personally got tarox and they are great i think 350$ for the front disc 332mm for 316$ with shipping extra 70$ from awesome but they are great and compliment the tarox 6 pot calipers.. here is a view of them

20120511_140211.jpg

how much are you paying for yours though thats the question :p

The discs from ECS are $650 which isn't bad when you consider what the R32 discs go for. The 334mm one piece discs weigh a ton and it's not an ideal spot to have extra weight. The tarox do look alright mind you.

$70 shipping for discs? Surely not unless its by sea haha

well ill be honest sam the caliper weigh close to 3 kg's BOTH mind you and disc are probably 12 kg's both so its not too bad and yes way way cheaper then 650$ that blows and shipping is DHL 10days waiting period by Air. 50 pounds i think the cost what mike has told me... i know since im ordering the same discs and pads for the rear.

Yeah but 1 piece discs will always be cheaper than 2 piece but that's because 2 piece are lighter and the rotors are usually a bit cheaper to replace than new 1 piece discs.

Those calipers do seem light! They're usually that per side...
brake weights

That's an awesome price on shipping for the discs. They're usually more like $150+ for a pair.

i told you bro , great great website you got there, mind you for the tarox brake kit i paid 132 pounds but it was bulky, i asked for the rear discs they are i think 256mm and he told me 50-60pound mark.. so they are good... Tarox wins the day :p weight wise atleast

by the way concerning the miltek cat-back system you got did you get it from crydon racing $1,000 fitted ??

if so ill book the S3 in this month =]

Yeah about that from memory. Maybe between that and 1100? Contact Dave @ ATPG.

Thanks Sammy appreciate it mate.. by the way i think a Sydney meet is in order we probably have 5-7 people ?

Yeah for sure. I'll send a message around or something once I've fitted all these last bits...

^^ I paid a little more (not much more), I think our dollar was a little weaker when I ordered mine. Still a good price, considering it includes shipping and fitting.

hmm sounds okay.. you know i could just get it shipped for for (400pounds)626AUD but God knows how much shipping is i would guess probably 150-200 pound mark not sure though , but i guess it will come back to the same fitted? unless i can fit it myself then thats 200$ saved :p

Haha well you do seem to get good deals on shipping so work your magic. It's two massive/heavy boxes though. That rear silencer isn't light...

hey sam sorry for taking so long to reply, its the 18's that have the larger pistons and more travel I'm afraid can't remember the exact spec off the top of my head. However the ecs kit comes with the 18's so they can't be bad! kit is looking awesome!!

just a note as well, as has been said you do need to space the wheels out quite a lot, i had to use 20mm spacers on my rstt's.

tom

You're the first person I've heard say the 18 have the bigger pistons, every other person has said the 17z are larger because they use smaller discs so needed larger pistons apparently.

I should be fine with the CHs. They are recommended by the R32 lot as above and I'm running lower offset that they quoted so *should* have more space.

That is true and if you want to get into particulars, the larger 18Z's are theoretically more progressive since it's front pair of pistons are smaller and offer less initial braking force and bite. The smaller-rotored 17Z calipers actually have larger pistons than the larger-rotored 18Z. The 18Z has a 30/34/38mm piston arrangement and the 17Z has a 34/36/38mm set.

And...
VWVortex.com - FS: New Porsche 955 Calipers - Gloss Black

Will have to go and check now lol got mine from a mate who is a mechanic at Porsche who recommended the 17's because of the smaller pistons, will have to rip them off and check now.

Build thread is looking wicked though and good luck with the fitting :)

Did he measure them? Everywhere I've seen has said the above, but I've not measured first hand. Some people seem to have though...

Bought some 10.9 M16 bolts yesterday for the calipers, only to realise I only bought 2 (what a numpty). Went back in today and ordered 4x35mm and 4x40mm in 12.9 zinc coated. Not sure what length I need so thought I'd make life easier when it comes to fitting.

Just realised I ordered S3 brake lines and not R32 ones. Hopefully they'll be ok.

Fitted the Vibratechnics top two mounts today. What a mission. The transmission mount has little/no adjustability when compared to the standard one so it has be almost perfect to line up and fit. Bit of a nightmare. Space is an issue of course.

