wondered if anyone is able to shed some light, Need to see my options an what to do..

I brought the S4 last weekend, its been remaped, full exhaust, etc an loads of work has been done, cambelt, egt sensor. The engine seemed faultless, no noises, nothing. it run lovely and i had no doubt about it. been driving it all week, owned turbo cars before so always warm and cool the turbo's etc. Took it for a little drive this saturday, seemed fine as usual, put my foot down in second, soon as the second turbo kicked in it popped and lost all power, and now it wont run. it starts and you can keep it going by revving it to stop it stalling, but its gutless and has a bit of black smoke, plus stinks of fuel like its over fueling. and you can hear turbo noise so at least one turbo is spooling up.

I plugged my vagcom into it and its flashed up every fault code relating to sensors on the exhaust and inlet. o2 sensors not active, egt sensors, maf sensor. these are fresh codes too as i tried the vagcom on it thursday to make sure everything was good, and there was no fault codes what so ever.

All i can think of is turbo? whats your views? I would like to know 100% before spending out a lot of money replacing them.

Ive been looking into ko4 upgrade, cheapest ive found is 4k. is this avarage price or is there a cheaper way? Also how much are new ko3 turbos and where from?

Is it defiantly a engine out job too?

Massive thanks in advance, i know nothing about these cars so could do with some help on where i stand and what my best option is. also how much would i get back in parts if i broke the car? roughly.

Cheers
Jason

Check all vacuum hoses. If you heard a 'pop' noise, the boost pressure may of pushed or split a hose somewhere. Some vacuum hoses can cause poor running when split.

As for the sensors, I'm not sure.

It is an engine out job to do the turbos. Firstly, check all hoses and intercoolers (if original smic's are still fitted). After that, get car on ramps and see if you can remove pipework and feel for any play in the turbos.

It could be a boost hose, I would get it pressure tested asap and would not be driving it as you will damage your turbos.

Just to say that the turbos work as a pair not separate.

Once you have pressure tested it and made sure nothing else is wrong then clear the codes and go for a drive and then check to see if the codes come back.

Do the turbos sound really noisy? Dentist drill type noise. What colour of smoke is coming out the back? Have you checked your oil level? has it gone down alot?

If you want some more info on going k04 drop me a pm.

Yeah the turbos are an engine out job and while you are at it there are alot of things you will be wanting to replace so you only have to pull the engine once.

Where in the country are you?

(just skimmed your post so may have missed some details)

Thanks a lot for your replies, I just had a look under the car after reading Dan's post and feel pretty damn stupid now and also very happy :)

Passenger side intercooler pipe was off, Only reason i didnt think about them was because the fact its got a full autobahn hose kit. i didnt think it would be an issue with uprated hoses. Big thanks to Dan for making me go and double check. Im not normally this lucky on problems being small faults lol.

Id still like to look into ko4's in the future so any info would be great.

Im in Wokingham, Berkshire, If anyones local or if theres any meets then im always up for it.

Thanks again

are the hoses fitted with those horrible mikalor style T bolt clamps?

If so, throw them all in the bin and fit proper worm drive clips like the JCS HiGrip.

I think so yeah, either that or they are standard juberlie clips. Thanks for the tip, Ill get some of them asap :)

The b5 s/rs4 are prone to boost leaks so it would be good to get a pressure tester and do regular checks. Also some really good hose clamps will help prevent leaks.

Glad you got it sorted mate, its always nice when you fix it for free ;-)

As for going k04, what sort of money and power do you want?

Cheers mate, so pleased it's something stupid.

I'd like to run about 400hp, should still be reliable enough at that shouldn't it? Should be running about 320 now I guess? Currently stage 1 remap and full 3" exhaust from turbos back with no cats, Is 320 about right do you think or does it depend who done the map?

Only places I can find that do the ko4 kit is regal and mrc. Both about 4k?

No worries mate, glad it was just a hose popping off.

For a 400bhp car you would only really need injectors, fuel pump, intercoolers, k04's, intake pipes, clutch, and assuming you have a facelift you wont need to replace the prefacelift manifolds. With that spec and a good map you should see 400+ i would like to think. Get in touch with johnny at JJB Motors. He looks after my 650bhp rs4 and i am sure he will do his best to help you out.

You might be able to source alot of the parts (injectors, fuel pump, intercoolers, intake pipes) (rs4 parts) second hand which will save you a fortune. Then get some either cheap second hand k04's and have them rebuilt or buy new from loba or similar which will again keep costs down. £4-5k sounds about right, as there is alot of labour involved plus the map costs £500+

A k04'd s4 should be as reliable as a stock car as long as it has been built properly and mapped well. I would have thought your car would have been 330-350 max as you have the 3" downpipes. But you say its only on a stage 1 map so with a good map i think you will get some more power out of it but you will be on the limits of the k03's. Andy on here has a k03'd s4 and its running 350 so it is doable.

Now Now HEKTOR, get your facts right. Mines running 352.6 actually lol

My bad andy lol i knew it was more than 350 but wasnt sure how much so played safe lol

Thats awesome! Thanks HEKTOR. I think ill source some rs4 parts and get ready for a future upgrade. I think for now i might fit some uprated intercoolers and get a decent map on it. I secured the intercooler hose back on after i finished work today and took it for a spin, its all good again now :)

The year of the car is 1999, Would that be a facelift?

Is it best to upgrade the side intercoolers or fit a universal fmic in the middle for both turbos?

No problem jason.

I think sourcing some rs4 parts would be the best thing to do.

I think 99 is the start of the facelift.

Some of the guys like the cxracing FMIC as its fairly low cost. I prefer the wagner tuning stuff and i use it on my own car. Not only does it perform really well but it looks great with the carbon fiber shrouds and its a direct replacement for the stock SMIC which means you get to keep your foglights and dont have to cut your bumper up etc.

Facelift was half way thru '99.

If you have one piece headlights and the smooth door handles then its a facelift car.
