superkarls overhaul

Aww i want mine now :(, haha.

Can you get black washer caps?

I painted mine wrinkle black but its started flaking.

So id their no models that we can get these off?

Bad times.

Nar ali is too blingy for blacked out engine bay lol.

I've been looking for other colour caps from other makers but no luck yet.
I did find a clear cap on a ferrari but it did not look that good.

I'm toying another idea but I'll need to do some research in to it first and get back to you lot.

Looking good Karl. :)

fitted my forge short shifter this evening, its been in my boot since my visit to awesomegti for alignment so quite a long time!
P4100139.jpg

was an absolute ****** gettin the cables off the the ends of the linkage, used a large screw driver and spanner to lever them off in the end.

i couldnt believe what it was like when i test drove it, its SOOOO fkn short, gonna take some getting used to. i did fit it in the shortest position, so might adjust it back a tiny bit, but we'l see.

how does everyone have theres set up??? short as possible or what?

i also have this in my garage:
P4100140.jpg

i just need my gaskets to fit it, oh, and some will power.

i have everything now for a 'stage 2' tune. which is what i've wanted for a while, but always prioritised other things like suspension etc.
my welly cooler is with someone getting 63mm pipes put on.
hopefully by this summer il have it finished for a while and enjoy what will almost certainly feel like a new car.
it will most likely be going to R-tech once things are fitted, where i will request to have boost and torque sensible (before i rebuild with rods), i think id also like it quite smooth and progressive power. im not too hung up on figures and dont just want as much as possible, but i guess depending on condition of my car when it comes to mapping, 260-270 would be very nice for now! i have had a standard map for 2 years now! i must admit, i find myself wanting more power when im using it, sometimes i feel quite dissapointed.

anyway, i will most likely update when i have my FMIC and have fitted my downpipe/decat.

laterzzz

Haha! If I didn't point it out someone else would of!

Karlos I have my shortshifter as short as possible too. It's the only way to have it. You'll soon get used to it and wish it was shorter still! I want to get the shortshifter for the side to side movement at some point too.

Very good mate.

So where the ends a ****** to get off? Also how come you havent upgraded the cable ends to the bolt straight trough the middle, like the 8p ones?

Do this Karl

done that scott thanks, its part of the installation

been for a drive tonight, just hunting chavs down n shizz, and i have to say i like it alot now, makes the drive feel really solid, like you're connected directly to the gearbox. i cant imagine il get the side to side one though, seems ok as it is, id never find the ****** gears!

mmm nice downpipe :)
you got a b5 TIP yet?!

Ive got a both way short shift, and is very tight, does take some getting used too, but then it is amazing...
how tight do you like it dave? like a yut?

a proper ****** to get off! people had said 'they just pop off', nahh!
at least they arent going to come off though. whats the benefit of changing the ends then? have you done this?

Haha i was one of them, thought they did mate.

Yes and know. The ends are meant to offer bet shift feel as their isnt as much movement, but ive filled the voids in my ends with sikalfex, hoping to fit the ends along with both my short shifters monday/tuesday so ill keep you updated on the outcome mate.

Very instructive, rebushing is the 1st thing i plan to do when i actually get the thing and stop perving about planned mods on here!!

There is nothing like that feeling of it being ''tight as new, never ragged or rallied'' - think i need a younger GF then.. ;)

mine were in the first batch, sent out first class recorded so about 2-3 days.

if you've ordered some then you might be in the next batch, depends when you paid. from what i understand though porsche are waiting on a delivery of them so scott can collect more and post more. there are ALOT of orders for these.

ready to rock n roll

still not fitted the downpipe, been enquiring at a garage for it to be fitted because its easier basically, i dont have the time/patience/facilities.
il probably get the intercooler fitted in the next week as i have 2 weeks off work. dont really need the car in this time so i can take all the time i want.

Your making me think if i should weld my pipes on too, ive got either 76-63mm silicone elbows or 63mm 90 alloy bends, ordered both lol. What made you choose to weld them on karl? Also did dave do it?

for me keeping the fogs is a must, and no-one has tried this.
bill did weld 3 inch pipes on with the cooler upside down but this is different.
i really hope it fits well, i do expect some trimming, but not enough to sacrifice my grills and fogs.
pipes sticking out isnt for me.

and nah, some **** head caravan loving gypsy did the welding

So did you offer the cooler up mate then mark the pupes accordingly? So dave? Lmfao, only jokin dave :).

