Some of you won't know me on here, have not been on for quite a while... Been a bit disillusioned with the S3 and then started coming back on here again and thought to myself right I just need to shot some more cash into the Moneypit Club..... So decided what I was going to do for my next steps..... Worked out what it was going to cost me...... About another £1500 to £2000 and started to get excited again.....( I'm sure everybody on here knows what I'm talking about....lol).... But my friend is a Porsche Specialist who has just rebuilt a Boxster S and he said why are you going to spend that much money on a car which is only potentially worth £2000 to £3000 anyway... We carried on talking and I asked him how much he would do the Boxster to me for... He said I'll sell it to you for £6000....A quick drive up the local drag strip I was flat out 150 and climbing very slowly and he was pulling away from me..... We stopped a couple of miles up and swapped over I jumped in the Porker not as aggressive as the S3 on acceleration more progressive but straight to 150 without even feeling as if you are doing it.... Were as in my S3 you know your doin it..... So that's it my minds made up.... Im going to go from 1 love affair into another 1...... As much as I have loved her and as much as always will love her it's time to move on..... I can get this for 6 or shot another 2 at mine...... It's a no brainer really....lol

I'm selling.... But I haven't started this thread to sell my car... I've started it just to say I need to get out while I still can..... It's like a disease it eats away at you....lol... You can quite easily spend between £5000 and £10000 on a car that is subsequently worth between £2000 and £3000...... You just cannot help yourself and I know alot of people will agree with me on that.... I need to get out while I can.......It's like a heroine addict lookin for his next fix..... An S3 owner lookin for his next mod.....It's an addiction....lol... I'm takin the high road and gettin out while I can sell the S3 save the £2000 I was going to spend... Add a little and get myself a Boxster S......Happy days....

Hahaha....Its all about the Benjamins Karl.... I'm just not prepared to put any more money into it and what I want to do wouldn't be cheap....

But really who honestly cares about doing those speeds? You don't live in Germany, on a trackday the most you'd do is like 130 odd, a proper drag strip you're only going to see early 90s. In the real world acceleration and handling is key. The Porsche is always going to be better at high speed because of aero. Sure everyone has a top speed blast in every car they'll own without a doubt but they'll probably only do it once where as how many times are you likely to throw the car around some corners on a daily drive or accelerate from a stand still quickly. First time since modding the a4 I went to see what it could do and after about 2 miles I hit 150(on the clock) but I don't intend on doing that often or ever again for that matter.

Even though your mates a specialist the costs from looking after a 10year old s3 to a Porsche of any description will be vast. Spending 1500-2000 on a 3k car is nothing these days. You could buy a mk2 golf gti for 200quid and quickly spend that amount of money on it. If you were set on doing it in the first place don't be swayed so easily buy someone that ultimately is going to make you spend that same money on a Porsche(that you're going to get less for your money) which will be lining his pocket instead of someone elses.

If you spent that amount on your s3 and ontop on what you've listed in your sig you'd smash a boxster IMO. Plus you'll look twice as good doing it in an s3 and not looking like a bender as Karl pointed out.

Keep it, spend that money, go back and prove your mate wrong. Next time you have a play with the two cars just do it when it's raining and then see who has the upper hand.

Well said Jason !! I have owned many cars much faster then my a3 and driven even faster like a 600bhp twin turbo skyline!! But it never swayed me from my Audi, the cars u talk about are in two different leagues and completely different engines, u have to look at it long term mate costs to run, insurance, reliability, and at the end of the day say u do buy a great Porsche and go speeding down the motorway and a modified car blows u away what then? I find it more fun to have a sweet simple looking car and watching other drivers as u leave them when they try to chase u, but I'm not ranting at u mate just make sure that's what u really want to do and if it makes u happy then good luck to ya fella!!

I'm with you mate, they are money pits and if you feel like its not worth it you should sell up... Iv been considering swapping mine for something else for a while now, been looking at Evo 8 (which was daft), Elise's, westfields and even tested a ford ranger... Only thing holding me back is the hassle of selling it...

I know what you mean about spending lots o money because ive recently ploughed the money in to rebuild my engine and I've not spent half the money some guys have.

For me though it's not about how much the car is worth if I ever come to sell it. I know it's not sensible to ever sell the car after what I've spent on it. I have a plan that eventually my car will become a track/weekend car purely fo fun and it will live in the garage. All well and fine I you have a garage, I know, but I'll never sell.

