Reesy's Big Turbo A3

Ok, if I'm honest. This thread is less like a progress thread and more like an online diary, but meh, i've started it so I shall continue.

Yet another package arrived today:

Thanks to parts man again, he hasn't yet shown that he is annoyed with my constant flow of questions and requests!!

Got to change 4wa now to Wednesday, as I have some boring exhibition to do with work to attend on Tuesday :(

Boost gauge issue is also sorted, it was only boosting to 10psi because I had used a t-piece with a bung in it as a joiner. Replaced with an actual joiner and the gauge now flies around to 18 or so psi.

A proper update will take place next week, I promise.
reesy, instead of putting a picture of your ball joints you've accidentally put a picture of your new butt plugs up.
id remove that asap, i thought you werent ready to come out yet.

Yeah thanks for cleaning them up and sending them to me mate, I won't use them as I am not into that sort of thing but I'll be able to get them on eBay as it's free listing on Sunday...

Oh btw, they aren't ball joints, they are track rod ends...

Nice progress thread mate. Can I ask a few questions? Is it an S3 spoiler you have attached? And if so, how is it fitted, I'm guessing/hoping sikaflex or tiger seal? Looks brilliant and if so, I will look out for an S3 one for mine :).

Yeah, it'a genuine s3 spoiler that I bought off a member on here. Got it painted and it is bonded to the roof. It's one of the best things I have done to my car, I think the A3 looks $hit without a spoiler as the back looks too soft and rounded and the spoiler makes it look a lot more squat and sportier.

Thats a nice looking A3, love the spoiler, keep up the good work, had one the same accept mine was Jaspis Green. I did an S3 exhaust, 17" TT Ronal wheels, Alpine IDA-X100 head unit and had the car remapped and debagged it. I loved it, was really quick, a few people got upset when the tried to cut me up. I bought the cruise stalk but sold the car before I fitted it. I would have done a bit more modding on mine if I had't of sold it.

The update not many of you have been waiting for!:

Car was booked in Monday for the suspension overhaul.

Dropped it off Monday as planned, with it sitting too high and the front sitting higher then the rear.

Got a call from Ben on Moday to say the ARB bushes were goosed and there was a lot of play in the bar, so I told him to change them whilst the car was in bits. This meant that the car wouldn't be ready Monday night :sob: He sent me a pic of how it was monday night, which made the waiting worse as I was away Tuesday I couldn't collect it then either, so I had to wait until this morning to finally have a drive.

Mondays pic:

And how does it drive?: Wow.

That's all that's needed really, but i'll elaborate for you lot. The car turns in where you want it, isn't much harsher then stock and feels like a low mileage example now. It's a bit too low for my liking so I'll get that changed at some point.

After blasting over to the 4wa place to find that they had the full hunter system, not a mickey mouse job as I was half expecting due to the price (£60!) the mech said everything was well out and set to work correcting it. I pulled away and it feels much better again, and after some hooning through the lanes I can safely say its up there with the remap for a change to the car, just a shame it wasnt as cheap as a map!!

Pic from when I pulled in to work:

It's all taking shape now mate.. Good job! Ride looks nice
What was the drop ? (mm) and what you planning to raise it to??

Nice one reesy lad. Looks so much better. And like you said the handling will have improved 10 folds....

Cough "avusIII's" Cough ;)

No idea what the drop was mate, it's gone from off roader to low rider is about all i can use as an example! I think I'll get it raised 10mm all round, just for practical reasons, after all it is a 5 door.

Handling is much improved mate, and ride is firmer but not uncomfortable, although I'm used to it after some of the cars my 'rents have had. Have to see what other say I guess, not that I really care.

All in good time mate, all in good time.

Did you go with the kw v1's ?? Think they dropped mine to its nuts at 35mm can't remember. I'd wait till the avus are on and see how it sits dude As it will lift slightly.

The v1 inox (the one I have) is a 50mm drop, so I think raising it 10mm will still be low enough

Good work reesy... whats next?

Dunno mate, let the dust settle on this and recoup some money. MOT in June, so it's bound to need something for that and tax end of June :sob:. Decat soon after MOT and then sort out the wheel change.

The car is too low :(

Unless you drive like an old lady and/or live camped at the side of a racetrack with all vital needs delivered to you I can't see how coilies dropped all the way are practical!

In about 15 mins driving I managed to catch the clamps for the exhaust. 3 times.
Drive through a not too deep bump and smack the wheel into the arch.
I then decided to give it some stick round a round about and got the tyre to touch the arch, meaning anyone with a 50mm drop must drive like a doris, unless the s3 setup is that much different to mine that I was a fool not to get s3 hubs and wishbones. If that is the case, please explain why but put it all in very small text so I can choose not to read it if I dont want to.

