Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

haha, what are you saying about my driving Bill :p

I positioned the tank with the outlet at the rear, thiinking that under acceleration, all the fluid will be forced to the back when it's most needed, then under braking when WMI won't be running it'll be forward.

I'm now wondering having seen the tank in the flesh if it's just too big in general! I did give it a lot of thought, but if I was in the wrong ball park to start with I didn't stand a chance.....

How much mix would you typically use in a Saloon race at Combe? they're about 45 mins long arn't they? Do you just have a 1 gallon tank in the ibiza or is it a mega super dooper custom jobby as I'd expect?

Meh.

You buggers have put me off and made me think.

I contacted XenonLV, and I'm exchanging my 5 gallon kit for a 1 gallon.

I still think my reasons for choosing the 5 gallon were valid, I just think I was coming at it from the wrong angles!

1 gallon kit will arrive in the next week or so with any luck, and will be mounted somewhere behind the passengers seat, to the far left hand side I think between the main hoop and rear legs of the cage. This makes it easier to mount the pump lower, and makes the pipe run and wiring a little shorter.

You buggers :p

Thanks for the advice though :)

don't have time to wait really, and I don't think anyone is running the 5 gallon beast, because as Bill says, it's perhaps not needed.

My reasons for:

fill up once and it lasts a whole trackday

The size seemed to fit nicely on the LHS of the boot floor

It's not technically legal to carry a meth bottle in europe / over the ferry, so a full 19L in tank might get around that one

Reasons against after actually getting it / being schooled by Bill:

It's bigger than I expected despite measuring it up

Whilst the weight doesn't bother me, the position of the weight does, and I hadn't thought about it before, engine is front right, driver is frontish right, heavy tank rear left, i'd be putting all the weight over one diagonal which will make it impossible to corner weight

hadn't thought about sloshing around, it said the tank was baffled, I assumed all along, but it's just a single baffle at one end, the rest will slosh around a treat.

Never considered it being flammable, and the fact that the flame is invisible makes it a scary prospect in a crash.

It never occured to me before that I could just pre mix up 25l in a drum and take it along to a trackday, then fill the 1 gallon tank from a pre mixed drum, so no need to ****** around as much on a trackday.

I think the 1 gallon is the right choice in the end, I just went a ****** long and expensive way around things to get there!

lesson learnt :(

Earlier I was miserable because of this silly WMI kit issue.

Now I'm happy because my car says Prawn on the back!

And BigAl has his own plate for it too :)

and it's about time Dad had a sloagan too

And nobody can tell me it's gay because Bill has one too :)

Because Racecar!

Bills advertising ;)

But in all fairness with the meth think you have made the right choice and i find it easier to knock up a large amount and top it up using that, as the container i use has convieniently got 2 litre markings up to 20l and i also carry a spare 6 litre container of premixed in the boot with me

When going to the ring you could always put in a large mineral water bottle or 2

Love the plates, the euro style stickering is mega ghey though, not race car at all.

What euro style stickering Jimbo? You mean the audi badging on the plate holder? I wanted a plain one, and this was the most plain one I could find!

Bills advertising ;)

I'm advertising myself :) haha.

Mainly, it's so people know who's driving on track, people often thought they were having 'close laps' with Me when it was infact Dad at the wheel.

my water injection tank is 10ltr capacity... and never used more than 1/2 of it during a race... Duration is'nt 45mins long tho, my fuel tank would'nt laast that long! lol

By "close laps" you mean they were trying to get close to me.!!!

Thanks a lot for my own number plate. Its great. A bit of fun for a great sport and pass time.

He has been called King Prawn before, but if I put 'king Prawn' on the back of a car that everyone knows as 'prawns car' then it would just look like I'm being ultra arrogant!

King Prawn - Latin name>>> Dendrobranchiata

haha, this thread makes me laugh :p

Where else on the internet can you find one of the UK's top tuners posting random pictures and videos of Prawns? all based on a silly nickname :p

I needed to go shopping this evening and the focus has no fuel, so I HAD to take the track car.....

...what a shame! haha.

It's genuinely handly for shopping though, if you pick the right box in lidl it can hold your shopping in nice and snug:

I've even strapped my Cider in in the past, but in this case, it was rush hour , so I couldn't shape it up too much!

I knew those seats were a good idea but I think it was a waste of money buying the 6 points if you are not going to use them.

On a serious note; on searching the net re methanol, it appears three different grades are available.
Racing 99.9, Virgin 99.9 and recovered. One site said that virgin 99.9 was not suitable for racing, so I am assuming that recovered is also not suitable. Is this just "marketing" and sales talk or is there an important difference. Does anyone have any experience with the three choices in question.