Anyway good luck to you if you do go for the porka. I bet it won't be long before you're bored with it ;)

When you get the poxter... fancy a top speed run against my S3?
The Boxster is a poor mans 911 so alot of people will always think... Its not a nice car... im sat on the fence... but they arent as fast as you think they should be.

upgrade to a Porsche?
Time to move on?
Its time for an RS4, go for it :)

I understand your argument, and I think it's a very personal decision and you shouldn't let people on here influence you.

The boxster is seen as a poor mans porsche yes, but it's a bit like going out with the ginger one from girls aloud; lesser model perhaps, but it's still in a whole new league!

In terms of all out speed even the boxster S isn't THAT quick, I can happily out run one in my A3, but for all round driving pleasure and handling, it'll whip the S3 into next thursday without breaking a sweat.

why a boxster tho? ive worked on and driven lots at work, i think theyre awful cars.

so what if it does 150mph and the s3 struggles to do it? its a different car.
this will drive through some serious offroad stuff that your s3 cant, why not buy that?.....

altho seriously over priced at 6k!

if its a reliable porsche on a budget you want that you can enjoy on the road/trackday/drag strip in equal measures. it would have to be a 968cs for me.

while not that powerful by todays standards, these things are such well handling/balanced machines, keep it nice and it'll never loose anymore value.

at the very least go and find one to drive!

My mate had a boxster s and loved it! That said I had it for a few days and ****** hated it!! Each to their own and all that!! The main problem I had with his boxster was the face looks as bad as its ****!! Lol hope u enjoy the car buddy (6 months b4 he comes running back!!) lol

I'm seeing porkers of all shapes and sizes lately! If anything it makes my little Audrey seem totally inadequate... Ok, bad joke..:jester:

Apart from the daily unpractical side of owning a sports ragtop, I don't agree it's a bad car given it's been a success for Porsche for well over fifteen years. Also if reliability means anything to the OP it will be less problematic than owning a S3.
Porsche Boxster scores big with Consumer Reports' 2010 Reliability Survey - Top Speed

usually people that buy and have boxsters arnt that knowledgeable on cars in general. usually people who dont know any better, hair dressers who used to drive mx-5's for example.......
common boxster faults are.

leaves getting trapped infront of the twin side mounted radiators and rotting the corners and subsequent coolant leaks.
creaking suspension lower arm ball joints.
stiff gear change cables.
nuts on the exhaust system rotting off.
rear main oil seals.
the timing chain relay shaft bearings collapsing.....
if this happens the engine needs rebuilding then thats the car written off!
coils failing.
airmass units failing giving uneven tickover.
air leaks are common.
heater matrixs fail.
water pumps seem common.
i hate doing any sort of engine work on these just because your having to lean over the back wings after putting the roof half way up and removing the back section of the roof, the carpet covering the engine cover, and the cover itself. or the panel in the rear baulkhead thats rediculous too.

they are such hateful cars with little redeaming features imo.

Thanks for all the comments.... some positive some not so positive...lol.. But hey that's everyone's prerogative.... I have owned my S3 for about 2 years and have loved every minute of it she still brings a big smile to my face when I put my foot down....If I could afford to have both I would but I can't plus mine is 13 years old now even though it doesn't look it.... But from an early age I have always liked Porsches the old 911,s shape and style is synonymous in car history... Ok this is not a 911 but for not a lot of money these are a very good car from a classic marque with excellent build quality.... And I know they have problems but my friend repairs these all the time and anything that can go wrong with this particular model the Boxster S he has rectified ....I drove it for about 5 minutes yesterday and I was hooked the way it delivered the peer and the noise from the engine when you put your foot down was music to my ears....lol Plus basic parts and servicing are much the same as the S3

and the bmw m3 is in the bottom 10 and the hyundi coup is in the top ten? who fills out these questionaires???
Haha, people who need to get out more obviously.

Porsches in general aren't exactly a mechanic's dream to work on, albeit the Boxster being mid-engined will be as difficult as most mid-engined cars imho.
Besides the engine layout, the common problems list is no worse than it is for an VAG car tbh.

good luck mate and happy motoring.
Let us know how it goes in real world terms of owing and cost wise compared to owing an s3.

I have always liked Porsche. In fact I like any manufacturer with heritage, history and unique products.

Since Jeremy Clarkson rattled off "but its just a poor mans 911", everyone without the ability to form their own informed decision just spouted it as gospel. The fact of the matter is you are getting all of the quality, heritage, history and performance skills that makes Porsche what it is.

However, comparing the performance of a mid-engined, rear wheel drive, 2 seater with a heavy 4 wheel drive premium hot hatch built for cruising in comfort is apples and oranges.