Anyhow, I'm not really sure how much difference they've actually made. I think my OEM mounts were in good condition! There is a bit more vibration and sound transfer but the engine does seem tighter on gear change so I guess that's a plus. I guess they'll bed in a little which might help with vibrations. I think bang for buck though, the dog bone was probably the best bet.

dog bone is always the best bet :p

Love all the mods you have done/are doing.

Those brakes are monsters and discs are lovely looking.

so jealous of all you guys out in Oz, wish i lived there. Oh well the plan is to be out there this time next year. cars seem pretty pricey out there though :(

with the brake lines you need custom ones with an s3 female fitting at one end with a cayenne male calliper end on the other.

i havnt measured the pistons myself, i took his word for it. However i am bleeding them this week so i will whip the discs and pads out, and get the verniers on them :)

See this is where I've read many other things too. The S3 lines come with a banjo end which fit the Cayenne caliper fine :) Pretty much every "how to" I've read, they've just used standard mk4 r32 braided lines. Even the MK5 lot use MK4 lines. I think I'll be ok.

I took the car for another drive last night and there is a definite improvement. You feel a bit more "connected", it's odd. There is more noise but I actually don't mind it. It's not a harsh noise just that the car feels tighter. I had Group A mounts on my old 205, which were pretty much rock solid but also felt good. It meant you could hear the quaife box a lot better :)

dog bone is always the best bet :p

Bang for buck wise definitely. I already have a powerflex bushed OEM one but have a VF engineering one on the way. Have you changed mounts?

Thanks dude. It's more expensive owning a car here that's for sure but the nice weather and lack of salted roads makes up for it!

The VF dogbone and HEL lines are here. Both look awesome quality. The HEL lines are fully stainless steel. The goodridge lines use zinc plated mild steel (they offer stainless for extra) which would just annoy me I think. Hoping they are long enough else I'll have to order another set! The VF dogbone looks really well made too, something that I can't really say for the Vibratechnics mounts. They might offer a better ride than the VF ones but they are using zinc plated steel so they'll inevitably rust (I've seen a set for sale with rust). I know stainless isn't as strong but I'd expect them to use it where possible.

not yet atm im getting the rear disc pads, going and Bilstein B12's ordered...but ill be doing it in the next months or so with the miltek catback :p

btw did you need spacers to fit the new brakes oryou haven't fit them yet ?

After spending a bit of time driving (to and from work today and around town to go shopping etc), I am starting to think the mounts have made quite a difference to how the car drives and behaves. It feels way tighter and gear changes are super precise now.

Here's the VF dogbone:

Looks really well made. Keen to get it fitted. I was going to tonight but ended up at the pub...

The HEL lines fit the caliper perfectly:

hel.JPG

They are the ideal length from what I've read. The quality of the ends is awesome:

Not fitted them yet but as I said further back, they should be fine. The R32 guys seem to recommend CHs for clearance and it looks like there's shedloads with the standard calipers. We'll see...

Adapters are here:

Ignore the random horse on the right. I'm not mental or anything, my mrs is asian and reckons they make you work harder or something. Weird.

Just waiting on the lovely ECS discs now...

I fitted the VF dogbone yesterday. It's made the gear change mega crisp but has massively increased vibration. Going to give it a trial run but might swap back to the powerflex bushed original. It might "wear in". It's also very close/touching the power steering lines so I need to something about that. I think they've been bent in the past by the looks of them. I'm not sure.

Dog bone looks quality mate I would give it sometime to wear in before changing back as you said :)
Them brakes are massive can't wait to see them on

So either the VF dogbone has "worn in" or I am getting more used to it. It's still vibrating a fair bit on pull away mind you.

Dropped the caliper adapters off at the powder coaters today. Getting the done in black. They're made of steel so need some kind of coating. For $20 you can't complain.

A mate has offered me some R32 discs to test fit the calipers with which is handy. He said I could leave them on till the ECS ones arrive but I don't have all the gear the bleed the brakes just yet.

Gagging to fit the next lot of parts:
Braided hoses all round
New brake fluid
New 'box fluid
New rear diff fluid
Haldex service
Rear ARB (20mm)
Rear control arms (2 sets)
New rear drop links
6 pots
Drop links
Ball joints
Wishbone bushes
Track rod ends

Should be mint !

Picked up the R32 discs. They're used but still 32mm. Looks good:

Not sure about the Brembo decals?

Going to fit them this weekend using these discs I think and just bleed the calipers. Hopefully it goes ok!
