Well I've finally done it!! wipe your eyes!! your probably as shocked as me :jump: - Sold the S3 in favour of an estate! to carry my two dogs (Pyrenean mountain and retriever).

I've had my S3 for sale for a while before being offered a cash sale with a local dealer, only took a slight hit on it ;) - I was going to go for an A6 3.0Tdi avant after ruling out several estates, 2nd place was a Passat, 3rd was a 5 series (purely for the boot size) - the Mercs looked like old mans cars...

Anyway, as this is a kind of 'growing up' strategy, I had a certain budget in mind, which yes, i've broken :( it came down to a fully loaded Avant SE and this - the Avant did less to the gallon, was more on the tax and was a fair bit slower!! so i ventured to London to see this BMW 535D (twin turbo'd ;) ) which was a few grand less than it should have been due to a complete iDrive failure - after getting down there i found the auto tailgate was screwed, it had one door proper dented, amongst quite a few other things - I'd done my homework though and so i chipped the poor kid another fair wack, based on the fact his car was a shed :)

So over this past two weeks I've spunked another 2.5k on it so far - seems it had the top six popular issues associated with 5 series bimmers, and now its running and almost fully working! can't tell you how releived i am!!

Options wise it has; Adaptive Xenons, Panoramic SR, Auto tailgate, Heated full front and rear sports seats (fully electric), Cruise, Bluetooth, Professional widescreen sat nav, Multi changer, exterior light pack, interior light pack (inc ambient), auto dimming rear view, auto dimming/heated/folding door mirrors, auto lights/wipers, 19" 6 series alloys, privacy glass, Tyre pressure monitor, GSM phone kit, pro climate controls and MF steering wheel. Prob missed something off.

Work carried out so far; FULL service (anything that can be changed, has been), new iDrive modules, Towing module, Sunroof mod and seal replace, Rear suspension auto level repair, auto tailgate module and slave strut, water drains cleared and modded, new rear tyre (275's!!), space saver bought, fitted Dension MP3, rewired boot to repair the boot hatch/diversity antenna/key fob operation, deflapped the inlet manifold, replaced vac pipes with silicone, replaced both thermostats, replaced boot light (added LED's), repaired boot cover release, shampoo'ed the interior, brief detail on the outside (no claying yet), removed front tints, replaced side repeaters, fitted new mates and boot mat, loads of stuff has had to be coded (even the battery!!) - I've defo missed a few bits, i'll prob remember later ;) to say i've been busy is an understatement :)

To do; Rear seat heater switch, Rear supsension compressor replace (preventative), M sport front/rear bumper and shocks and a light module for my Halo's which aren't working - and mapping ;)

All in all if i'd have bought it at the correct price, I'd have had to do a few of these jobs, therefore its worked out pretty well for me :) I'm still well under a grand, to what the cars worth.

What's it like to drive? very fast for a car weighing what must be almost 2 tons!! down side is if you want to race, i'll gladly have a play, just as long as you give my gearbox a split second to decide to get its **** in gear!! :) i hate autos :( once going though its a fantastic bit of kit - with better mpg than my S3 :)) still miss my Audi's though and that S3 was easily the best car i've ever (wanted) to own.

After many years on the forum its time to say bye bye peeps, i'll keep nipping in every now and again to have a gorp of what i'm missing :bye:

Old...you will be missed :(

Thanks to everyone for all their help over the years, this forum has been invaluable!! I've joined a couple of BM forums which have been very helpful - they just dont seem to have the community spirit (well at least i've not discovered it yet) that this place has - that's another reason i'll keep nipping back for a nosey ;)

oh and the wood..... it's going!! haven't decided whether to carbon or gloss black 'wrap' ;)

Nice machine Tim! No one expects to stay with one brand for life, and the BMW 5-series in not a bad machine at all. I've ran a B5 Passat estate as the family work horse for the last 10 years, and it's pretty bullet proof @190k odd miles, I've hardly had anything go wrong with it that I couldn't fix myself.

Was looking for an A4 Avant to replace it for a while, but never found the right car, A6 is a bit too big.

Cheers Jo, the passat was almost a done deal - i looked at an A4 first but the difference between that and the passat boot was huge!! couldnt actually see why the A4 was called an estate tbh....

Very nice tim, there are a few good beemer forums, im sure you will fit in....:icon_thumright: might even meet up with fkn jardo....:undwech:

cheers Dave ;)

planned mate ;) Just sorting the engine out and cleaning all the coked parts up and checking for boost leaks etc before I jump in ;)

You're gonna have lots of fun with that, Dude! Nothing wrong with Beemers, our last mudplugger was an X5. Plenty of room for your doggies, ..I wanna see pics of them!! All the best and don't be a stranger  xx

Nice motor Tim - one beast when mapped no doubt. You should indeed lose the wood trim though - that plus fertiliser would be getting a bit too sensible...

I remember when you were buying the S3 from my local place. Glad you sold it on okay in the end.

