well as the title says, it looks like im being offered a job panel beating in australia.

just wondering if anyone has any experience of working in australia or nos anyone whos specifically done panel beating over there?
 
As superkarl says just do it. I wish i had your trade, im a mechanical fitter and would love to work in oz. Was out there for 5 weeks holiday couple of years ago and what a hell of a lifestyle they have. Nothing is guaranteed in the uk anymore, any chance and id been gone.

i have a friend who is a mechanical fitter and he literally got a job in oz about 2 weeks ago. he moves there this summer!
 
Seriously? Is he multi skilled or just mech? I would love the chance to go. I may have to start applying. My company here in the uk hasnt got the best outlook. The next two years will no doubt decide its fate. So any chance to jump ship im away.

Some of my family emigrated there in drabs over a few years,the first in 1960 and the last in 2002,they are based on the East coast and work in catering,the lifestyle is excellent but the missus won't emigrate,I was looking forward to owning a ute :(
 
ute's rock lol, but whilst im over there its looking like a push rod for me to start with, i never lived alone and il be doing it as a first over there so i dont need to be paying for a car!!

Spent a year working out there in the coal industry just after I graduated University. Nice place. Very high wages. If you want work it's the mineral sector you want. They paid for my visa, flights, etc.

sorry to be nosey but, what do you do/did you study?
only my best mate is a recently graduated geologist over there, and im studying the same thing.
what company you work for?
my mate works for anglo american

Nah its fine, studied Geology at University of Leicester, graduated and went straight out to Oz to work for a small exploration consultancy firm in Brisbane, Queensland. Working in the coal basins. Did that for a year then came back to the UK and then worked for a few months in Ethiopia as an exploration geo looking for gold. Back home again now.

Yeah familiar with Anglo, good company I think. We dealt with Vale mainly.

Sorry for high jacking this thread. If you do go Oz, make sure you apply for your 'Tax file number' as soon as you get there. And also you can pre open a bank account from the UK which makes things easier once you get there. I used The commonwealth Bank which is like their version of Lloyds. Good bank with lots of ATMs, read this for more info:

Don't do it!!! If you leave then there will be even less normal type people living here, and it'll be worse for us who are left :)

If you have no ties etc then do it. As vorhees stated earlier, my wife won't let me either. But I do actually like the uk, so it's not all bad. It'd be nice to go for a year, but I have kids and have to think schools etc.

A mate of mine was looking at air con jobs out there a couple of years back, and with one company it was compulsory to finish early on a Friday and meet down the pub! It was always my plan to emigrate doing air con, until a bit of bad luck. Just go for it. If you keep your air fare ready just in case, there's nothing stopping you from coming back.
 
Ive lived in a quite few different countries for up to a year or two and would 'defo recommend it mate' ;) BUT after a while the novelty will wear off and you may start to miss home but until that happens soak it up.
 
lol, yup its me.

Well I'd certainly say do it. Not all things are rosey but overall its tons better. Depending where you go (been told the East Coast is cheaper) the cost of living can be a bit steep. Fuel is cheap (not that the Aussies think so! Before Gareth says anything!!!), food is dearer and flip the cost of utilities is really expensive. But we will get solar to help.

As said, get your tax file number, visit Centre Link for your Medicare card, get an Aussie drivers licence and get the bank account sorted. We have gone with Westpac, like Commonwealth, they loads of ATMs.

What can I say, its a fab laid back life style, sun shines tons more than in the UK, evenings are warm enough to sit out for months of the year, beaches are gorgeous and you can walk around all day in your thongs!! Dont get me wrong, there are things we miss but hey, its hot, sunny and great for the kids! Where we are, there are some stunning places to visit like, the pinnicles, Wave rock and Monkey Mia where the dolphins come to shore. The outbacks not far away and you can have loads of offroad fun there.

Give it a go, whats to loose???

Oh and thongs over here are flip flops lol!

Go and live in Perth WA, it is the Mediterranean of Aus - fantastic climate and you have the most spectacular big country surrounding you - the Margret river to the south and to the north.. well, how much more wild can you get.. The East coast is far more populated and urban by comparison. The westerners seem to be far more welcoming to as many are later generations brits + they simply dont get too many visitors as most people go East ;)
 
the job offer is in sydney, iv looked somewhat into rental costs for a place, and to be honest im stunned, 1 bed studio appartment, works out at £900 a month which is just rent!!! although my wage is bigger thats still expensive!! what are the utility rates like over there??
 
The rent sounds a bit steep mate, sure you aren't looking in the city centre? Bit like looking for a flat in the Docklands, versus a flat in Wembley.

My mate is out there right now, he has no intention of coming back. He loves it, loves it, loves it.
 
iv got to be able to cycle to work, and that honestly is one of the cheapest i can find in a few mile radius
 
Sounds like you are looking in a property hotspot, you might ask on an ex-pat forum about transport and see if you can get a place outside of the most expensive property market in Australia.
 
Not bad at all mate, looks like a real dreamy location, a few minutes from the beach! Sweeeet!

200 AU$ a week is about £128 a week.
 
weve looked into emigrating to newzealand, i'm on the skills shortage list as a european car mech and uk mot tester. if i inherit any money......... were off! and we wont be looking back on the uk with fond memories. i can buy a house three times as big for what i bought my ex council ****e house for.

im sick to death of the damned rain rain and the tax tax tax tax tax tax associated with living in the uk.
