My S3 Thread

Did you get your stuff done? What did it cost? I think I'll stay safe for now and just do the suspension and replace my current discs and pads...

Did you see there was an RR day at the weekend? You should come to the next one. There were far too many Golf R's there, would be nice to get some older models representing ;)

Lcr setup is possibly a good upgrade and setup for yourself if not as is factory fitted to that chassis? 

OK - brakes it is then :)

What's the limit on the standard system? Would a GT2871R be a bit much for it?

hmmm, possibly, i think tuffty saw the limits of the standard cat back at 350hp.
but a custom cat back is a much better option than a miltek imo

I had massive back pressure issues with mine... EGTs were through the roof... Welly runs a non res Milltek at nearly 450hp and I have a 3" system with a Milltek back box...

I did run a full custom 3" system with straight through back box but it was just far too noisy/droney inside the car... got too much when I did a trip to my brothers and was the first time I was actually glad to be out of my car... the Milltek back box made all the difference so don't discount it as a solution... you can still have a 3" system leading up to it...

The system I first built up...

It's about $1000 supplied. I can fit it myself but then the suspension parts are probably about that? Does it sound much different to OEM? Much better?

The note has changed... nice burble but on fairly std cars its not loud at all... on a turbo capable of checking out 300+ hp it gets evil on boost :D

See, thats tempting. The car in standard trim sounds pretty tame. B5 TIP and Jetex help a lot but the Mk5/6's I've heard with decent exhausts sound pretty good. Not seen many 1.8T's around here though. The fact it'll help later is tempting. Arghhh I dunno...

I'm wondering if it's worth me getting an exhaust now to try and keep my EGTs down. I've got everything else just been holding off on an exhaust for so long.

Not sure what the limit would be on your setup... on mine I actually tripped a egt temp exceeded fault code hitting over 1000 degrees!!!! probably why my first housing ended up being cracked..

At your level of tune its a sensible option to consider changing the exhaust... Milltek bore is 2.75" which is more than enough for most hp levels...

Sorry to Sam for a slight hi-jack but it's all related to his too I guess.

Tuffty, not sure if you know but I bought an S3 backbox for £20 with the intention of getting 3" pipework from my XS DP back into this backbox. Any idea how restrictive the S3 back box is? I was hoping this would be quite a good cheap fix for the time being as I'd have 3" all the way through to the box, keeping the standard look at the back and removing the smaller pipework and middle silencer, all for about £100?

The restrictiveness of the OEM back box is relative to the power level obviously... at 350hp it was massively restrictive... simple test tbh is to do a run up a 'private' road with the back box removed logging EGT's, airflow etc and compare to runs with the back box on... if there is an appreciable difference then you will have your answer... all the hybrid/big turbo S3's I have been involved with have had Millteks...

I am all up for the OEM look as you know but even I am having to concede that OEM has its limits and I have hit most of them during my build :)

Totally cool for the hijacking. Like you say, it's worthwhile info.

I just realised the local guy can do the exhaust for that price fitted. Might have to put in a cheeky order ;) I know it might be a waste of cash to some but I'll be getting this GT2871 fitted at some stage and I'd like the noise change I think. I'll be doing the suspension bits as well. And the rear ARB/swaybar is on order anyway...

I had a AE86 Trueno back in the day and put 4pots up front and 2pots on the rear with custom carriers. Engineering was around $400 back then but I have heard people talking in the realms of $1000+ these days because the ****** know they can charge whatever they want.

Yeah I keep an eye on the outings in Sydney but I still need to get my clutch sorted so wouldn't of been able to run. Along with the clutch and a few other bits I am just buying parts as I can afford them so I can get it all done in one big weekend. After it is done though will be hitting up as many events as I can!

Cool - be good to see some of the older ones out. These Golf R's are a bit a 2 a penny where as the older models are getting a bit rare!

Going to revert back to the suspension stuff and just buy everything I need and hit it in one go. Are there any cool bits I can do to the front like the gruvenparts rear arms?

After hearing Dane's S3 (I know it's got decat and downpipe so it's going to be louder), I had to order a Milltek Non Resonated. Went with the standard pipes. I managed to swing a proper bargain fitted price ;)

I can't do the suspension stuff just now anyway as there's no ramp space at the dudes garage I use. That's next though. The 20mm rear ARB just arrived.

Good stuff Sam. After the discussion on your thread of the last few days and the logging I've been doing, I'm now on the lookout for a milltek backbox/cat back system. God these things aren't cheap!

Yeah I know! Luckily I was bouncing quotes between two companies to get the price down, only to realise one price was fitted haha! I figure I'd get it fitted since they only wanted $60 extra to fit it.

Sorry if it seemed like I didn't take your advice on board, I did but I'm going to do all the suspension at the same time! And brakes upgrades have extra complications here it would seem :(

Don't worry about it. Ivehad my suspension done for a year now but I've now reached the point where an exhaust will help me performance wise and it makes sense for me to sort that out before I go to get it mapped again. On stage2 the exhaust wasn't so much of an issue.