Apart from these minor issues, the car is epic fun and drives like a go kart..

Twist the clamps round, man up! Raise it up too much and you'll lose some camber on the front so ask your alignment guy if he can check it for free to make sure it's still sweet.

And this is why I got a shocks and springs kit with a set ride height that wasn't too low :moa:
**** off Fred and go and sort out your injector problem :p I wasn't fussed on getting coilies but these came up at a good price so I thought it'd be rude not to get them

I will get it raised 10-15mm and get the exhaust clamps turned sideways which should help solve the problem. Failing that I raise is to near stock and just enjoy the handling benefits.

Since I got it, this car seems to have more problems then Jay-Z :(

Battery is ****** but that's not a big deal as I have a spare.
Alternator is ******. Still giving the juice but has noisy bearings. Bit more of a painus in the anus but i think I have a spare.
The strange noise that has been their for as long as I can remember is indeed the cambelt :( From what I have been told the writing on the belt is squeaking on the tensioner and sticking slightly. The solution to this will have to wait until after the M.O.T, but something that needs doing all the same.

And their was me thinking I was looking forward to some cheap motoring!

Car seems to be running alright at the moment.

Got a fault code that i think is to do with the electrical problem that has just been sorted. I have been reliably informed that it's probably due to the alternator, so i'll have to get that sorted.

Their is a clunk in the suspension but I can't be ***** to go clunk hunting as the only thing that hasn't been changed really in the front suspension is the drop links.. Might get them changed at some point, but it's not a really loud clunk so it can wait.

Went to ace cafe last night, made a real effort on the car :lmfao: Think my car was the dirtiest there, so i should really pick up a prize. Chatted to the usual riff raff (Fred, the turk and Jay) and had a chat with Dre as well.

Here is a free sound clip disguised as a video for all that reading:

Oh, and in other car related news.

I have just paid for a 3" downpipe and decat. Best get the MOT booked now, or get to know one of those friendly MOT stations.

ooooooooooooooooooh, is this the one from Sam by any chance? or a custom jobby?

Completely missed this post!!

It is the one from Sam and was sent out to me on Friday. As of 4.51am this morning, was in Newark,NJ on its way to me. Once that and the fmic are fitted, stage 2 is done bar a map.

I need to get the car MOT'd very soon as it's nearly out and the DP is also a decat, so the whole scenario is actually going to work out quite well.

Car had the battery symbol come up on the clocks on Friday, and until that light was joined by the battery symbol on the DIS today. If the car starts tonight then I'll get it home and have the alternator swapped tomorrow, as I am convinced it's alternator rather then battery, plus I have a spare alternator..

Quattro is still the way to go in the rain, as a **** head in a Gold gti found out this morning on the way to work :whistle2:

thats very good news, when do you expect the dp to be here and fitted?

So I finish work a little early on Monday to get home for the football. The wipers were moving very slowly and I assumed the battery was getting very close to being flat, which it was. Car conked out at the side of the road, directly opposite from where I limped my previous TQS after the van had played bumper cars with it.. Swapped over to a crappy battery and limped it about .5 of a mile to a pub car park (they weren't showing the football!!) and left it there.

Got the car back to mine late Monday night, and put in the fully charged battery, hoped the car would make it to the garage on Tuesday morning, which it did. I would have swapped the alternator over myself, as it doesn't look a particularly difficult job, but I couldn't be *****. The alternator was changed for the one from my old car and the TB was also cleaned as well, as apparently it was pretty rank.. Gave the car a pasting home, and all seems well now.. Windows actually moving up and down faster then they ever have, so alternator has obviously not been able to get the battery to peak charge for a long time.

Hopefully the car will now give me some cheap (maintenance wise) motoring for a while as I am fed up with getting lifts and relying on people while this thing decides that it wants a few sick days.

Parcel watch: The downpipe was cleared through stanstead at 2355 last night, so should be with me tomorrow :yahoo:
Was thinking of getting the mani ported, but is it really worth it?

every little helps.
if you can do it yourself or get it done cheap definately do it!
its getting it off that will be an ****

I'll have to check for cracks, but I have a spare which would mean no real extra downtime, but like you say getting the mani off the car will be a pain. This is a job I will not be doing.

Ze downpipe has arrived. Pics to follow when I get home.

Who wants to fit it? :lmfao: :whistle2:
