Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

im unsure of where everyone else places their nozzle, but wouldnt that be a tad low on yours? you'l find meth and water lining the pipes more wont you?

It's in pretty much the same position as Tufty and Westy have theirs, only mines the other way round due to the A3 inlet on the other side :)

There's an argument that suggests that it needs to be a decent distance from the TB to give it a chance to atomise

A3s are backwards David....... a bit like yourself

hang on there silver fox! If you think back to when your hair wasn't silver, the A3 came before the S3, so it's the S3 that is backwards!

Took the car for it's first decent drive last night, to Ace cafe for VAG night.

Got home at half 6, quick change of clothes, and down to the carwash to let the nice foreign chaps wash the car for me:

That's better!

Cruised up there nice and slow to get a steady heat cycle through the manifold.

Ate the standard Chilli chips and cheese whilst the car cooled down, was good to see everyone again, although a fairly poor ASN turn out this month compared to previous months.

Then bombed home down the M3 with AP and Jardo in the volvo, of course, Andy has to stop for fuel because the volvo drinks so much trying to keep up with me ;)

got a bit more 'heat' into the manifold on the way home :racer:, all feels good. No leaks or nasty noises, and pulling very strongly indeed :)

happy days

I like to change it up a bit :p

Might have picked up some more tyres recently too :)

Anyone guess what they are?

We are starting a wheel and tyre museum in Blazingcoke soon. Admission prices will be posted shortly.

I didn't think anyone would be Sad enough to right click and check the image properties. haha.

BigAl: Seeing as you're the one who insists on buying all these tyres that currently fill every spare inch of my available living space, are you offering to pay for a garage in which to store them all?

Wish my old man contributed to my rubber ;)

Looks nice Bill :)

I'm really hoping these re-welded manifolds will stand the test, although if I'm honest I'm still not 100% convinced, but there's only one way to find out!

Another new toy arrived today!

5 gallon tank sits perfectly where I imagined it would :)

Here's what I've got to work with for fitting the pump:

I want to be able to retain the spare wheel fitted for transporting tyres to trackdays, it'd be a shame to lose the space

I think I might struggle though!

Inside the wheel well?

or perhaps here?

Pump HAS to be gravity fed doesn't it? What kind if minimum drop is required?

Just thought of another pump location, in the rear footwell behind the pax or drivers seat. a decent 12'' drop or more, and doesn't invade into boot / tyre space.

Andy is running the same pump up front in the engine bay, above his tank output, and has no issues with the feed at all, so I reckon it should be fine in the rear footwells.

Pump needs to be close to the tank ideally... as long as its levelish with the outlet then all good...

hmmmmmmmmmmm

Now looking at possibly trying to squeeze it in behind the passengers seat for weight distribution!

Can't decide if I want it as far forwards (in the back) and low down as poss, or out in the boot to add weight back in at the back to regain a more even front:rear balance.

This is something you have to think about with the 5 gallon tank as it will be a lot heavier when full then the 1 gallon tank most go for.

5 US gallons is 19 litres, water has an SG of 1, so assuming a 50/50 water/meth mix, that's 9.5 litres of water, so 9.5kg.

Methanol has an SG of 0.791 so 9.5 litres of methanol will weigh 7.5kg.

Total weight of a full tank will therefore be 17kg. I'll probably only usually half fill it, I just don't want to have to be forever topping it up at a trackday!

17kgs is a lot when you work it out like that. You'd better hope that the benefits of wmi outweigh (no pun intended) the extra weight you'll be carrying about. Especially as your car is all about being light.

Considering there's another 50bhp on reserve from the turbo, and the same again in torque, and the fact that WMI should help hold it all together for longer, I think it'll be well worth it.

17kg of fluid is equivalent to under half a tank of fuel. Considering I tend to use two full tanks of fuel on a track day, I can't say I notice a huge change in the car from full tank to half tank. If we were at a serious level then perhaps, but 17kg if also the difference between having Dad as pax in one session, and Jardo / Andy P in the next session.

Basically, what I'm saying is, if it's going to help it be more reliable and more consistent power, I think 17kg is well worth the hit.

Will lose aircon and CD changer / sub to compensate :p

Who is this OLD MAN you and Stacey keep on referring too.

I believe 'old' is merely a disrespectful term of acknowledgement for someone with your impressively high level of life experience Big Bad Dad. I wouldn't worry about it at all ;)

Oh no. How will I amuse myself on the way to the Ring. (no replies please)

I'm not worried. (I think). My body is 50/60/70, take your pick, but I'm 28. And that the truth:blahblah1:

I have used hi-nickle rod on this which is supposed to be good for dissimilar metals, and crack resistant... What I use on cast to ferrous/stainless welding on hotsides... Nothings fallen off yet - lol

I personally think you have made a mystake in sizing such a big tank.
far far better to carry a smaller one and refill as required between sessions..

you are carrying a combustable fluid in your passenger compartment remember, in significant qty.
any baffles in that huge tank?
if low, what stops is sloshing about when you corner/brake etc vs the pickup pipe

1gal would be plenty imho for track use.. and you refill between sessions.
my 2p

Don't say that Bill, you makes I sad :(

There is a big baffle at one end in front of the pick up to stop it from running dry.

It had never occured to me that I was adding a flammable liquid inside the car, this is a worth while point.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I'm confused now :(

10% mix wont ignite. 50% will
burns with colourless flame

i've not tried what % which does not ignite as yet

thinking safety dude..

good re baffle tho.. but it will be sloshing about a lot with your driving :D