Loving this thread! just read all of it! making me want to go take my car apart!lol

HELP!

disaster has struck.
thought id empty my catch can today, so i take it off, clean it etc, refit it, then i thought id start the car up and see how my downpipe sounds (its blowing like tulisa), so i start it and it sounds as expected and some fumes coming up.
i gave the car a little rev, nothing mad at all, and smoke bellows from the bay....uh oh.
i think, hmmmm, thats a lot for exhaust fumes, so i shout my old man, who instantly says thats oil. its coming out the exhaust and somewhere in the engine bay, through the blowing flexi i assume.

i've jacked the car up, wheels off to gain better access to the bay and the back of the engine, and i've discivered quite alot of oil.
i've taken plenty of pictures:
drivers side, looking past the driveshaft, up along side downpipe:
P5130160.jpg

and the same but deeper in:
P5130161.jpg

downpipe flexi, looking through the wheel arch:

passenger side, looking at turbo comp housing:
P5130167.jpg

tried to get a view of the turbo feeds:

turbo hot side:

and finally another drivers side view, where all the action seems to be happening:

now im stuck on what to do next. i've taken various parts off to gain acces to the back of the engine from top and bottom. im thinking of putting it back together, and starting it to see what happens, and see if i can see a leak/smoke source.

now my dad (mechanic) thinks the breather system has become blocked upon fitting of the catch can, we dont know how, but thats our initial thoughts, seeing as the rocker cover and oil cap was under such pressure. And he thinks something has blown, an oil seal or something, and its either a. leaking into the combustion system somewhere and its burning oil. or b. i have an oil leak that is just burning onto the downpipe.

it seems like this might be a tough one to solve, and if it is internal problem i have another car on standby, and the s3 will come off the road for a rebuild.

i am ****** off, but in a way i think perhaps i should take the opportunity to strip her and rebuild it. i
ts served me dam well having covered 147k now, and never really had a major engine problem.

im just stuck now, and would ideally like to know what went wrong and why.
so any comments or opinions are welcome.

cheers fellas

to add, what is that pipe in picture 2 and the last pic that is covered in oil?

also, the comp housing was damp underneath with oil.
the turbine housing as seen in the pic has a wet patch.
the centre of the turbo where all the various feeds are is bone dry.
and the downpipe is wet.

i just cannot think of an explaination.

il put her back together and get a video for you all

Hope you get it sorted Karl. :) x

Have you been checking you engine oil level? Does it use much? Also how full was your catch can? The reason I as is that if your can was full to the brim then it might have illed the breather system then leaked out somewhere. Clean up all the oil and runthe car for 5-10 mins then see if the oil is reappearing.

uses a little, nothing major.
catch can was pretty full to be fair.

the verdict is, after going out for a coffee and leaving the car in my dads hands, that most of the oil is burnt off now and smoking has stopped. somehow the car has injested oil, for an unknown reason, and its blown out of the downpipe flexi and has burnt away.
the leaking has now stopped.
so im about to start it up and go for a steady drive round the block.

then im going to start looking at other engines. lol

Hope its nothing major dude.

On the bright side though, perfect excuse you rebuild for more power :).

...back.
smoking out the back and the engine bay.
dad says dont worry about it, its the flexi thats saturated in oil and will take time to go :wtf:
so il trust him and hope that it goes. nothing else i can do for now.

on a more positive note, been driving my mrs focus ST today, and i get back in the S3 and it feels AWESOME to drive.

Could the full catch can have spilled out all over the DP at some point?
its no where near it, wouldnt be possible.
dads verdict is pressure has built up and oil has blown back somewhere, somehow.
im not arguing with him. but if it manifests into something else he'l be helping in taking it apart!

as if my life couldnt be any worse right now, here is another issue:
first time i had alignment done at awesomegti i left with this:
P5130177.jpg

INSANE camber on the rear, on a standard suspension car, so the tires lasted about 8 months before they were TOTALLY illegal, and i left them for as long as possible!
so then i took it upon myself to spend a fortune fitting coilovers, adjustable tie bars, and ANOTHER set of tires and then i went back to awesomegti for alignment again. i explained that after last time i visited them camber was stupid, but i let that one go, and put it down to old car with old suspension and bushes. i also SPECIFICALLY told them i wanted a neutral road setup that wouldnt kill my tyres, after research i made my decision on some settings that would be perfect and i added them to my first print out (pictured above).
these were my results of the SECOND visit to them:
P5130178.jpg

as can be seen, front end is good, no complaints.
back end, rear toe is WELL out. i was ASSURED, by 2 guys at the desk AND an engineer that carried out the alignment and road tested it, that it is nothing to worry about and the rear toe is so very minimal i wouldnt suffer from any excessive tyre wear... really???...
note the date on second printout, 22nd feb 2012. tyres were 1 week old at the time.
P5130179.jpg

P5130180.jpg

P5130181.jpg

ITS A ****ING JOKE!

i noticed this about 2 weeks ago while checking over the car, i've got my MOT this month so thats why i checked everything.

im not happy, at all, this is my second set of tyres in a year, its not right, and each time i've gone to them with issues, and left with more issues.
fortunately for them, i havent had the time to go there as its a bit far for me. but originally i wanted to see a 'reputable specialist' YEH RIGHT, and thought it was worth the trip.

total costs of this alignment mayhem:
2 x alignment @ £99
2 x sets of falken FK452s @ £320ish
plus petrol and time off work to travel 40 miles to get the work done.
and now i will DEFINATLY need 2 rear tyres @ $160ish
=
£998 not including the fuel/time etc, and the necessary modifications to make adjustment easier.

some one, is going to die...