All cars are money pits eventually, put the same mileage on a boxster as you have on the S3 and you will end up throwing the same if not more money at it as parts will be more expensive. Not to mention, enjoy working on the mid-engined motor, you need to ****** drop it out for almost anything, (fill up the windscreen washer fluid lol).

Having drived my dads Boxster S, I must say I was a little dissapointed, heavy clutch, not enough torque, and the tombstones look great, but were not that comfy. However, I have never had so much fanny look at me while cruising along in a car before.

I am sure you will enjoy the Boxster S, its a brilliant little premium performance 2seater. Just bear in mind, financial reasons are never a good justification for going from one performance motor to another, and enjoy not being able to shove a washing machine in the boot!

if your mate knows these cars and is supplying you one...... make sures hes changed the intermediate shaft bearings for the redesigned ones and fitted a new clutch while the gearbox is out. also remove the scavenge oil pumps from both heads and checked them for wear, cus when they wear out they deposite shards of metal into the oil.
get him to fit a new waterpump too.
also get the front bumper off and get the decomposing leaves out from round the bottom corners of the rads.

dont buy it mate. seriously they are gay cars, unless your a hairdresser by trade,
i know someone who got one, not that practical, thirsty, overall maintenance is higher and they do have rough reliability.
also is a poor mans 911, it may have a porsche badge but its not a proper mans porsche.
bang some dosh on the s3 mate and rwap the benefits. id rather have a heavily modded motor thats had time and effort put into it rather than just buy something factory spec. this is just my opinion and noway slagging you off. good luck pal.....

An S3 owner lookin for his next mod.....It's an addiction....lol....

This rings true for any car owned by an enthusiast. Are you expecting to spend less on Porsche performance parts...?

Please report back in 6 months time when you've shovelled £10k into you're £6k porka [and paid for a hair transplant 'Rooney style'].

It's an incredibly difficult comparison to make between a modded S3 and a Boxter and let's face it your posting this on an Audi forum so never going to get a pleasing retort!
You will look either gay or a midlife crisis waiting to happen driving a Boxter...... maybe look into the Cayman or just get an older proper 911 IMO but these decisions are so personal it's not for me to say. Personally if you’re looking to save some money you wouldnt be looking at a Porsche at all and if it's bang for your buck you wouldn’t be looking at Porsche. If you’re a modifier at heart you won’t be able to leave it alone anyway so should be looking for a sweet platform to work from.

Apart from the "looking gay" jab this is all meant in the best of spirits and good luck to you whatever you decide to get :)

Go for the Porsche and enjoy it I have been driving Porsches for many years and the feedback and driving experience for me is just what I want as long as you get a good one they are normally reliable and not that expensive to maintain yourself or from a decent specialist.
i have the S3 as a daily (Porsche is summer weekend car)and it is a good car and practical but not a sportscar but it is horses for courses and i must admit to falling in love with the audi.Go on to the tipec forum and have a chat on there about it you will find lots of advice and buying tips here is probably not the place as I most on here will be die hard Audi until they sell it (oh no I am in trouble now)
People will always put a Porsche down remember the 924 from late 70's early 80's it's just an Audi who would want to be seen in an Audi!!!!

The boxster was similar to the 924 in Porsche circles and because of how good it was it became more mainstream than enthusiast and there is its only fate although in recent years people are warming to it as it is a good handling and enjoyable car I don't myself have the boxster and is not on my list of Porsches however I have warmed a lot more to it in recent years, there will always be a it's not a real Porsche it's not a 911 brigade (normally from dreamers and non owners) but go for it and enjoy you will not be disappointed the S is the one to go for and it's handling and feedback is what you enjoy (there will always be a chaved corsa brigade who hound you)
i can't remember what year you where looking at but if it has a plastic screen fold it each time you put it down to stop it cracking
but good luck in whatever you decide to do

I find my S3 is absolutely PONY with big top speed. Granted it is only standard (bar a B5 TIP/08) but on my private test track, i found it a massive struggle once up to 120 to get much more in any reasonable time frame!

my E46 M3 practically zooms up to 160 indicated with no drama!

Ok, displacement of 3200cc Vs 1800cc but makes the S3 seem sooo slow!

Also what would you expect for your E46 M3 Vs S3 8L?

Got to be near double the price or so?

And the M20 is everyone's 'private test track at certain hours' ;)

Hahaha.... Nice one Karl.... Had it out today for a good test drive today.... And no it's not like my S3 it doesn't pin me in my seat when you floor it.... And it doesn't go round roundabouts like it's on rails....But all jokes aside they are a lovely car to drive.... Nice and tight lots of feedback from the steering if it's skips out a bit it's all easily corrected.....Anyone who has driven one cannot deny this....