Yeah makes sense for sure. Mine was really just for looks and noise and future proofing for the garrett when I sort out this dudes website for him...

Going to do all the suspension bits in one hit...

It's from eBay. Was supposedly designed for the car but it had the same connector as the loom on the car so I had to chop off the connector from the old aireal and solder it all up (and heatshrink it) to the new one...

Going to get my Milltek fitted tomorrow at Croydon Racing. I feel like a kid at Christmas, not because of the Milltek but because they've built so many awesome cars; 3rd quickest R33 in the world, quickest silvia in the world and a mad quick R32 called "Jun".

Jun:

GTR700 (before they went mad on it):

Its famous run:

On the FMIC note, the ambient temps have been getting lower and lower here. On the drive home the other day, even with stops at traffic lights I only just hit 30c with ambients of 15c. On boost it will get down to 3-4c above ambient. Pretty decent. I managed to finally fit the heatsheild from Dave which should help. Going to try and fit the engine cover to make it look a bit more OEM but it needs trimming as I have cold side relocation now.

Milltek fitted. I got to check out GTR700 and DEVLSH (Quickest Silvia in the world) amongst their other monsterous creations but they took a while to fit it. I think it was because it was their new premises but still, 3.5 hrs :/ crazy.

I've retained the cats and downpipe until I get the Del Rio GT2871R kit fitted. On the way home it was a bit loud but it's quietened down a touch (probably didn't help I had the rear seats down and no parcel shelf on the way home). Hoping it'll get better with time. If nothing else, it looks awesome:

I got an awesome deal through Dave @ ATPG (based in NZ) so if anyone is in the market, get in touch with him. He was the cheapest I could find landed and fitted in Sydney by a long way.

Yeah I saw yours after I'd ordered mine. I think it's nicer than the regular Milltek tailpipe but I was worried mine was sticking out a bit far at first. After looking at yours though, it looks like thats normal.

How's yours sounding now its worn in a bit?

yeah sounds fine mate not loud at all just a nice tone, there is quite alot of adjustment on these to where you want the tailpipe think it looks perfect where your is :)

Cheers dude. Yeah it looks like out of the box it doesn't sit quite in the middle of the cut out so I had to adjust the passenger side hanger to pull it over a touch. Seems ok now. Did you have an extra hanger on the mid pipe that nothing on the car to mount to?!? Maybe it's for the TT? I wasn't sure.

Bridgestone_RE11.jpg

Just ordered two Bridgestone RE-11's to replace my two rear Pirelli's that are shafted (were used when I got them on the BBS) so the Falken 452s will go on the rear and when they go I'll get another set of RE-11s. Apparently they are awesome tyres. My Pirelli Pzero Nero's are so loud now they are worn down. Louder than my exhaust at low speed. Although that could be a driveshaft...

Milltek is looking good mate ;)

Wouldn't worry about the mid hanger as mine has one as well which mounts to nothing

Seeing all these millteks being fitted is getting me excited. Oh and btw, I know that my car does have a middle hanger for the OEM exhaust so I'm wondering if it was added to the later cars?

It has one hanger on the mid section but just in front of the Haldex there's an additional one. Looks like there's a spot to bolt something to the chassis though.

I used to follow the GTR700 updates on the website, it was a awesome car back then and still is to this day

Yeah me too, until the site died :( I saw it at the weekend and the engine was out but they are going to be working on it again soon. I asked about engine specs but they just said they're fitting bigger turbos haha. Maybe I should offer to resurrect exvitermini.com for them...

Just got the new re-11's fitted and aside from them giving a better ride than the 452s, the really loud rumble has gone. Can you a) guess what "camera" I use and b) what could be causing the rumble? ;)

I need some adjustable control arms pronto :(

Top marks haha.

Looking forward to the drive home! The only downside of the RE-11's is they look like a larger profile, even though they're not...

A few bits ordered:

- 2 x sets of Gruvenparts rear control arms. I went with the heim joints in the end. After reading up on it, some people had issues with the heim joints locking up but it sounds like bad maintenance and not going with the rubber boots to cover them. They've also improved the joints. I couldn't be ***** to do the bushes in the top arms and you get a discount when buying two sets.
- Gruvenparts adjustable rear droplinks (rose jointed)
- Vibratechnics top engine mounts (engine + gearbox)
- VF Engineering dogbone

I'll chuck some pics up when they all arrive. Hoping I can get in and do the front setup.

Might be picking up some Brembo 6 pots this weekend. They are the 18z ones. Planning on running them with R32 discs but will look at finding some 2 piece 350mm discs.

Cars looking awesome sam! I'm just fitting my 6 pots up front but went for the 17z's, have you bought the ecs kit or sourcing adapters and stuff seperate?

tom

Going for the adapters from eBay (Jack the lad) when the time comes and sourcing discs locally. I avoided the 17z's as I heard they result in more pedal travel due to larger pistons?

Picked up the brembo calipers today, they're monsters :D

Got a good deal and they look like new and have almost new original pads, handy! Ideally I'd go 350mm two piece discs but I think I'll go MK4 R32 for now. The adapters support both 330mm and 350mm which is cool.
