How easy to get over 300 bhp?

Hi guys

im going to look at a 2003 225bhp S3 tomorrow after a couple of E36 M3 Evo's i think i will be wanting abit more power was just wondering

1. What sort of money would i be looking to exceed 300bhp mark?
2. what bits would i need?

Hi Id say if your doing the work youself around £2,500 or geting someone else to so the work up to £3,200,its not cheep,if you want alot of power not the best choice of car,but the drive and quility with power what more could a man want?,great if you have the money,or look in the asn classifieds by one already built cheeper,if it is abit over 300bhp good idea to make sure the rods are uprated though,cant cope with much more than 320.

a stage 2 s3 should be as quick as an e36 m3 evo.

1. Quite a lot to be honest. I've spent about £7k at least but with greater speed you need handling and braking mods as well. Certainly when trying to run 300. Essentially they run extremely hot and to run much higher power with regularity and reliability intakes and appropriate cooling in necessary. Then you have to consider the increased torque and clutch issues at this level. Don't expect it to last long at all, at that level of power.

You can spend far less and you can save labour if doing the work yourself but be warned that taking the car above a quick map (250bhp), a 007 dv, new filter and tip (which might get you around 268bhp again subjective at best)...it will get expensive

So...in a list of items for straight line speed to get 300bhp would be...

2.

FMIC - £500
Map - £350
TIP - £100
Forge 007 - £80
Air filter/Cone - £45-£100
3" Downpipe - £200
XS Power Mani - £200

might get you there...the K04 will be running hot and struggling. Westy's is an exception and seems to be delivering 300, but for how long who knows. Check his thread.

This is notwithstanding possible:-

Rods - £1000
Hybrid - £1000

and any suspensions, bushes,clutch and mount issues which don't come cheap either.

With the money your going to spend to safely run 300 brake you might aswell just go for 400 lol

im going to massively realistic and slightly negative, and i realise its not the question you're asking, but the cost of the 8l s3 plus for cost and hassle of the work to get to over 300hp, isnt worth it... im at 280 and iv had enough, if i wanted anymore id be looking at an s4, rs4 or 8p s3.

but 3k seems like a fairly realistic figure if doing the 'donkey work' yourself from what iv seen.

It might have cost a few bob and i'll have to keep it for a couple of years to make it pay but...i certainly don't regret the performance upgrades now.

i thought the 225 bhp s3 engine was supposed to be highly tuneable with little modification

It's not all about figures though mate.my car is stage 1.5 with a fmic not mapped in yet,but a BMW m3 (e46) can't pass me. I'd say just go for stage 2 and call it a day. It will be more than quick enough and will suprise a lot of cars

Highly tuneable with little modification?... allll cars require modifications to improve their power/efficiency.
A stage 1 remap is as simple as it gets, but all cars ave their limit before you need to change things.
If you want BIG power you need to be prepared to spend money making a car special, or have invested it in an already big power car.

i don't mean to cause friction but this sounds like a bit of a bold statement. . . I have a mate with a 330 BHP MK1 focus RS and one with a e46 M3, they're about on a par. I've not gone head to head with either yet but my stage 1 S3 is, by quite large margin, considerably slower. . .

I had a go against the M3 in my old stage 2 A3 (which i believe to be quicker than my current S3) and again, the M3 got ahead by a fair few car lengths. . . M3's are quick man

If you want pure straight-line speed then just buy something with more power/less weight in the first place. Personally I really value the all-weather ability of the S3 though - in the recent wet weather the grip has been fantastic. Not sure I could say the same about an M3 of any age, even more so in winter. As ever, it's horses for courses.
