I have a weird problem that occurs sometimes .I have the original Audi Bluetooth unit fitted which operates via the radio head unit, the RNS-E. Sometimes when I answer a call the sound coming from the speaker that appears to be my left has a terrible resonance about it, especially if the Person has a deep voice, it sounds like a vibrating panel or cover. Sometimes when the Bluetooth is pairing the bong appears to do the same, does anybody know which speakers the phone uses, I have searched high and low to see if any panels are loose, and I am wondering if I have a perforated speaker somewhere .
Any Help or advice would be much appreciated, Bri

It’s so frustrating, only appears when using the phone, and then its intermittent .When playing music it doesn’t seem to be present.

Exactly the same problem in my brand new A3 black edition.

I turn the volume down when i answer to reduce it but is irritating!

mine's due an oil change service in a couple of weeks - I'll ask them to look at it then and report back.

It ONLY does it during a phone call and NEVEr when listening to music/radio.

Right. Car booked in for service a week tomorrow (24th May) and this is on the list of things for them to investigate, along with:

  • Rear parcel shelf rattles over bumps
  • Slight judder when pulling away from cold - in first or reverse gear.
  • Rattle at idle when hot - goes quieter when clutch depressed.
  • Stop/Start - works flawlessly most of the time. Occasionally, when the engine stops it shudders to a stop instead of “fading”. Can’t pinpoint when it does it, but it feels more like it’s stalled.
  • Wiper blades are leaving thin streaks across the windscreen - if it was my car (and not a lease car), I’d have replaced them by now.

I "may" have identified the culprit - after much testing, it seems as if it's the centre speaker on top of the dash. Most of the audio from the bluetooth phone call seems to be routed through this speaker and in mine, something buzzes/resonates inside it.

From the drivers side, the buzz appears to be coming from the left side of the cabin, but it's deffo the centre speaker.

I didn't even realise there was anything under the grill, I just assumed it was an air vent or something - lol

Car's in for a service on Thursday and I've asked them to look at it - will report back.

I get pretty much all of these apart from e start/stop and wiper blades. Let us know how you get on.

You can turn the gain of the bluetooth module down using VCDS - when I installed mine it was buzzing and sounding pretty horrendous but I changed the volume setting to -3dB and then it sounded fine. It's still loud enough (I can hold a conversation at motorway speeds in an S3) but just sounds much cleaner now.

I checked this morning, on my journey to work and your right about the centre speaker cover, it definitely contributes to the vibration, so will be checking ELSA to remove-mod-replace, will check on VCDS to lower the phone settings .

Thanks for that , I will let you know how things go

Car has been in for 9,000 mile service today and they have done what was suggested by jasonc and reduced the overall gain of the bluetooth sound - tested on way home from dealer - seems fine now.

The other items that I had them look at were dealt with as follows:

  • Rear parcel shelf rattles over bumps
comment from Dealer - "this is the same on all A3's"

  • Slight judder when pulling away from cold - in first or reverse gear.
car booked if overnight for a cold start test next morning - courtesy car organised.

  • Rattle at idle when hot - goes quieter when clutch depressed.
comment - some sort of air valve that opens when the engine is hot which makes it sound like something is rattling??

  • Stop/Start - works flawlessly most of the time. Occasionally, when the engine stops it shudders to a stop instead of “fading”. Can’t pinpoint when it does it, but it feels more like it’s stalled.
comment - hooked up to VCDS - no fault codes found.

  • Wiper blades are leaving thin streaks across the windscreen.
comment - replaced blades

Not convinced about the explanation about the hot idle rattle, but I don't know enough about these cars to take it further??

I think I'll invest in some black foam tape to stop the parcel shelf rattling - lol