I'm about to go over to the dark side myself with my new job - I was going to get a Golf GTi or GTD, but I've just been offered the bosses 10 month old fully loaded 330i coupe instead. It'll be a bit of a sod on tax, but with all fuel paid for, I'll manage!

I'm particularly looking forward to not having to use my indicators anymore with the bimmer...

What a car (ignoring the wood!).

Looks like you've done a good job tidying it up. The 5 has always been a brilliant car, as long back as I can remember, and they really shift even before the map so you won't miss he S3 too much!

V6 Beemer estates, oh yes!!!!!!

Bigbird - bin a while mate!! :) thanks again for all the help you gave me, what seems like years ago now!! 330i with fuel? that sounds a bit fine and dandy to me mate, hows it compare to the S3, slight drop in power i'd imagine?

Warren, it defo needs to go doesnt it haha - still torn though, dunno if carbon or piano black would go against the grey.... thoughts? V6 is nice, but i was getting excited with the A6 3.0tdi boys saying how nice the V6 diesel sounded... have to say its a frickin washing machine, no R32 :( but didnt expect that tbh haha

Paullie, just for you ;)

Hi Tim - I've not got the motor yet & in a daily change of plans, it seems my guy got it wrong - the car is actually a 123D Coupe M Sport auto instead of the 330 coupe I was really looking forward to. A manual version of this car would have been my choice of 1 series back up car anyway, so I'm happy enough.

Hopefully the great engine will keep me happy - its a torquey beast apparently. I'll put the S3 back to stage 1 to wean myself off it slowly...

haha good plan mate.... i love the 1series, but only the saloon version...if i didnt have the dogs, i'd probably have had one of those instead of the S3!! the 135 of course.... although I won't knock the S3 and im pretty sure it'd have been a messy decision :D

Are you going to throw a cheeky map on it for the reasonably small cost? ;)

Ha ha! ...not sure - it's a company car and I've always been the type to declare all mods, so don't think the company insurers would take too kindly to it. It should have enough torque as std with the twin scroll turbos for me to be happy.

Had a great run over the Snake Pass & around the Peak District yesterday in the S3 when visiting the parents but I'm looking forward to a newer, non squeaky car now. It's time for that change...

Aye, mapped up now mate.... it's definitely an entirely different beast! handles like crap though due to the SE shocks and the fact it weighs more than the space station... currently sourcing some front lowering springs, and /or M sport shocks.... i've got M sport front ARB to fit... just bought new pads to fit and also have the M tech bumpers to wack on.... i'll post pics when its all done mate, safe to say its cost me a fortune so far - good side as i've said is that i've knocked most problems on the head - downer is its prob gonna end up costong closer 12k by time im finished. Most things that you would replace are now new though so hopefully few years of worry free motoring due.

The power is weird through the auto box - if you put ya foot down fast the box hits a second sport mode and the torque converter stops it putting the power down. So weirdly, to get the power down you have to gradually push the pedal down..... standing start you can simply boot it. Not as sharp as the S3 but not bad at all for a car weighing what it does - still want my S3 back though :(

Nice one Stuart, did you drive an Audi 170 to compare it with?

Here's a slight update from me, finally got around to lowering this bad boy - M sport bumpers currently in the spray shop.

Too low?

cheers matey :)

I've decided to get the M sport front shocks though, its defo far too low at the minute

Loving it. Looking for one myself, or the 335d. Will have to keep an eye out.

thanks :)

I would go for an extended test drive first though... the auto box in the 35D's are an aquired taste - it would have put me off had i driven it longer...

no point trying a 170.I have one mapped to 200 and it still cant get near a 320 let alone a 335!!!!

Oh yeah, what BMW forums have you found?

Currently using Bimmerforums.co.uk and 5series.net ..... they are ok, theres just too many BM forums though so i tend to do my research through google.

TIP: Bimfor25 for euro parts 25% off everything! ;) saved me a bit of money that :)

Got myself a 335d M-Sport touring. Wonderful motor. Same economy as the 177 TDI Quattro A4 I had, but with over 100 BHP more. Can't complain at all. Loving it so far.

Although I do think the Black Edition did look better.

very nice mate...and an LCI model too - thats probably helping with the economy, they introduced quite a few significant upgrades on the LCI cars, different ECU, engines mods etc that cannot be retro fitted :(

Surprised its the same economy as the 177 though...

Hello Dare!!!

I haven't posted in a while - the project however is almost complete :) slightly over budget, but done to my liking...

I have now decided to keep the wood finish, after taking off the carbon, i think it suits the cars colour combo, and with it being darker wood, its not as old manish :)

Looking good Tim! My mate just asked me advice on 530i or 530d! I told him to go 530d, but he still went with 530i with his own money. Preferred the power delivery of the petrol he says.

cheers mate....

Yeah the 530i is a bit slower isn't it? have to admit though, it sounds far nicer. I personally wouldn't touch the 530d, the manifolds are prone to cracking due to the turbo set up, the 535d is completely different with the twins, almost bullet proof in comparison... then you throw in the common problems associated with the E60/1's and your talking a ****** expensive car to run (with all pending problems)