Afaik you deffinately don't want recovered

Virgin and racing is what I understand that is needed not sure of the difference though may just be a marketing technique? :)

Of course when they say virgin 99.9 cant be used for racing , they probably mean cant be used for racing if using only methanol. Not as in WMI. Just thought of that.

Folks, I need a favour!

As you know, Comrades of Vag, run by our very own (and dear) Aaron, are running a competition for one lucky member to win a Professional photoshoot by DrivebyShooters. Sadly though, all the other entries appear to have been taken by photographers already, and my lowly entry is taken on my Iphone!

So, if you're bored of seeing the same old thing time and time again, ultra low cars on scene wheels, and fancy seeing some professional shots of something a little more original, then help a prawn in need and do me one small favour!

If you could click one the image, then click like and give me a chance of finally getting some decent pictures of the beast, I'd be eternally grateful!

Whilst you're there, you can take a look at some of the wicked shows that COV have coming up, and join the group too if you havn't already :)

Much love

Prawny

"much love, prawny". How low can a man get to achieve what he wants.

Out of interest is it a REVO or R-Tec map you running? Good progress by the way:icon_thumright:

Thanks been looking on SSS they seem like good guys. Also how easy is the Toyosport FMIC to fit? Bear in mind Ive still got the SMICs fitted? Hows the engine build going?

If you go down the Wellycooler route it's really fairly easy fitting, nothing hugely custom required. Just tools and patience!

Dad picked up the wets today, along with 50L of meth :)

Went for a drive earlier, and turned down a road I wouldn't usually go down, more C road than B road, and on the rough dirty Tamarac down there, it was utterly useless! Haha. semi slicks on a damp gritted road don't work with ~300bhp and fwd!

Still epic fun, but I think I'd be faster in my company focus :racer:

Massive progress today!

Orange vacuum hose instead of black, and a quick fix coil pack wiring heat shield using some wovan heater hose shield I had spare. Will make something proper when I have the time :)

Heat shield is looking good mate! How is the manifold holding up so far and when is the next track day?

Manifold is holding up well so far MD, gave it some serious abuse this evening and all is good :)

Driving a focus tdi during the week is really making me appreciate this car even more, every time I drive it it just feels so great!

Next booked trackday is Goodwood on August 11th, but I intend to do a few before then, work depending.

Great work Prawn, a lot of time and efort has gone into this.
I drive an LCR and yesterday i removed my k04 manifold to fit the XS manifold V2. How do you get the xs manifold in position as i can't get it to clear the bulkhead due to its larger dimensions, i'll try sliding it in positon from the side latter but i left the turbo in position:shrug: so that will have to go plus i'm looking forward to hacksawing studs in position too. All in all i'd rather have my teeth pulled but the gains will be worth it i think. The more i think about it, i feel the head will be coming off. Your patients are saluted.

Sorry for the late reply dude

To get the XS manifold on you have to remove the turbo and downpipe, otherwise there is simply no room to get it in, or do up any of the bolts. I'm sure you've figured that out by now though!

I found, to get it in with the head on, I turned it so the flange faced upwards, and slid it down behind the engine that way, then lowered it until the flange was below the head studs, and rotated it back upwards so it's in the right orientation, then lifted it back and up onto the studs.

Not easy, but it will go.

If you've not already done it, don't try hacksawing the studs in place, it'll be a nightmare, you'll get swarf down the ports which you don't want going through the turbo, and it'll be difficult to repair the thread. Just whip them out! 2 manifold nuts wound onto the stud, lock them together with two spanners, then wind out the inner nut and it'll pull the stud. Trim them down, then refitting is the reverse of removal (in true haynes style!)

Don't pull the head off, I really don't think it's worth the effort when a bit of patience gets it on without disturbing the head.

A tip for spanner access to the hidden 3rd turbo nut too: Remove the top downpipe stud from the exhaust housing. taking the top downpipe stud gives you a much better angle of attack for getting a spanner in to tighten the final nut. Worked a treat for me on both occasions :)

WMI kit arrived yesterday, now with correct sized tank! Going to size it up Thursday night and work out what's needed, then try and fit it on Friday. Going to mount the bottle further forward in the car to try and avoid cocking up the weight distribution. I've got an idea for a method to hang the bottle off the main hoop of the cage, but until I've got it in my hands I won't know exactly how it'll pan out.

New IC pipe with WMI boss should arrive from Bill at some point this week as well, so fingers crossed I'll be testing the WMI on Friday night!
