I have a couple of mates who have turned there TBs 90 degrees to aid airflow, ive heard it mentioned a time or two, any body had any good results with this?....;)
 
Turned as in 90 degrees so the throttle flap pivots vertically rather than horizontally?

Seen this done on SEMs and larger (75mm +) TB's but normally this is purely to allow them physically fit rather than for performance... not sure what differnce it would make on a blown engine... its still the same level of obstruction which ever way round it goes...

I can't see how it would make any difference.
Its all still the same size and in the sameish location.
Just the angle it moves has changed.

Be interested to know if it does make any difference.
 
Yes that right paul, its supposed to feed 3+4 cyl better... if you think of the angle the air is coming in at it may make some sense...?

Does make sense but then a decent plenum would fix that and cyl 4 will always suffer in some way without a decent inlet like the SEM or similar...

Worth a punt I guess, timing pull may end up being less at a guess as 4 always suffers from the heat...

Do it, log it and report :)

Thats an inline engine... inlet is different to our transverse ones...

This is why the plenum capacity should be typically 1.5 times the engine capacity for turbo engines...

Yeah thats my engine lol. Wonder if it`d be easy still on a cable throttle..

are we thinking that cylinder 4 gets more air than cylinder 1 because of the stock TB/plenum design and cylinder 1 is slightly starved of air because its on the far side of the inlet manifold?
 
ah ok, so the air is rushing/bypassing past cylinder 4? Cylinder 4 is on the flywheel end of the engine right? closest to the TB
 
Cyl 4 suffers from heat as its where the coolant is hottest before circulating back through the radiator....

Depends on the application... big turbo, large inlet (SEM or similar) etc then arguably yeah... power level also a factor.. I run 380ish hp on a std 60mm tb and Welly over 400hp on the same... but of course just because you can doesn't make it right :)

High overall airflow and high boost then I am sure it will make a difference... just not seen much on my setup to argue it either way... will be testing this again when I have sorted my mapping out and ready to go for the larger inlet manifold etc...

hmm i see your point i was thinking SEM with R32 tb... for my future build :p and what has welly done differently to you ? stroked it or something :p

His turbo is a bit bigger than mine.... larger turbine....

I've done this modification and not noticed any gains on the road, I can't see it giving any major gains on the dyno but i'm sure you will see the results if it was tested on a superflow flow bench.
