Yeah that's what I have. Packing it all up to bring back now.

Shame that the boost hoses won't be sent till after I've left. I might wait until they arrive and do it all at once. Makes sense...
 
yup its always a bummer... im hastling awesome to send me my brake kit to fit on the car to rego it or else it wont be rego'ed =[
 
So I have all the bits that I need now to fit the intercooler this weekend (if it stops ****** raining). Just been to Bunnings, the equivalent of B&Q, to get an angle grinder, cutting discs, sanding discs and a nice fresh 8.5mm drill bit to attack the crash bar. Also got the last few bits to do the cold side recirc valve relocation. Hopefully it all goes flawlessly! haha

Good thread youve got going, enjoyed reading it, does that fmic allow you to retain the oem fogs? Or will you remove them. Good luck with fitting and the results ;)
 
Cheers! Yeah, from what I can gather, it'll allow me to keep the fogs. I want to keep it subtle looking so that's good :)

So in my hungover state, I managed to the intercooler fitted and mounted ok. The bumper still needed some trimming and I could only fit one horn. On my test drive, a boost hose popped off and had to limp it home so I have no idea whether it made much difference...

Yeah true, but the day is like 8:30-6 on a Sunday! I want to just cruise up at 1 and have a chin wag and ****** off really. I'll see if I can run a bit later...
 
I gave it a run on the rollers in the end and it was freaking out and the haldex kept flicking the rears on and off mid run. Bit disappointing but I didn't get a chance to run it up again. It only made 146kw/296nm at the wheels because of this. It's logged 220g/s on the road so I can only put it down to the haldex thing? AFR looked ok, a little rich up top but otherwise ok. I'll get the chart up later, looks like the southdowns.
 
****** :( $65 wasted then haha. Well at least I know the fuelling was ok, if a little rich...
 
I've not really had a chance just yet. I'll take it out one night and do the usual 3rd gear test and see how I go. It feels a bit better but that could be placebo. The front end certainly looks better!!
 
My question now is what next?

1. All driveshafts rebuilt - They are making all sorts of noises, boots went on the front passenger side and rear drivers and were temp repaired with superglue to stop more leakage. The others probably aren't far away.
2. Suspension - Bushes replaced (wishbones, ball joints, drop links, subframe and rack mount?, rear arms)
3. Brakes - Cayenne calipers and R32 discs
4. Exhaust - Milltek cat back non resinated with the "special" tailpipes as per Danes

I'm thinking 4 (easiest) followed by 1 and 2. The exhaust will be easier than the other jobs and they're likely to get done with the GT28 when it eventually gets fitted (need to save up for rods etc!).

Edit: Oh, and 5) Vibratech engine mounts all round (already have a dog bone)...

A quick blast this morning produced 220gs without too much effort! Will do some more logging when I can...

AITs were probably 20-25c. Ambient was about 15. Pretty nippy!!

I'd say brakes. Out o all the other mods this will be the best performance wise. I'd then go with engine mounts, then all bushes, then exhaust.

I've left the exhaust till last on mine as I see it as a waste of money if you're after performance. The most restricitve part of the S3 exhaust system is the DP and manifold.

Drive shafts should be ok unless you've run the CV joints dry for a while. CV joints can still last a long time with split boots as some grease will remain. New shafts and joints are not cheap.

Seb (the dude doing the GT2871R kit) has said they're about $250 each fitted but as we'll be doing all that work in one hit so I might do the shafts/bushes/mounts/catback in one hit. Makes sense as the engine will be out anyway (and I will do rods etc). I'm thinking of getting an AGU block and head to rebuild before hand to save time...

I think for now I'll get some Cayenne calipers then ;) Discs are the painful part. Getting OEM MK4 R32 discs here are a nightmare...
 
I ended up getting ebc plain r32 discs as I found oem ones cost a fortune ££££ and nowhere seemed to do cheaper pattern parts as they're handed and the vanes in them are directional :)

Iirc I paid around £140 for ebc discs where as oem were over £300

Glad you liking your cooler as love mine (cheers tuffty) and am looking forward to seeing your further progress on this build ;)
 
Stacey: Yeah that's what I've found. I found a place that does 2 piece discs for the R32 for $600 but shipping is another 250/300 :( Thinking I might just get replacement S3 discs and some decent pads for now? I think you may have to get an engineers certificate here to upgrade brakes anyhow! :) I think I might just get the suspension sorted and stick with standard for now. How are you finding the vibratechnics mounts? I'm seriously considering them. Did you change the smaller bush in your dogbone?

Sounds like modding carries a bit more agro with it in aus :(.....so there is some downsides to being out there althought not many lol ;)

The mounts so far I love them there's definately more vibration when standstill from the engine on idle but when I first drove it after fitting them it handled very differently and felt a lot more planted, but that was more than likely due to my old ones where completely shot and I managed to pull the cambelt side one apart in my hands lol
My downpipe is currently rubbing on the steering rack which puts a dampener on the whole experience as the oem mounts you can move and position the engine/gearbox about 15mm due to being on slots on the mounts but vibratechnic ones don't allow this which is good but on my car I had managed to bodge it a bit by moving it to get over the downpipe situ

I've got powerflex yellow dogbone mount and have also replaced the round mount on the dogbone with a powerflex one :)
 
so sam lemme get this straight i just put the tarox kit on the s3 ill get pulled over by the cops if they see it ? however it is black not flashy at all esp the wheels are black too :sorry:

Yeah it has its downsides with regards to mods. Insurance ain't cheap either. I am looking at getting a ****ter for the work trip. Old civic or something japanese and easy to mend etc. Don't like driving the s3 every day to work...

Those mounts sound good, definitely on the list...
 
OK - brakes it is then :)

What's the limit on the standard system? Would a GT2871R be a bit much for it?
 
OK well I'll look at that nearer the time I guess.

I think I'll do the brakes once I get clarification on what's legal etc. For now I'll sort the suspension and engine mounts (vibratechnics). The front end has always felt a bit like it needs tightening up and it's getting to that age. I'm thinking:

Front
New wishbone bushes
New ball joints
New drop links
Subframe and ARB bushes (top mounts + bearings done)

Rear
20mm Whiteline ARB (ordered) (would go MK4 R32 but they had 16mm here)
Gruvenparts control arms (4)
Gruvenparts adjustable drop links

Sound like a good list?

Yeah Sam sadly changes to the brakes for almost anything that was not an 'option' on the car from the manufacturer requires getting an Engineering Certificate.

‘Owner certified’ minor modifications which can be accepted for registration purposes without formal certification.


Examples of minor (owner cer tified) modifications are:
Fitting a ‘package’ available as optional equipment for the vehicle (eg front disc brakes, power steering, alternative transmission and bucket or bench seats)

Brakes
Brake systems must not be modified such that the brake performance is reduced or that the risk of failure of the brake system is increased. Brake discs or drums must not be machined beyond the reconditioning limits set down by the manufacturer. When brakes are upgraded using components or systems which were not standard options for the
vehicle, an engineering cer tificate is necessary to attest to the adequacy of the new system, eg: hydraulic fluid sufficiency, balanced braking on all wheels, brake pedal pressure limitations and braking performance.
